    Introduction Introduction This document outlines the steps required to operate a Concealed Weapons Detection (CWD) system. The CWD system is a walk-through personnel screener designed to detect threats, including firearms and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Required Health and Safety Signage In accordance with Food and Drug Administration guidance, CWD customers must place signage notifying visitors that an electronic security system is in use.

    System Overview System Overview Setup Options The CWD system can be configured in differently depending on operational requirements. Configurations are based upon site surveys performed before system assembly and delivery. Information such as available space, projected foot traffic, lane widths, and operational parameters are collected to determine the final layout.

    Single-Lane Configurations The dual-lane setup includes four (4) tablets: two (2) flow control tablets at the end of each lane and two (2) threat resolution tablets in separate secondary search areas. Secondary search areas configured with threat resolution tablets are used to mitigate alerts diverted by flow control staff. Diverting alerts to a secondary resolution area reduces crowding when an alert occurs.
  • Page 11 Single-Lane Configurations High Visitor Flow A single lane setup for high visitor flow requires two (2) tablets: one (1) flow control tablet and one (1) alert resolution tablet. A secondary search area can be setup for alert resolution. This configuration is typical for employee entrances with an established secondary area for performing bag searches.

    Operating CWD Operating CWD Operational Footprint The following is the operational footprint for the CWD system and describes the approximate size of the scan zone, decisions zone, and recommended resolution zone.     Cameras Cameras Alarm Resolution Cameras The CWD is equipped with two (2) alarm resolution cameras in the transmit tower. These cameras capture the images used to locate the alarms. In addition to the alarm resolution cameras, optional cameras can be installed on the front and rear of the CWD transmit tower.

    Lane Width Options Lane Width Options The CWD system has two options for indoor lane widths: standard and wide. The lane width options are available for both single and dual lane systems. The CWD system can be switched back and forth between standard and wide lanes.

    Ruggedized Outdoor Model Ruggedized Outdoor Model The optional Ruggedized Outdoor Model has a large metal base for stability, 4-inch wheels for moving over smooth and rough surfaces, a handle and two pivoting wheels for better mobility, and quick leveling legs among other features. For the Ruggedized Outdoor Model, the standard lane width is 29 inches wide at the base, and the wide lane is 37 inches wide.

    Starting CWD Starting CWD Remove Metal from the Exclusion Zones Before powering on the CWD system, the exclusion zones must be cleared of all large metallic objects. The CWD has two exclusion zones around the system, which are measured from the outer surfaces of the transmit and receive towers.

    Powering On Powering On Power on a CWD system using the power switch found at the base of the transmit tower. This switch is behind the locked base cover in lane 1 to prevent unauthorized access to the system. Unlock and remove the base cover, flip the switch to the ON (I) position to power up the CWD system. Replace the lane 1 base cover and lock it before proceeding.

    Troubleshooting The status indicators transition to yellow on both sides of the towers during this phase and then briefly turn green, and then red, during the camera alignment test. NOTICE: Do not enter lanes when status indicators are yellow. The process is complete when you see the green status indicators on the guard side, and blue status indicators on the visitor side, of the CWD towers.

    System Tests System Tests After the initialization and the self-diagnostic is completed (2-3 minutes), the LED status indicators will transition to blue on the visitor side, and to green on the guard side. Now, the system is ready to be tested with the Operational Test Kit (OTK).

    Screening Visitors Screening Visitors This section outlines the normal screening process when visitors walk through a CWD system. The process takes less than 3 seconds, with individuals walking at a normal pace. Multiple people can walk through a lane simultaneously, with all patrons screened at the same time. There is no need to queue individuals before entering the lanes.

    Inside the Scan Zone Inside the Scan Zone The CWD determines the individual is in the scan zone when they break the photocell beam in front of the tower. This tells the system to begin scanning for threats in the appropriate lane. Scanning occurs in the scan zone while the individual passes through the lane.

    Potential Threat Detected Potential Threat Detected If the system detects a threat, the lane which detected the threat will flash red to indicate an alert in the lane. An audible beep will be heard from the tablet. The tablet will display an image of the individual, and the location of the potential threat.

    Alerts Resolving Suspected Threats Staff assigned to threat resolution tablets perform the required secondary search on the suspected threat. Using the threat resolution tablet and the alert mode queue. Staff resolve the threat using approved security and search procedures identified by the customer site. Once the threat has been identified by staff at the secondary search, the threat resolution staff tag the alert using the alert tagging feature on the tablet.

Once this person is identified, staff will stop and divert the possible threat to a secondary screening area. Alert Cube Alarms create an alert on the lane’s flow control tablet and consist of images of the suspected threat individual and a pinpointed location of the potential threat.

    Alert Queues Alert Queues The Flow Control tablet and the Alert Resolution tablet alert queues are very similar, but there are some differences. New alerts on the flow control tablet override the current display of the tablet to allow flow control staff members to identify the latest suspected individuals.

    Alert Tagging Alert Tagging The alert tagging feature is a critical task and tool to help staff properly identify objects that alert in the lane and provide an opportunity to tag the object. This tagging feature is useful for future screening analysis and analytics to aid in identifying common objects that alarm and for setting security protocols.

The scan sensitivity level will have an asterisk on the tablet home screen if Modified Sensitivity and Sensitivity Display are enabled.

    Request Assistance Request Assistance The request assistance feature allows tablet users to send a message to subscribed users. The request assistance icon appears in the top center of the taskbar when enabled. This feature is enabled and set up via the Portal. Pressing the megaphone icon in the top left displays the Request Assistance feature with preconfigured messages and optional free form text messages.

    Tablet Users Tablet Users There are four user types with access to the tablet and the CWD dashboard: Operator, Supervisor, Administrator, and Service. The default user is Operator. All users can view and confirm alerts. Access to Admin, Supervisor, and Service is accomplished by tapping Operator icon, selecting the user, entering the password, and then tapping the green check mark button.

    Tablet Menu version 6.0 or higher. The Supervisor account is intended to be used by people who install and configure the CWD system, but who should not have access to critical detection settings that should be controlled by security directors. NOTICE: the Supervisor account does not provide access to view or change these settings: Metallic Sensitivity, Modified Sensitivity, Home Screen Sensitivity Display, Scan Data Retention.
  • Page 35 Tablet Menu Settings Different settings appear for different user roles. The Operator role has access to three settings: Appearance, Screen Brightness, and Volume. The Admin and Supervisor roles have access to more settings. Commands When logged in as an Operator, the user will only see the commands available to them based on the Operator account privileges.

Statistics The Statistics screen shows information on the CWD system operation and configuration. Systems with software version 6.0 and higher have a maintenance schedule that reboots the system and installs any necessary software updates.     Wireless Tablet Wi-Fi Operators can view the Wi-Fi connection status in the top-banner or the tablet screen. If the tablet is connected to Wi-Fi, the Wi-Fi icon will look show full bars, as shown in the image below. Each CWD system can support up to six wireless tablets. Wireless tablets can be mounted to tablet stands or equipped with desktop stands.

Systems with software version 6.0 and higher installed have a maintenance schedule that reboots the system or installs any necessary software updates.
