What is Skype?
Skype is a free program that lets people
talk to each other over the Internet. You
can talk with any other Skype user for
free, or use the optional SkypeOut service
to call traditional landline or mobile
phones. For more information visit
www.skype.com.
Can I use Polycom Communicator with
SkypeOut and SkypeIn?
Yes, it can be used with any voice
communications over Skype.
How does the voice quality of Polycom
Communicator and Skype compare to a
regular landline phone?
Skype operates at a wider frequency
range ("wideband") when compared to
regular phone lines. Polycom
Communicator takes advantage of the
entire frequency range provided by Skype,
resulting in much clearer conversations
than regular phones can provide.
How does Polycom Communicator
enhance the audio quality of my Skype
calls?
In addition to providing high-fidelity
wideband audio quality, Polycom
Communicator includes Acoustic Clarity
Technology to reduce echoes and
feedback and provide full-duplex
performance. Polycom Communicator
maximizes your Skype experience.
However, it cannot help with issues such
as dropped calls, jitter, latency, packet
drop, poor hardware on the other end of
the call, or any audio issues inherent in
Skype and outside the control of Polycom
Communicator.
Can I connect Polycom Communicator to
a device that does not have a USB port?
No, Polycom Communicator must connect
through a USB port for the audio
connection and power.
Do both ends of the Skype call need a
Polycom Communicator for it to work?
No, having a Polycom Communicator on
both ends is not required. However, the
quality of a Skype call may be limited by
the hardware being used by the caller on
the other end.
Can I plug my existing headset into the
Polycom Communicator for private calls?
The headphone port on the Polycom
Communicator uses a standard 3.5mm
port. If the headphone/headset uses a
3.5mm jack, it can be used for the audio
portion of the Skype call by plugging into
the headphone port. In this scenario,
only the incoming audio would use the
headset, while the microphones on the
Polycom Communicator would still be
used.
Is Polycom Communicator software
upgradeable?
Yes, both the firmware in the device and
the software drivers on the computer can
be updated.
Why use this product instead of regular
computer microphones and speakers for
hands-free Skype calls?
Often times, using regular speakers and
microphones on a computer during
Skype calls results in significant echoing
and feedback. Polycom Communicator
includes technology to significantly
reduce or eliminate these problems.
Why use this product instead of a
computer headset?
Polycom Communicator is a great
companion to a computer headset.
