LONG RANGE WIRELESS ULTRASONIC TANK LEVEL SENSOR
Models: SU10, SU11, SU12
Manual
Thank you for purchasing a Navis wireless ultrasonic sensor. Read the instructions carefully and save them for future
reference. The instructions for the receiving unit are not part of these instructions, they are included with the receiving unit.
1. INTRODUCTION
The SU10...12 wireless sensors are designed to measure the level of various liquids in tanks of different shapes and made out
of different materials. They consist of a ultrasonic sensor and a transmitter which is connected to the sensor with a short
cable. Separate transmitter allows use on underground tanks.
The sensor is mounted on top of the tank so that it has line of sight to the surface of the liquid. The transmitter is installed
nearby, in such location to allow maximum wireless range. The batteries are installed in the transmitter.
The sensor can work with several different Navis receivers and level displays: LW3/D, LW5/D, LW410/D, LW110-4-20/REC
2. OPERATION
An ultrasonic sensor measures the distance to liquid surface every minute (optionally 5 seconds or 5 minutes). It sends the
measurement to the receiver / display wirelessly every five seconds. Each sensor has its own address, so the individual
sensors do not interfere with each other.
Data from a single sensor can be received simultaneously and independently by multiple receivers located within range of
the sensors signal.
The foam on the surface of the liquid prevents the reflection of ultrasound and thus normal operation. Foaming liquids are
not suitable for the ultrasonic measuring principle.
LED diode on PCB blinks every time when valid level measurement is performed.
3. SENSOR INSTALLATION
Because the sensor has very narrow ultrasonic beam angle it is important that it is mounted exactly horizontally. Tolerance is
O
O
+/- 2 to 3
. There must be no objects in the measuring beam of the sensor (approx. 7
) .
Screw the sensor into the hole at the top of the tank that has the appropriate internal thread (see models for correct thread).
If necessary, install a threaded mounting flange or other suitable mounting bracket. We recommend plastic mounting
brackets. If metal bracket is used, provide elastic mounting via soft rubber spacers. This reduces the possibility of
measurement errors due to transmission of vibrations from metallic mounting flange.
After installation, measure the distance from the sensor (its lower edge) to position where tank would be considered empty
and from sensor to the position where tank would be considered full. Take a note of these distances as they are required for
setting up the display / receiver.
4. CONNECTION AND INSTALLATION OF THE TRANSMITTER
!Warning! Do not insert the batteries until the sensor cable and antenna are correctly connected to the terminals of the
transmitter.
Route the sensor cable through the gland and connect three wires (Brown, Green, White) to the appropriate terminals.
Carefully tighten the cable gland. Screw on the antenna. Insert 3 x 1,5 V AA batteries (not supplied). Place back the cover of
the casing and tighten the screws. Install the transmitter near the probe in a location which will allow maximum range to
display / receiver. Keep the antenna in upright position. If the transmitter is installed in a place exposed to the weather, it is
recommended to protect it from weather with small roof.
