How to Use

Controls

Your HappyLight® Alba comes with touch controls, making your light therapy experience easy and fun!

On/Off

On/Off
The main power button is located on the top of Alba. The light must be turned on before you can change specific settings. When you turn off your light, your selections are automatically saved for the next time you use your light. How cool is that?

There are three controls that allow you to change your settings and customize your HappyLight® experience:

HappyHue Color Selector

HappyHue™ Color Selector

Use the left control (oriented as if you are looking at the back of the light) to choose between 3 different hues of white light. Each time you touch the control, it will change color.1

1 Color temperature options are warm white (3,500K), neutral white (4,150K), and daylight (5,000K)

Brightness

Brightness
Touch the right control (oriented as if you are looking at the back of the light) to choose between 4 different brightness levels to find the one most comfortable for you.2
If the brightest setting is uncomfortable, you can start with a lower setting and work your way up to the full 10,000 lux over multiple sessions. Increasing the brightness when in use will allow you to get your daily dose of healthy, bright light more quickly (which means shorter light therapy sessions!). However, if a lower setting is more comfortable for you, that's OK! Just increase your time with the light and you will still get the same benefits!

2 Brightness level options are 2,500 lux, 5,000 lux, 7,500 lux, and 10,000 lux.

Countdown Timer

Countdown Timer

The countdown timer helps you keep track of the length of your light therapy experience (which makes it pretty convenient). You can set the timer while you do other things (like reading a book, checking email or just enjoying a cup of coffee or tea), and your light will turn off on its own once your light therapy session is complete.

One Hour Quick Set

To set the timer for a one-hour session, quickly touch the timer control. The illuminated lights will pulse once, indicating that a one-hour session has been set.

Customizing the Length of Your Session

You can customize the length of your light therapy session in 10 minute increments.

  1. Step 1 - Touch and hold your finger on the timer control located on the base of the light for 2 seconds. The illuminated increment lights will pulse twice indicating that programming mode has begun.
  2. Step 2 - Continue to hold your finger on the control and select the length of your light therapy session. The amount of time is indicated for each light.
  3. Step 3 - Remove your finger when the desired time has been illuminated. The illuminated lights will pulse three times to recognize the chosen session time and indicate that the programming mode has been completed.

warningNote: If you touch the control again before the completion of the three pulses, you will be able to continue to modify the session time.

Stopping the Timer

Touch and hold the timer control until the illuminated lights turn off. If you would also like to turn off the light, press the on/off button at the top of the lamp to turn the power off completely.

Positioning

Positioning
Sit close to your HappyLight® Alba with your eyes open. While staying oriented toward the light, feel free to engage in other activities that you would normally do. These can include reading, working at your computer or desk, using your phone or tablet, applying make-up, or even hobbies and crafts! Really, there is no limit to what you can do - get your dose of bright light for the day and do your normal routine (multi-tasking #winning)!

You can place HappyLight® Alba between 6 and 24 inches of your face. The time of use and distance are correlated - so the closer you are, the less time you need in your light therapy session and vice versa when it is placed further away (so, more time when it is further from you!). It is most effective when positioned slightly off-center (check out the diagram).

Do not look directly into the lamp.

Customization

Since the light does need to be oriented towards your face (but not staring into it directly), your eyes need to be open to get the full benefit.

warning Note: Tinted glasses reduce the amount of light reaching your eyes and would result in the need for a longer session.

We are all different and each person's response to light will vary. It's important to find the distance, time, and color that are most comfortable for you. How close you place HappyLight® Alba to you affects the length of time using the light. The closer you are, the higher the brightness and the less time you will need to use HappyLight® Alba each day to experience the benefits!

If you do not experience desired results, or are feeling lethargic, here are a few things you can try:

  • Try using a higher brightness level
  • Sit closer to the lamp
  • Increase the amount of time you are using the lamp

If you experience edginess or feel over-stimulated, try some of these options:

  • Use a lower brightness level
  • Sit farther from the lamp
  • Decrease the amount of time you are using the lamp
  • Take a break from using the lamp

Don't forget that you have a few amazing options to customize your experience! Alba's HappyHue™ Color Selector lets you adjust the temperature of your light, and the countdown timer helps you easily set your desired session time!
Try keeping a journal of how you feel when using HappyLight® Alba to find the settings that work best for you!

Device Pretest

To help determine your degree of sensitivity to light, we recommend that you perform this pretest upon the first use of your HappyLight® Alba Therapy Lamp.

  1. Step 1 - Turn on the lamp and position it about 18 inches from your face (remember, don't look directly into the lamp).
  2. Step 2 - Operate the lamp for approximately 10 minutes and turn it off (you can use the countdown timer to set it for 10 minutes to make things easier!). If the light has caused any discomfort, stop using the lamp and consult a doctor. If you have no discomfort, you may consider gradually increasing the brightness of the light, decreasing the distance from the lamp, and/or increasing your usage time. When you first start using the lamp, you should monitor the degree of any discomfort and accordingly adjust the brightness, HappyHue, distance, and time. Keeping a journal or log of how you feel when using HappyLight® Alba during the first few weeks will help you find the settings, distance, and time that work best for you!

Certain medications (e.g. antidepressants) and diagnosed mental health conditions may induce light sensitivity, which may result in discomfort, hyperactivity, or hypomania. Consult with your healthcare provider before using this product.

If you have a pre-existing eye condition or are at risk for developing Age Related Macular Degeneration or other eye conditions, consult with your healthcare provider before using this product.

Establishing a Daily Routine

Establishing your daily routine with HappyLight® Alba will help you to maximize the benefits of light therapy. Clinical research on bright light therapy consistently demonstrates that 2,500 - 10,000 lux (a measurement of the intensity or "brightness" of light) between 20 minutes and a few hours per day help with mood and sleep issues and can reverse the symptoms of "winter blues". Consistent use at the same time each day has been shown to have the biggest impact and timing earlier in the day has also been shown to be more helpful for sleep cycles.

Establishing a Daily Routine
Every person has a different sensitivity to light, so it is important to find the settings, distance, and time that are most comfortable for you. After you have completed the Device Pretest, use your HappyLight ® regularly around the same time each day. You could choose to do this all in one session, or divide your time into several mini-sessions. Use your HappyLight ® Alba daily to improve in sleep, boost your mood, increase energy, and enhance your focus.

As you are establishing your routine, if you find yourself feeling sluggish and lethargic, increase the brightness of the lamp, sit closer, and/or spend more time in your session. If you feel a sort of edginess, like you drank too much coffee, it may be time to turn off the lamp.

*Recommended time is a function of brightness and distance. Individual results may vary. Please also refer to the warnings at the bottom of the Device Pretest section.
