Applications

The meter SM-1 serves for universal sound level measurement (e.g. to determine the noise level of a room). It is designed for one-hand operation and easy to use. The sound level is measured accord ing to the sound perceived by the human ear (A weighting).

This unit corresponds to all required directives of the EU and is therefore marked with .

  • The unit is suitable for indoor use only. Protect it against humidity and heat (admissible ambient temperature range 0 – 40°C).
  • For cleaning only use a dry, soft cloth; never use water or chemicals.
  • No guarantee claims for the unit and no liability for any resulting personal damage or material damage will be accepted if the unit is used for other purposes than originally intended, if it is not correctly operated, or not repaired in an expert way.


If the unit is to be put out of operation definitively, take it to a local recycling plant for a disposal which is not harmful to the environment.

Dead batteries or defective rechargeable batter - ies do not belong in the household rubbish; always take them to a special waste disposal (e. g. collection container at your retailer).

Inserting the Battery

For power supply, a 9V battery is required.

  1. Open the cover of the battery compartment on the rear side: Press down the cover in the area marked with an arrow while simultaneously removing the cover in a downward direction.
  2. Place the battery contacts on the battery and insert the battery into the compartment.
  3. Close the cover.

If the meter is not used for a longer period, the battery should be removed to prevent damage to the meter due to battery leakage.

Operation

Hold the meter in your hand or mount it onto a stand with 6.3mm/1/4" thread via the threaded jack on its rear side.

Overivew

  1. For measuring, direct the meter with the microphone [position (1) in fig. 1 with the windshield placed] horizontally to the sound source.
  2. To switch it on, press the button (3). The display (5) will indicate the sound level in dB scurrently measured (8). Via the sensor (4), the display background illumination is automatically adjusted to the lighting conditions: if the ambient light is low, the illumination will be switched on; in case of sufficient light it will be switched off again. If nothing is displayed, no battery is inserted or the battery inserted is completely discharged. If a battery symbol (9) is shown at the bottom on the left of the display, the battery is almost discharged and should be replaced → Inserting the Battery.
  3. To indicate and hold the maximum level meas ured, press the button MAX MIN (2) [insertion MAX (6)]. To indicate and hold the minimum level measured, press the button once again [insertion MIN (7)]. The button now allows to switch between the minimum and maximum values.
    To deactivate the function, keep the button pressed for a longer time until the correspond ing insertion will disappear.
  4. After operation, switch off the meter with the button . If the meter is not switched off manually, it will be switched off automatically after approx. 15 minutes.
