The SMEA-1PA is a microphone Interface box that is designed to be used with ETS ML1 series un-pre-amplified
microphones and Power Over Ethernet IP cameras that have an audio (line level) input.
ML1 Microphone Placement
Locate the ML1 microphone as close as possible to the area of interest in the to be monitored. If a large area is to be
monitored, locate the ML1 in the middle of the room. Do not mount the microphone near air conditioning vents, light
fixtures or electrical equipment. The ML1 should be placed as close as possible to the subject(s) to be monitored. The
ML1 is still useable at distances of up to 25 feet but is dependent on the level of background noise in the area.
Experimentation in the environment will determine what distances work best.
SMEA-1 location and power
The SMEA-1 interface box is designed to be located any place along the IP camera CAT5 cable run. It must be located in
between the IP camera and the PoE network switch as shown in figure 1.
NOTES-
1. The IP camera MUST be connected or the SMEA-1 will not power up.
2.
The SMEA-1 will not work with non-PoE IP cameras.
ML1 Cable Run
ML1s come standard from ETS with 6' cables. ML1s can be ordered from ETS with cord lengths up to 25' long. Exceeding
this distance increases the risk of noise pickup in the cable.
SMEA-1 Output
The SMEA-1PA comes standard with a 6' 3.5mm patch cord. TR are the signal and S is ground. You can order the
SMEA-1PA with an RCA output or flying lead option. You can also cut the end of the standard 3.5mm connector and strip
back the insulation to use the wires for termination on terminal blocks. The RED and BLACK wires are the signal and the
shield is ground.
Adjusting SMEA-1 Level
The level setting comes set from the factory at ½ volume. If the volume is too low or too high on your head end system,
use this control along with gain settings in software to get the best possible sound. Experimentation will determine which
settings work best.
SMEA-1PA Mode switch: The SMEA-1PA supports Both Modes A and B of IEEE802.3af POE. The SMEA-1PA is
pre-configured for the most common use of the "end point" POE IEEE802.3af standard (mode A). If the power LED does
not illuminate in this position, try the mode B position (mid span).
