1. General Information “Dosimetry” means measuring radiation dose levels specifically in the context of human health effects. Powering on/off: Start by inserting two fresh AA batteries according to indicated orientation. Press power button to turn on. To power down, a long press of the power button is needed – the display indicates when long enough. If battery voltage is too low, the device will beep three times and automatically power down.

4. Display Modes Mode 1: The top line shows text BATT:OK to indicate that the battery status is OK. If the battery approaches the lower limit of life then the top line will show BATT:LOW. When this happens varies widely depending on battery type, but 1-2 hours before automatic shutoff is typical.

5. Understanding Display Numbers Counts per minute (CPM) gives the raw rate of detected interactions in the scintillator. Incoming X-ray/gamma photons can have higher or lower energies, but the CPM value only counts interactions. Radiation dose is a unit related to the health effect on the human body of radiation.

Dose and dose rate are connected by time. Dose rate is how quickly a person is accumulating dose while dose is the total amount received. For example, being exposed to 3 µSv/hr for 10 hours would result in a dose of 30 µSv. Sievert (Sv) or rem are generally the basic units of radiation dose.

All people are exposed to background radiation from natural and unnatural sources. The amount can vary widely but 2,000-3,000 µSv per year is common. At the time of writing this document, in the US the annual whole-body limit allowed for workers exposed to radiation is 50,000 µSv.

For comparison, a typical medical chest X-ray might expose a person to 100 µSv while a medical CT (computerized tomography) scan might expose a person to around 10,000 µSv. Acute radiation syndrome (ARS) or “radiation sickness” can result if an extremely large radiation dose is received in a short amount of time.
