GETTING STARTED
Check that the 'Heat Alert', circuit-breaker and
Mode Selector switches are in the OFF position.
Turn ON the engine' s ON/OFF switch, open the
fuel tap and set the choke – fully closed if starting
from cold, half closed if warmed up.
A few brisk pulls on the starter-cord should now
start the engine. Once started, let the engine
warm up for five to ten minutes before opening the
choke to leave it running normally.
BASIC TECHNIQUES
If WELDING...
Ensure the metal to be welded is clean, dry and free
from rust, paint, grease and the like.
If necessary, securely clamp the workpieces in their
final position to stop them moving during welding.
Refer to the table and select the welding current and
rod size appropriate to the total thickness of metal
to be welded.
Connect the the electrode lead to the '+' terminal
and the earth clamp to '–' terminal.
Clip the earth-clamp to the workpiece, choosing an
area of bright metal near the weld.
Fit a welding rod into the notch in the electrode
holder' s jaws.
Set both the Heat Alert and circuit-breaker
switches in the ON position.
Turn the Current Regulator knob to give the
required welding current and, when ready to begin,
set the Mode Selector knob to position 1.

If GENERATING ...
Plug the equipment you want powered into the
auxiliary power socket, then turn ON both the 'Heat
Alert' and circuit-breaker switches.
When you are ready to begin, set the Current
Regulator knob to give maximum output and set
the Mode Selector knob to position 2.
In normal use, either the Mode Selector knob or
circuit-breaker serves as the auxiliary power
socket' s ON/OFF switch.
Never push the equipment beyond its design
limits. If it will not do what you want with reasonable
ease, assume you have the wrong tool for the job.
Contact your local HSS Hire Shop for advice.
Never start or stop the generator 'on load'. Always
SWITCH OFF and UNPLUG any equipment connected to it.
Handle the equipment with care. Avoid dropping it,
knocking it, or otherwise exposing it to damage.
Never expose the equipment to dangerous and/or
corrosive chemicals.
Keep the equipment clean. You will find this less of a
chore if you clean up regularly, rather than wait until the
end of the hire period.
Regularly check the welding rod and replace
before it becomes too short – remembering to let it
cool first.
Regularly check the fuel level and top up as
necessary with unleaded petrol.
Regularly check the oil level (when the engine is cold)
and top up as necessary.
When not in use, store the equipment somewhere
clean, dry and safe from thieves.
Set the 'Heat Alert', circuit-breaker and Mode
Selector switches to OFF .
Disconnect the welding leads and any equipment
plugged into the auxiliary power socket.
Close the engine' s fuel tap, set its ON/OFF switch
in the OFF position and wait for the engine to die.
Finally, clean the equipment with a damp cloth
(never use cleaning agents) ready for return to your local
HSS Hire Shop.
