They were the perfect docks shunter, being rugged and simple. Their short wheelbase could navigate the tight curves and poor track but their relatively large boilers created plenty of steam to shunt large trains. The first batch proved so successful that a further 10 locomotives were ordered in 1891 followed by another 3 in 1897.

Initially concentrated in North East locations such as Darlington and Gateshead works, Alexandra Docks and Tyne Dock, the Y7s spread themselves far and wide, from St Margaret’s shed and Leith docks in Scotland to Tweedmouth and York and even as far south as Stratford and Neasden. This net was cast even further during wartime: some were loaned to the Ministry of Works at Shrawardine near Shrewsbury, 1 to the Admiralty...
UNBOXING YOUR MODEL Remove the sleeve from the clear plastic clamshell, then open the clamshell. Remove the model from the clamshell by gripping it at the centre of the side tanks. RUNNING IN Every model needs a running in period. Your locomotive has been tested at the factory to ensure proper operation...
FITTING THE ACCESSORIES We have included a bag of extra components to help detail your Y7 locomotive. Please ensure that you run your engine in thoroughly before customising or weathering it, just in case there are any teething troubles that need fixing.
COUPLINGS In order to fit the scale chain couplings, you must first remove the tension lock couplings - these should slide out of their dovetail slots. The top chain link has two holes, these go either side of the coupling hook and are held in place by the pin.
SERVICING YOUR MODEL Like any machine, your model will benefit from the odd drop of oil from time to time. It will have been lubricated in the factory and this should be sufficient to last for ages. However, there are times when a drop of oil will come in handy, such as if you use your locomotive extensively every day or if this is the year 3000 (when we live underwater) and...
DC/SILENT OPERATION Your locomotive is fitted with a modern 21st- Century motor and electronic components. They are much more sensitive to voltage spikes than models from previous decades. Your model should work perfectly well using modern analogue controllers (and by that we mean something that’s newer than 30 years old).
Our sound-fitted models use ESU LokSound5 decoders but any mainstream manufacturer’s decoders are likely to be suitable. If you’re in doubt, it’s best to speak to a DCC specialist before you invest in a decoder. If you want to fit sound into your Y7, it already comes with a factory-fitted speaker so all you need to do is source the sound decoder.

Step 3. Remove the front coupler and cylinder cover. Step 4. Use a plastic prying tool or screwdriver to pop the tab underneath running board, allowing the smokebox to lift up.

Step 5. Lift out the PCB, remove the blanking plug, and push fit the Next18 decoder of your choice. Step 6. Replace the PCB back into its slot and carefully fold the wires around it to allow the body to be placed back on the model.
DCC FUNCTIONS If you’ve bought a sound-fitted version, it comes from the factory with a decoder address of 3. We suggest if you are using DCC control that you first test that the locomotive responds on address 3. Once you have verified that it’s responding, you should assign it a unique address before proceeding.
SOUND VOLUME SETTINGS The sound volume settings have been designed to be ‘layout-friendly’. To change the volume level, go into the program mode on your DCC system (refer to your system’s manual for instructions on how to do this as each system is slightly different);...
LIMITED LIFETIME WARRANTY We will do our best to solve any problems or issues that you may have with your model. If your locomotive has any defects that originate from the factory, we will repair your locomotive using new components or replace it outright should a repair not be possible.
