6E-16 4.3L TURBO (VIN Z) DRIVEABILITY AND EMISSIONS
ABBREVIATIONS AND GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Abbreviations used in this manual are listed below
in alphabetical order with an explanation of the
abbreviation. There are some variations in the use of
periods and in capitalization (as mph, m.p.h., Mph, and
MPH) for abbreviations used in this section but all
types are acceptable.
A/F - AIR/FUEL (A/F RATIO)
for combustion of fuel. Ideal ratio is 14.7 parts of air to 1
part of fuel.
ALDL - ASSEMBLY LINE DIAGNOSTIC LINK -
assembly to evaluate Computer Command Control and
for service to flash the "Check Engine" light if there
are trouble codes. Also used by "Scan" tools to obtain
ECM serial data.
- An electrical signal that varies in
ANALOG SIGNAL
voltage within a given parameter.
+ - Battery Positive Terminal (12 Volts)
Bat
- ECM memory that adjusts the air/fuel

ratio on a semipermanent basis.
CAC - CHARGE AIR COOLER
charger using coolant.
- An electrical device used to store a
CAPACITOR
temporary charge.
- A device used with fuel injection to allow
CAL-PAK
fuel delivery in the event of a PROM or ECM
malfunction.
CALIBRATOR - (PROM)
which can be specifically programmed to meet engine
operating requirements for each vehicle model. It
plugs into the Engine Control Module (ECM).
CCC - COMPUTER COMMAND CONTROL -
electronic control module to control air/fuel and
emission systems.
CCP - CONTROLLED CANISTER PURGE -
controlled solenoid valve that permits manifold
vacuum to purge the evaporative emissions from the
charcoal canister.

CID - CUBIC INCH DISPLACEMENT
engine size.
C/LOOP - CLOSED LOOP
information to the ECM to maintain an optimum
air/fuel ratio (14.7:1), output.
COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR (CTS)
senses the engine coolant temperature, and passes
that information to the electronic control module.

CO - CARBON MONOXIDE
found in engine exhaust.
CURRENT OR AMPERAGE
is similar to gallons of water per minute flowing in a
water pipe.
DIAGNOSTIC CODE
flashing "Check Engine" light, or displaying on a
"Scan" tool. This code can be used to determine the
system malfunction.
DIAGNOSTIC TERMINAL
ALDL connector will flash or display a code. When
grounded with the engine running will enter the
"Field Service Mode."
DIGITAL SIGNAL
"ON" or "OFF" with no in between.
- An electrical device that restricts current flow
DIODE
in one direction.
- An electrical device, usually a power
DRIVER
transistor, that operates like a switch; that is, it turns
something "ON" or "OFF."
DVM (10 Meg.)
ohms resistance - used for measurement in electronic
systems.
ECM - ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL MODULE -
metal case (located in passenger compartment)
containing electronic circuitry which electrically
controls and monitors air/fuel and emission systems on
Computer Command Control, and turns "ON" the
"Check Engine" light when a malfunction occurs in the
system.
EFI - ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION
ECM
Command Control using throttle body fuel injection.
EGR - EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION
reducing NOx emission levels.
EECS - EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS CONTROL SYSTEM -
Used to prevent gasoline vapors in the fuel tank from
entering the atmosphere.
EMI OR NOISE
another needed signal; like an electrical razor upsets a
television picture, or driving under high voltage power
lines upsets the AM radio in a vehicle.
ENERGIZE/DE-ENERGIZE
through a coil (energized) such as a solenoid, a plunger
is pulled or pushed. When the voltage to the solenoid
is turned "OFF" (de-energized), a spring raises or
lowers the plunger.
