The heat sink and microprocessor might be very hot. Before you open the computer cover, turn off the
computer and wait several minutes until the computer is cool.
For access, remove these parts in order, if any:
• "Computer cover" on page 55
• "Optical drive" on page 56
• "Front bezel" on page 58
• "Drive bay assembly" on page 59
• "M.2 solid-state drive and heat sink" on page 62
• "Wi-Fi card" on page 66
• "Memory module" on page 67
• "PCI-Express card" on page 69
• "PCI-Express connector cable" on page 69
• "Front IO bracket and power button" on page 76
• "Card reader and card reader bracket" on page 77
• "Heat sink and fan assembly" on page 78
• "Microprocessor" on page 81
Removal steps
Notes:
• For computers with 125-watt CPU, ensure that a new VRM heat sink is installed when you replace the
system board. If the new system board does not come with a VRM heat sink, see "VRM heatsink (for
selected models of M90s Gen 3)" on page 83 to install one first. (VRM heatsink is not applicable for the
computers with 65-watt CPU.)
• The failing system board must be returned with a microprocessor socket cover to protect the pins during
shipping and handling.
