INTRODUCTION
These OPERATING AND SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS are a guide for using and maintaining espresso coffee pod machines type CIAO.
This device is intended for use in domestic environments and similar such: kitchen, shop, office and other workplaces, farmhouse, hotel, motel, and other residencial, bed and breakfast.
The machine CIAO can be equipped pulse-counter to stop coffee machine after a pre-set number of coffee;
The espresso coffee machine CIAO employ roasted, ground, pressed coffee portioned and packed in single-dose pods in protective atmosphere.
The system is practical and easy to use and guarantees the following advantages:
- a quality espresso coffee;
- a thick cream;
- no contact between the machine and the brewed espresso;
- a machine that is easy to keep clean;
- less machine maintenance.

GENERAL RULES ON THE MACHINE USAGE
Please read carefully this instruction booklet and the guarantee limits.
The machine has to be kept clean washing frequently the cup holder rack and the drip tray.

never immerse the machine in water or put it inside the dishwasher.
RECEIVING AND UNPACKING
The pod coffee machine mod. CIAO is packed in a carton box with inside an upper and lower shaped section. Open the box and remove the protective sheets in order to take hold of the bottom of the machine. Rest the machine on a flat surface for the preliminary operations and to check the machine's integrity.
For any doubts, please call any of Spinel service centres.
Forwarders will be held responsible for any breakage or failure related to transport.
POSITIONING AND INSTALLATION
All machine installations and settings must be carried out by authorized technical staff only.
Spinel S.r.l. is not liable for damages to the machine due to improper installation of the same, incompetence or negligence of the personnel responsible.
Make sure that power voltage and frequency match with the machines data shown on the machine plate.
The equipotential protection circuit must be checked at least once a year.
It is necessary to install a proper overcurrent protection device on top of the power supply cord.
The following automatic protection switches are recommended:

After checking that the machine is complete, place it on a stable and perfectly horizontal surface in order to allow enough space for carrying out all operations easily and safely (Insertion water bottle, fitting the pod, cleaning and maintenance).
SWITCHES AND THEIR FUNCTIONS
Coffee groups general switch (ON/OFF) (A): When the switch is moved to ON, this switches on the coffee group. If the Coffee Group Light (C) is off, the coffee group is ready for delivery; if it is on, the temperature is not optimum and it is preferable to wait a few seconds until the light switches off before the next delivery.
Coffee brewing switch (B): Pressing it will deliver the coffee; pressing it again will stop the delivery.
Stand-by light (D): The machine has been designed to respect the environment and reduce energy consumption when not in use. After 15 minutes of inactivity the machine will automatically shut off and the standby light flashes. To restore normal operation of the machine turn the ON / OFF switch (A) and turn it back on after 3 seconds.
MACHINE OPERATION AND USE
- Fill the PET water bottle and insert this in the case bottle holder, taking care to inserting the pipes back into the bottle without obstructions or folding.
- Insert the plug into the power supply socket.
- Make sure that the coffee groups general switch (ON/OFF) (A) is set on the ON position.
- Remove the pod from its protective packaging by tearing the edge.
- Fit a pod inside the bottom pod holder, making sure that it is well centered.
- Push the closing lever (E) downwards until it stops in order to tighten the coffee brewing group.
- Place the cup on the cup holder rack (G).
- Press the coffee brewing switch (B). When the required amount of coffee has been delivered, press the coffee brewing switch (B) again to stop delivery.
- Once the coffee has been delivered, move the closure lever (E) up (initial position) and remove the used coffee pod.

In the machine stop position, the lever needs to be moved upwards.
To prepare more than a coffee, repeat the sequence from the beginning.
OPERATING FAULTS
The machine may not work because:
- the plug hasn't been inserted into the socket;
- the switch ON/OFF haven't been pressed;
- no water in the bottle;
- filters are blocked.
The cause of failure in preparation of the drink can be:
- the pod holder is not properly closed;
- an exhausted pod is being used (pod is single-dose);
If the cause of the failure does not correspond to those listed above, it is necessary to contact one of our service centers.
GENERAL SERVICING
POWER CABLE
Regularly check the power cable. If it is worn or damaged, it should be replaced by authorized personnel.
CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE
For a proper usage of the machine and a high standard quality coffee, it is highly recommended to regularly clean the machine. These operations have to be done when the machine is cold and unplugged to the power supply.
DRIP TRAY CLEANING:
Empty the tray daily and wash with warm water.
EXTERNAL CASE and CUP RACK
They should be cleaned using a cloth soaked into specific neutral detergent and warm water.
DECALCIFICATION
The limestone formation is a natural consequence of the use of the machine. We recommend executing periodically (the appearance of limestone within the water draft pipe) decalcification the machine in order to avoid malfunctions that are not covered by the warranty. Only use products for descaling coffee machines and follow the instructions on the package of the same product. Do not use vinegar, lye, salt, formic acid because they may damage the machine.

Spinel S.r.l. does not acknowledge any failure due to a lack of routine maintenance of water softener according to procedures hereby described.
POD HOLDER ADJUSTMENT
SPINEL S.r.l. carries out a correct adjustment of the upper and lower pod holders during quality tests.
In case of leaking during coffee delivery from the junction part of the two pod holders, it will be necessary to adjust it manually by proceeding as follows:
ATTENTION: do the registration and replacement pod holder only and exclusively the machine is cold.
Take the pod holders in open position, move the coffee spout, slightly release the nut positioned on the lower pod holder plate, behind the spout.
Insert the Allen key (size No. 5) into the hole underneath the lower pod holder plate.
- by turning to the left, the tightening strength is increased;
- by turning to the right, the tightening strength is reduced.
Once having carried out the adjustment procedures, tighten the locking nut of the lower pod holder and re-position the coffee spout.
If the leak is not repaired through the pod holder adjustment, inspect the upper gasket and replace it, if necessary. However, these operations should be carried out by authorized personnel, using original SPINEL s.r.l. spare parts.

Replace components only with ORIGINAL SPINEL S.r.l. SPARE PARTS, available in all Spinel service centers. SPINEL S.r.l. accepts no liability for failures of machines type JESSICA if spare parts supplied by others are employed. All repairs should be carried out only in our service centers and/or by authorized qualified staff only.
NOTICES
In order to have a high quality espresso you have to:
- warm the cups before usage (over the cup warmer or with hot water);
- maintain the machine conditions by dripping some water at the beginning and at the end of the usage;
- turn on the machine at least 20 minutes before usage;
- replace water in the bottle every day.

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICES
Please read the instructions carefully.
When using electrical appliances should always observe the following safety measures:
- The appliance can be used by children over 8 years and by people with reduced physical, mental or sensory experience and/or insufficient skills, if supervised by a person responsible for their safety or they are instructed in the use of the device and they are understand the danger associated to the use of the machine. Keep children under supervision, to ensure that they do not play with the appliance. The cleaning and maintenance can't be done by children without adult supervision.
- This machine is designed to "make espresso coffee": Be careful not to burn with the misuse thereof.
- Do not store the machine in environments where the temperature is below 5°C
- Do not use the appliance for purposes other than those specified. The manufacturer cannot be held responsible for any damage caused by improper, erroneous or unreasonable.
- After unpacking, check that the appliance is in perfect conditions. In case of doubt, do not use it and contact a qualified technician.
- The power supply must be equipped with grounding: the manufacturer cannot be held responsible for any accidents caused by the lack or noncompliance with the laws of the grounding system.
- To avoid damage to people or to device, do not place the power cable in hazardous areas.
- To keep the machine working perfectly it is essential to use exclusively parts provided by the manufacturer Spinel s.r.l.
- Periodically check the power cable. A worn cable is a serious electrical hazard, if necessary, it has to be replaced by authorized personnel only.
- The plug for connection to the power supply cannot be replaced.
- The machine must be installed:
- in places where the room temperature is between + 5°C to + 50°C with relative humidity not exceeding 80% absolute;
- in a place where its use and its maintenance can be carried out only by trained personnel;
- on a flat surface, in ventilated areas, away from water taps, and sinks.
- Never install/use the machine:
- outside;
- on electric or gas rings, or inside a hot oven;
- if the power cable or plug are damaged, if the machine shows signs of operating incorrectly or if it has suffered any damage;
- in areas where jets of water may be used.
- Never touch a hot surface.
- In case of failure or malfunction, switch the machine off and do not tamper with it. For any possible repair, call only a Service Centre authorized by the manufacturer. Failure to do so may compromise the security of the device.
- To protect against fire, electric shock or injury do not immerse cable, plug or appliance in water or other liquid.
- Disconnect the plug from the power supply in case of:
- non-use of the machine;
- cleaning of the machine;
- filling the tank with water.
- Never put hands, metal objects or other inside the machine when it is connected to the power supply.
- The user should never access those parts of the machine whose protections are blocked by means that require a tool to be released.
- Before cleaning, let the machine cool down, in order not to affect the outer parts of the machine, we recommend the use of neutral or for food detergents.
- The unit must never be washed with water jets.
- Never immerse the machine in water or put it in the dishwasher.
- The use of attachments not recommended by the manufacturer may cause fire, electric shock or injury to persons
- In case of incompatibility between the socket and the appliance plug, have to replace the socket with another suitable type by qualified personnel.
