Breaking
in
New engine
The engine needs to be run-in during the first
1,000 miles (1,500 km).
For the first 600 miles (1 ,000 kilometer s):
"' Do not use full throttle .
"' Do not drive at engine speeds that are more
than 2/3 of the maximum permitted RPM.
From 600 to 1,000 miles (1 ,000 to 1 ,500
kilometers):
"' Speeds can
gradually
be increased to the maxi-
mum permissible road or engine speed.
During and after break-in period
"' Do not rev the engine up to high speeds when it
is cold. This applies whether the transmission is
in N (Neutral) or in gear .
After the break-in period
"' Do not exceed maximum engine speed under
any circumstances.
"'U pshift into the next higher gear
before
reach-
ing the red area at the end of the tachometer
scale
c=>page 10 .
During the first few hours of driving, the engine's
internal friction is higher than later when all the
moving parts have been broken in. How well this
break-in process is done depends to a considera-
ble exte nt on the way the veh icle is driven during
t he first 1,000 miles (1,500 kilometers).
(D
Note
Extremely high eng ine speeds are aut oma t i-
cally reduced. However, t hese rpm limits are
programme d for an engine well run-i n, not a
new engine.
@)
For the sake of the environment
Do not dr ive with unnecessarily high engine
speeds - upshift ing early saves f uel, reduces
noise and prot ects the environme nt .

and the envir o nment
New tires
If your vehicle is runn ing on new tires, drive very
carefu lly fo r t he firs t 35 0 miles (500 kilometers)
aft er fit t ing.
WARNING
New tires tend to be slippe ry and must also
be "bro ken-in". Be sure to remembe r th is dur-
ing the fi rst 350 m iles (500 kilometers).
Brake gent ly. Avoid following closely behind
other vehicles or other situations t hat might
require sudden, hard braking.
Catalytic
converter
Applies to vehicles: wit h gasoli ne e ngi ne
It is very important that your emission control
system (catalytic converter) is functioning prop-
erly to ensure that your vehicle is running in an
environmen tally sound manner.
"' Always use lead-free gasoli ne
c>
page 212,
Gasoline .
"' Never run t he t ank down all the way t o empty.
"'N ever put t oo much mo t or oil in your eng ine
c=> page 224, Adding engine oil
'l:::r..
"' Never try to push- or tow-start your veh icle.
The cat alyt ic converter is an efficie nt "cle an-up"
device built into the exhaust syst em of the vehi-
cle. The catalyt ic converte r burns many of the
poll utants in the exhaust gas before they are re-
leased into the atmosphere.
The exclusive use of unleaded f uel is critic ally im-
por t ant fo r the life of the catalytic converte r and
prope r f unct ion ing of the engine.
A
WARNING
=
The temperat ure of the exhaust system is
high, both when driv ing and after stopping
the engine.
-
- Never touch the exhaust tail pipes once they
have become hot. This could result in burns.
- Do not park or operate the vehicle in areas
where the hot exhaust system may come in
contact w ith dry grass, brush, fuel spill or
other mate rial wh ich can cause a fire.
