Our Roland KR-4500 Digital Intelligent Piano started smoking and it smelled like something was burning. We immediately unplugged it. First, does it have any “vacuum tubes” internally and Second, I can’t figure out how to disassemble it to see if I can identify the problem. Can you perhaps point me in the right direction or at least suggest where I should start looking?

The Roland KR-4500 Digital Intelligent Piano does not contain vacuum tubes internally. It uses digital components such as program ROMs (control and sound source) and integrated circuits (e.g., IC45 and IC21).

For disassembly and inspection:

1. Ensure no floppy disk is in the floppy disk slot.
2. Power off the unit.
3. For internal cleaning or inspection:
- Remove specific components like capacitors (e.g., chemical capacitor 47/50) from the component side.
- Use jumper wires to connect certain IC pins (e.g., pin 8 of IC43 to pin 62 of IC50), securing them with hot melt or bond.
- After cleaning, return contact rubber to its original position and lower the switch holder.

Careful handling of electronic components is required during disassembly.
