Installing KINMAN
Included in this package should be 2 Panhead screws and 2 tube springs for each pickup,

WARNINGS:

> After reading these instructions you may prefer to engage the services of a competent guitar technician.
> Do not tap the magnets with anything big made of steel as this can alter their precisely adjusted strengths. Magnet degaussing can also occur if left too close to
high energy A~C magnetic fields such as amps, speakers, transformers, electric motors, lighting ballasts etc.
> Magnets corrupt Data so keep well away from computer discs, smart cards, audio/video tapes or any other magnetic data-recording devices.
INSTALLER: Please give this page to and ask our customer to read sections 2 and 10.
These products are Lead Free and should not be contaminated with Lead Solder. However Lead solder may be used on the tips of the cables to
connect to existing wiring.
1) First check that the radius of these pickups (marked on the end of the
box) matches the radius of your fretboard. This is important to achieve
balanced string-to-string output levels.
different radiuses; 7"-14" (staggered) and 14"-18" (flat-staggered).
2) Remove the strings, remove the pickguard and note the connections of
the wires attaching it to the body. Then de-solder them at the pickguard
end.
3) For maximum quietness, the wiring cavities should be
effectively shielded with a shielding medium such as copper
foil, but some modern guitars are already shielded with
conductive paint. DO NOT TAMPER with these types of tags
fixed to wood as the shielding will be permanently damaged.
The shielding must be linked to ground by a wire to the casing of the
volume pot. You may however, be satisfied with the noise levels without
shielding because; when you contact the strings your body becomes a
shield, BUT when you don't, some noise might happen. See
www.kinman.com >Technical >Perfect Guitar >Shielding.
4) With the pick guard face down and all controls left in situ, note the
various connections then de-solder (preferably don't cut) the wires that
connect the pickups you want to replace.
The next section displays a wiring diagram. It is not necessary to mimic
the wiring layout displayed in the accompanying wirogram unless you
choose the *optional* wiring. Different original layouts of wiring likely
achieve the same thing. You can simply exchange the pickups by
disconnecting the existing pickup connections and then re-establishing the
same connections for the new pickups. However it is desirable to provide a
ground link between ALL pot casings.
5)
Carefully mount your new KINMAN Hx pickups taking care to
get them the right way around The pickus are engraved as Neck and
Bridge. The tallest magnet goes under the D-4
Baseplate should be the right way up when the guitar is stood on it's rear
strap button. Do not cross the threads of the screws in the base-plate
holes, or damage the delicate coils. Adjust the mounting screws so the
pickup is held firmly by the Red tube springs. The screws are deliberately
tight and may squeak when turned. If your old pickups were sprung on
natural rubber tube, you may want to use our Silicone Rubber tube instead
since they allow easier adjusting of the height screw. Also our's do not
perish with age.
Soldering tip. Use a 40 to 60watt soldering tool with a chisel tip, not a
pointed tip. The solder points are not pre-soldered so you can use Lead or
Lead Free solder. Excessive heat or prolonged contact will lead to dry
joints and melt the insulation of the wires, but not enough heat means the
solder won't melt and flow. Hold the chisel tip against the solder point and if
required flow the solder onto that point, then place the wire fast into the
puddle of solder and withdraw the iron. Hold the wire in place while the
solder cools. Ensure it retains a wet/glossy look after cooling. Redo as
necessary. Refer to *Soldering Tips* on this webpage
6) Referring to the wirogram over the page, solder the red end of the
pickup wire to the correct switch terminal.

7) Solder only the tip of the cable shield ground point to the back of the
volume control; Again, refer to soldering tips on the webpage.
8) Arrange the pickup wires neatly to coincide with the routed channel in
the body
9) Replace the wires leading to the output socket with the shielded cable
provided. Ensure the red wire goes to the hot terminal of the socket and
the middle lug of the volume pot. Double check this before re-assembly.
Wrong connections will cause terrible noise when you touch the strings.
10) Connect the remaining ground wires from the body & bridge and
replace the pickguard taking care not to cross the screw threads in the
body wood. Only lightly tighten the pickguard screws. Tune the strings
and adjust your new pickups as follows.
11) IMPORTANT: Pickup adjustment is crucial for tone. For maximum
output adjust the neck pickup so that both outside magnets have no less
than a 2mm (5/64") gap between the poles and the strings with the 12th
fret closed. For the bridge pickup there can be similarly a 1.5mm (1/16")
gap. This is dependent on the set-up of the guitar being OK so check that
first. Some players prefer a large gap and set the pickups slightly above
the pickguard for low output. Hx pickups are more sensitive to this
adjustment and consequently more flexible in tonal range. Experiment!
Try different settings to see what you prefer. Start low and adjust up until
you find your sweet spot. It may take a week or so to finalize your
adjustment but the results will be very gratifying. For complete info refer
www.kinman.com
>Technical >Adjust & Set-up.
12) If you mix a Kinman pickup with other pickups, the both-on-together
sound might be out-of-phase and sound not very pleasing. Reversing the
Red and White wires in the 3 Conductor Hook-Up will correct the phase.
13) Removing COVERS: With extreme care: Remove and insert the
mounting screws into the rear of the baseplate until the tips just poke out
the other side. Grip the screws between fingers on one hand and grip the
cover between the fingers of the other, then carefully wriggle the cover off
taking care not to skew it. Refer to
guides >Changing covers for photos and complete instructions.
