ABOUT PLUG-IN HYBRID VEHICLES ABOUT PLUG-IN HYBRID VEHICLES Operational Characteristics The Clarity Plug-In Hybrid uses a combination of an electric motor and a gasoline engine as propulsion sources. The electric motor receives electricity from an internal high voltage battery and an internal generator. The vehicle can be plugged in to charge the high voltage battery or the battery can be recharged (to a degree) during vehicle use.

SAFETY Airbags Your vehicle is equipped with four types of airbags: front airbags, side airbags, side curtain airbags, and a driver’s knee airbag. Front Airbags (SRS) The front SRS airbags inflate in a moderate-to-severe frontal collision to help protect the head and chest of the driver and/or front passenger. They are housed in the center of the steering wheel for the driver and in the dashboard for the front passenger.
Page 21
SAFETY For the advanced airbags to work properly: • Do not spill any liquid on or under the seats. • Do not put any object under the passenger’s seat. • Make sure any objects are positioned properly on the floor. Improperly positioned objects can interfere with the advanced airbag sensors.
Page 22
SAFETY Side Curtain Airbags Side curtain airbags help protect the head and torso of the driver and passengers in the outer seating positions during a moderate-to-severe side impact. The side curtain airbags equipped in this vehicle are also designed to help reduce the likelihood of partial and complete ejection of vehicle occupants through side windows in crashes, particularly rollover crashes.

When the vehicle has been in a moderate-to-severe collision Even if the airbags did not inflate, have your authorized Honda Clarity Plug- In Hybrid dealer inspect the following: the driver’s seat position sensor, weight sensors in the passenger’s seat, front seat belt tensioners, and each seat belt that was worn during the crash.
SAFETY Child Safety Each year, many children are injured or killed in vehicle crashes because they are either unrestrained or not properly restrained. In fact, vehicle collisions are the number-one cause of death of children ages 12 and under. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Transport Canada recommend that all children ages 12 and under be properly restrained in a rear seat.
Page 28
SAFETY WARNING Allowing a child to play with a seat belt or wrap one around their neck can result in serious injury or death. Instruct children not to play with any seat belt and make sure any unused seat belt a child can reach is buckled, fully retracted, and locked. We strongly recommend placing a forward- facing child seat in a rear seating position.
Page 30

HANDLING THE UNEXPECTED Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) - Required Federal Explanation Each tire, including the spare (if provided), should be checked monthly when cold and inflated to the inflation pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label. (If your vehicle has tires of a different size than the size indicated on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label, you should determine the proper tire inflation pressure for those tires.)
HANDLING THE UNEXPECTED Tire Repair Kit If a tire goes flat while driving, grasp the steering wheel firmly, and brake gradually to reduce speed. Stop in a safe place. If a tire has a small puncture, you can use the tire repair kit to temporarily repair it. The puncture must be smaller than 3/16-inch (4 mm) and not in the tire sidewall.

MAINTENANCE DOT Tire Quality Grading The tires on your vehicle meet all U.S. Federal Safety Requirements. All tires are also graded for treadwear, traction, and temperature performance according to Department of Transportation (DOT) standards. The following explains these gradings. Uniform Tire Quality Grading Quality grades can be found where applicable on the tire sidewall between tread shoulder and maximum section width.
MAINTENANCE Temperature The temperature grades are A (the highest), B, and C, representing the tire’s resistance to the generation of heat and its ability to dissipate heat when tested under controlled conditions on a specified indoor laboratory test wheel. Sustained high temperature can cause the material of the tire to degenerate and reduce tire life, and excessive temperature can lead to sudden tire failure.
MAINTENANCE Testing of Readiness Codes Your vehicle has readiness codes as part of the onboard self-diagnostic system. Some states use these codes for testing to verify whether your vehicle’s emissions components are working properly. The codes may not be read if you go through the testing just after the battery has gone dead or been disconnected.
