Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Perhaps the most important test in the TBL is the switch test. Especially stuck switches have shown to have unexpected side-effects and need to be dealt with prior to any other actions.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Menu function Push the Enter button to open the Main menu. In the Main menu, you have submenus which will lead you to subsections with a variety of possibilities: • Test menu. You can carry out any test you desire to check if something is working properly.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Test report PLEASE DO NOTE THAT THIS MENU WILL ONLY BE VISIBLE IF THERE ARE ISSUES TO REPORT. In this menu you can see if the TBL has noticed any issues. This is checked when TBL boots and when opening the Menu.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Switch test If you activate this test, it will display all switches which are active at that moment. If you have doubts about a certain switch, you can check the correct working here. Push the switch, or even better, roll a ball over it, and see if this switch pops up on the display here.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Which switches are expected to be Active with NO game started? Most likely it is : And depending on the exact position of the Bowling launcher it can also be this If you see any other switches Active this is most likely a stuck switch and needs to be fixed prior to further diagnosis.

Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Principal of Operations The way the bowling alley-pins work is as follows. The software calculates the position of the bowling launcher by detecting the left, right and middle position via switches. It also knows the speed of the launcher so it can determine where the launcher is at the moment you push the launch button.
Page 44
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 • Now we need to raise the playfield to vertical position. Lift if up at the servicebars, pull it towards you till you hear two clicks (this means the locking mechanism is in place and the playfield can’t drop in the cabinet).
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Is the launcher properly mechanical fixed? So, if the pins don’t go up it’s because 1) software is never perfect but mainly because 2) the software thinks the launcher is in a different position as it is in real life.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Do the switches of the launcher work? Go into the test menu and activate switch test. Move the launcher slowly by hand left-right-left You should see the following: • Position launcher left is left switch •...
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Do the opto and ball launcher switch work? To check this, go into the Testmenu and select Bowling Opto test Testing of the Bowling Alley Opto test This tests if the switches in the Bowling alley are working properly. It will show if there is a “Ball at Top”...
Page 48
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Testing of the Bowling Alley Stepper motor The TBL has three stepper motors: • In the Bowling alley below the playfield, which moves the ball launcher left and right. • On the MPF, you will find a moving door behind which the car is placed. This Car Door is moved by a stepper motor.
Page 49
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 If you select it, you will get the following In this mode, the Bowling Alley launcher will move only once. Pushing + will open it, pushing – will close it. Also, the status of the involved switches is clearly shown. If it is activated it’s highlighted. Also, the square box at the left and right side indicates if a switch is activated (in which case it will be filled) However, if you push Enter it will go to the looping mode.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Possible cause of zero pins dropping? As explained the opto doesn’t decide which pins have to drop, it just times the coils to pull up the pins which need to fall. So, if the opto doesn’t trigger this means the pins will not be pulled up and the software will not show on the display pins are hit and fallen.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Bowling pin coil check If you see a bowling pin is not dropping it can also be caused because the coil of that pin is faulty. This can be checked in the Testmenu – Solenoids.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Stuck releasepin If the bowling ball is not released of a launched ball is immediately drained this can be because the coil is not firing but if you hear it firing check if the release pin is not rubbing against the wood. Can also be that if its rubbing it only slowly returns back in position and a new ball already has passed it.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Bowling-pin not being fully pulled up If the Bowling pin isn’t fully being pulled up make sure this joint shown below is loose enough, eg wiggle it a little. Or loosen the screw a little Page 53 bowling operations faq rel 0.94...
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Accuracy off? The software calculates the position of the bowling launcher by detecting the left, right and middle position via switches. It also knows the speed of the launcher so it can determine where the launcher is at the moment you push the launch button.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Miscellaneous checks The bowling alley has on one side a ‘wiring’-hub. Check if all connectors are properly seated. The bowlingpins 1-10 are connected from right to left, see below picture. Page 55...
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Bowling Alley replacing pins - Adding limiters guide Caution If you are not comfortable working on pinball hardware and/or high voltage electronics, please get professional support for this. In general: use your common sense. Don’t experiment. Don’t be a nihilist. Only skilled and trained people are allowed to open this system.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Before doing this make sure the game is TURNED OFF! In this guide its described 1) how to replace broken bowling pins but also 2) how to prevent this from happening again in the future. This latter is done with a ‘limiter’. These limiters are installed in the factory TBL serialnumber 700 and higher.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 • Take out a complete row • Next step depends on what you want to do. Just replace broken bowling pins and/or add limiters? Adding Limiters In case this isn’t done yet it’s advised to add what I call a limiter. This limiter will shorten the bowling pin travel and prevent it touching the metal axis of the row behind them.
Page 61
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 However, we discovered that, due to several changes in part supplier of the Bowling Pins which causes minor design and printing fluctuations that with a height of the rubber ring of 5 mm it can be that the metal rod is still hit.
Page 62
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 • So, we have taken a row out. In below example it’s the first row which has 1 bowling pin • The bowling pin assy has enough play to remove the plunger from the coil without needing to remove the coil or metal axis.
Page 63
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Example plastic ring • The last row of 4 pins has in theory no use for a limiter as there is no metal rod behind this row to hit. We do advise however to do the last row also. And, if you want all pins to have the same travel upwards you will need to do the last row to.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Replacing broken Bowling pins • Push the axis from one side. You will need some force as its hold with a ‘ring’. Take also good note if the bowling pin is held to the coil from the left or right side (the last row is different as the first 3 rows) •...
Page 65
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 The ring has 4 ‘teeth’ pointing inwards and upwards. The easiest way to slide it over the axis is have the ‘teeth’ pointing upwards to the end of axis • As mentioned, the last row has the bowling pin on the opposite site of rows 1-2-3. See below picture.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Wrap-up • Re-assemble in the opposite order of the de-assembling. The pins must be assembled in the following order: The bowlingpins 1-10 are connected from right to left, see below picture.
Page 67
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 If you select PINS you can select which pin you want to check. Pin 1 is the one front middle. All coils can be activated by pushing the Enter button. You will hear and/or see the coil being activated.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Freezes Hangups switches not responsive P3-ROC not found issues Caution If you are not comfortable working on pinball hardware and/or high voltage electronics, please get professional support for this. In general: use your common sense. Don’t experiment. Don’t be a nihilist. Only skilled and trained people are allowed to open this system.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Several users have reported issues like freezing, crash to Ubuntu, switches stop reacting, etc.. In this document I have gathered some knowledge and advise how to approach these issues and how to do some fault finding and remedies.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Stuck switches First of all its good to know that firmware release 055 introduced a switch test checking for any un- used switches or stuck switches. This check is performed upon booting the TBL and upon opening the Menu.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Check position USB connections to audioboard and P3-ROC On the top of the PC you will see that there are 2 rows of USB connections. The left row is USB3.0 and right row is USB2.0. Although USB3 should be backwards compatible with USB2 it has been proven that connecting the Audioboard and P3-ROC board to the USB2 inputs is more reliable.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Reseat USB connections to PC and P3-ROC Reseat the USB connectors to the P3-ROC (under the main playfield) and in the PC. In case you are not familiar how to get under the playfield to the P3-ROC, this is explained further down in this manual.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Replace the USB cable running from PC to P3-ROC This is a standard cable like 9 feet - 3 meter long from USB-A to USB-B. A cable like used for connecting printers to a PC. Very common available at any computer store. Please do use a quality...
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 The 5VDC powerfeed to the P3-ROC The P3-ROC board is on a piggy-back connected to the Main Mother Board (MMB) below the main playfield. Suppose the connector pins of the P3-ROC don’t have a 200% contact with the female header on the MMB it can be because of vibrations (caused by playing) the 5VDC is, briefly, lost causing an USB failure between the P3-ROC and PC.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Preparation • Carefully remove the lockdown bar and playfield glass. • Pull the playfield up with the bottom arch (or apron). • Remove all five balls from the Ball Trough! •...
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 5V Power P3-ROC Fix There are two options described: 1. Creating extra 5 VDC power wires to the PROC 2. Reflowing solder powerpins PROC First, identify the P3-ROC board on the MMB: Page 76 hang-ups freeze P3-ROC lost issues faq rel 0.60...
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 WARNING: BEFORE DOING THIS, PLEASE MAKE SURE TO TURN OFF THE GAME! Extra 5VDC powerwires to PROC Adding extra 5 VDC wires is mainly reccomended for TBL’s having the original version of the PCB (REV0). You can see the revision of your mainboard below the playfield.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Reflow the powerpins of the PROC There have been occassions were the 5 VDC powerpins of the PROC itself were not properly soldered. This can be resolved via reflowing the solder at these Powerpins while also adding some solder.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Reseat the RAM memory on the PC-board WARNING: BEFORE DOING THIS, PLEASE MAKE SURE TO TURN OFF THE GAME! There has been a case reported where reseating the RAM memory on the PC solved this kind of issues.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Rug Toy FAQ Caution If you are not comfortable working on pinball hardware and/or high voltage electronics, please get professional support for this. In general: use your common sense. Don’t experiment. Don’t be a nihilist. Only skilled and trained people are allowed to open this system.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Principle of operation The rug toy is a fairly simple mechanism to understand. In below picture you get an overview of the complete Rugtoy assembly. Page 81 RUG Toy faq rel 0.9421...
Page 82
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 It consists of a stepper motor with a spindle. When this spindle rotates it will move the rug up or down. It has 2 switches to determine the working area of the steppers motor, a RUG FRONT switch (Rug EOS Front;...
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Rugtoy makes noise when moving into third position This is usually caused by the fact that the subway is a little bent outward and the rug is running against which makes the steppermotor make this noise. Check if the rugtoy doesn’t the subway at...
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Rugtoy makes noise when moving into fourth and final position This is usually caused by the fact that the RUG BACK EOS switch is not detected (or to late detected) and the stepper motor keeps running pushing the Rug against the back wall. Check if the BACK switch (SW35) is working properly.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Shots to the rugtoy are not registered The rug has a single switch which detects the shots against the rugtoy. The rug moves up and down and the range is dependable on the position of the FRONT and BACK switches.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 The Rugtoy doesn’t run smoothly or make squeeky sound This can be caused by a misalignment of the spindle. The spindle should be able to run freely. If it is not under mechanical pressure can be checked by rotating the spindle manually.
Page 87
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 The spindle should run freely without having to use force. Page 87 RUG Toy faq rel 0.9421...
Page 88
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 The stepper motor is fixed with 4 screws. If you loosen these 4 screws you can move the stepper motor vertical to get it better aligned. Changing the vertical position of the motor also changes the height of the roller on top.
Page 89
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 If all of the above doesn’t help it can also be that you need to play a little with the horizontal width. Loosen the screws encircled in below picture and push the brackets outwards, re-tighten and test. If pushing the brackets outwards doesn’t help, try pushing them inwards...
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Test the Rugtoy Testing of the Rug Stepper motor & switches The TBL has three stepper motors: • In the Bowling alley below the playfield, which moves the ball launcher left and right.
Page 91
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 If you select it, you will get the following In this mode, the Rug will move only once. Pushing + will open it, pushing – will close it. Also, the status of the involved switches is clearly shown. If it is activated it’s highlighted. Also, the square box at the left and right side indicates if a switch is activated (in which case it will be filled) However, if you push Enter it will go to the looping mode.
Page 92
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 If you see strange behavior in this test (like the rug stops in back position at the switch position and instead of reversing direction immediately it moves first more backwards prior to reversing direction) check if the connector of the steppermotor is properly crimped.

Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 LED spot for rug not working If this LED spot is not working or intermittent take out the LED and bent the 2 wires outwards and put LED back again. This usually fixes this issue. If not, replace the LED. Do note its a 12VDC LED.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Change sensitivity Rughit switch If your rug is not sensitive enough (or to sensitive) this can be adjusted. I found it more easy just to bent the blade a little. You can also loosen the screws but as the screws are hard to get to (minor) blade bending is more easy.
Page 97
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 I used a long nosed tweezer to do this. Remember, just a little bending is usually required. When this is done you can put back the steppermotor connector to the header. This header has one pin left over and this free pin should be between the 2 connectors.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Rug Switch Fix - Adjustment Due to pressure on the Rug Hit Switch during transport sometimes hits to the Rug don’t register any more, or only when you hit it really hard.
Page 99
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Carefully move the Rug Hit Bracket about 10mm below and use a pencil, or other object which is around 10mm (3/8”) wide to put between the two brackets: 5. This will free up the switch and you are able to see the blade of the switch, also notice the (M2.5) screws:...
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Is it mounted too tight? • If the switch isn’t working (properly) it is possible that it is mounted too tight due to a manufacturing error. Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the screws just a little bit. Use small pliers, or wrench 5 to hold the nut on the back.
Page 101
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Like this the blade is perfectly aligned! You can now fasten the screws. Please note: Don’t tighten it too hard. Of course you have make sure the switch is mounted firmly, but don’t overtighten the screw;...
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 General overview The MPF (also called upper playfield) offers several functionalities • Has a mini loopramp to get Let’s Go Bowling Lit • A scoop which leads the ball to the main playfield •...
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 switch will open. This is seen as a hit. Than cardoor is positioned again against a target, rinse and repeat. It doesn’t matter if it is left or right target which is closed.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 The Cardoor operation already showed the switches envolved in this. Most issues with a malfunctioning MPF are towards the Cardoor and focus here are the parking targets. Cardoor stutters in open position When the cardoor opens and it starts stuttering against the parking targets it means the switches of the parking target(s) are not closing properly.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Cardoor stutters in closed position At the start of every new ball the TBL checks if the cardoor is closed. In case the cardoor home switch is not working properly you will see the cardoor stuttering for a dew seconds in closed position.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 MPF Overview in TBL/Switches-leds don’t work As pictures say more than 1.000 words some pictures of the MPF installed in the TBL which can be convenient for reference purposes with your MPF. These pictures don’t show the backboard installed.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Upper flipper doesn’t work Of course, this can be a malfunction of the flipper itself but 1. The flipper only works if a ball is on the MPF 2. There are 3 Carmodes. One of them is Impound Car. In this Carmode once you have bashed the Car the upper flipper will stop working till next time the ball enters the MPF.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Ball comes down Walter ramp after Jesus ramp was shot If you shoot Jesusramp the ball will end on a VUK which brings the ball to the MPF. It should go than to the mini flipper on the MPF.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Ball has difficulty to get up to the MPF It can be that you need to adjust the strength of the coil but more likely the position of the VUK against the ball is misaligned.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Upper flipper is weak and difficult to make loopshots DP discovered that an error has been made with wiring the flippercoil of the MPF with several TBLs, especially those made 2019 and earlier. This causes the Hold and Power part of the coil to be switched causing a weak flipper.

Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 There are some TBL's with a working bill acceptor. Easiest would be to have an acceptor that runs on 5 or 12 VDC (12VDC is the easiest), because you could take that from the game itself.
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Where to get power for my coin acceptor Used in TBL for supplying the 5 and 12 VDC power is, at the moment of writing this application note, the Coolermaster model G550M. Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 You can also inspect the FMB for proof of this as some damage is expected of the BA hitting the FMB. Look for damage like this. Also check the line of components which you see there for damage.
Page 272
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 It can also happen that the right flipper sometimes doesn’t work because the autofire coil rubs against the flipper pcb preventing the flipperbutton to properly activate (eg move between the opto’s). If this is your issue, your problem should disappear when the playfield is on his servicerails (like with the FMB issue).
Dutch Pinball – Technical Support TBL FAQ rev 0.78 Sometimes ‘sticky’ flipper Would advise here to try the following: • Make sure the flipper has vertical some tolerance to move. Especially if a sticky flipper is experienced after some flipping it can be because the flipper has vertically to little play, it heats up a little and becomes jammed.
