Connect the earth clamp and electrode holder
cables to their screw on terminals: the earth clamp
to the one marked '–' and the electrode holder to the
one marked '+'.
Clip the earth clamp onto the work piece, choosing
an area of clean, bright metal close to the proposed weld
to ensure a good electrical connection.
Now, insert a welding rod into the notch in the
electrode holder's jaws. Squeeze the lever to open
them; release to close.
Move the current selector knob to give the
required welding current, reading this off the gauge
on the top of the unit.
You can now switch the welder ON. Make sure the
pointer lines up with the correct supply voltage.
BASIC TECHNIQUES
This guide is designed to help the user to safely set
up and dismantle the welder. It is not intended as
a guide to welding techniques as it is assumed
that
the
user
already
has
training/knowledge and experience.
Before striking an arc, ensure your vision is
protected by the welding mask lens.
Holding the welding rod at about 3mm (1/8in), simply
move the rod slowly along the weld in a series of
semi-circular sweeps, across the line of the joint.
Chip off the any slag build up on the weld before
making a second pass.
Recommended equipment settings are no more
than guides. In practice, changing them slightly may
give better results. For example, you might need a
slightly different welding current. So, always check the
setting by making a test weld.
Never push the equipment beyond its design
limits. If it will not do what you want with reasonable
ease, assume you have the wrong tool for the job. Ask at
your local HSS Hire Shop for advice.
Welding
Keep the equipment clean. You will find this less of a

chore if you clean up regularly rather than wait until the
end of the hire.
2.00mm (14swg)
When not in use, store the equipment somewhere
clean, dry and safe from thieves.
2.50mm (12swg)
Replace the welding rod before it becomes too
short – remember to let it cool, first.
3.25mm (10swg)
Switch the welder OFF , and either unplug it from
4.00mm (8swg)
its power supply or have a qualified electrician
disconnect it from its mains supply.
Remove the earth clamp from the work and take
the rod out of the electrode holder.
Disconnect the electrode holder and earth clamp
leads from their terminals, and coil them neatly,
ready for return to your local HSS Hire Shop.
