    SM-4 page 2.3 Probe Controller Unit ROBE ONTROLLER The microprocessor driven Probe Controller Unit is mounted close to the sampling probe (1 - 10 feet). It controls the probe and probe temperature (dilution chamber temperature, calibration valve, sample filter cleaning valve and orifice cleaning valve). The Probe Controller Unit is easily connected to the sampling probe with two cables by heavy duty plug connectors and to the analyzer unit with a protected cable.

  • Page 15 SM-4 page The analyzer cabinet is made of metal and has a transparent window on the front side. It features four lifting eyes and four adjustable feet (see figure in chapter 3.1). The analyzer and the automatic calibrator are mounted as 19” modules in a swing frame in the upper part, whereas, the pressurized air conditioning and pressure regulators are mounted in the lower part.

    Der ideale Ideally the place for installation for the SM-4 must be as close as possible to the sampling point. This avoids long sample lines. The distance between sampling point and analyzer should be between 3 feet and 100 feet, in special cases up to 300 feet. An unobstructed place is of advantage for installation and service.

    SM-4 page 3.3.7 Analog 4-20 mA Signal The cables for transmission of the analog 4 – 20 mA signal must be connected to the connector strip X2 in the analyzer cabinet (maximal apparent ohmic resistance 400 ). The connection must be done according to the figure “connector strip X2” in chapter 3.2.6. The use of shielded cables is recommended.

The outgoing gas may contain mercury and other stack gas components, therefore the outgoing air has to be fed to a vent line or to ambient outside the building.

    SM-4 page • The tube for the elemental mercury calibration gas of the MC-3000 is transparent and has a black marker. It is a 4x6mm tube that has to be connected on the backside of the MC-3000 (see figure above).

Setting the System into Operation 4.1 Switching the Power on Prior to switching on the power make sure that all gas connections, sample line, power cables and signal cables are connected correctly. Check the power supply. The mains voltage must meet the values specified on the rating plate: 230 VAC, 50 - 60 Hz.

    SM-4 page 4.3.2 Zeroing During Zeroing the zero valve inside the photometer closes the sample path and opens the way to an activated carbon filter. By this mercury-free air passes the detector. The signal at the end of the zeroing step is taken to adjust the baseline of the photometer.

    SM-4 page 4.4.1 Sample Volume By changing the sample volume, the sensitivity of the instrument can be changed. The default value for all applications is a sample volume of 1.0 l. The sample volume of 1 l is collected in a time period of 90 seconds.

    SM-4 page 4.4.3 Set System Check The first page of the Set System Check/ Set Automatic Calibration section is the following screen (screen number 15). The different functions will be explained in the next two chapters. (Please check also if the right Calibration Device is selected (see chapter 4.4.4 “Set Calibration Device”).

Here you select with which calibration gas generator the System Check will be performed. Before selection make sure the device you want to choose is installed in your analyzer.

    SM-4 page 4.4.6 Set External Cleaning The external cleaning function means that the blow back mechanism can be activated externally. For example, if you want to protect the system from very high dust concentrations. On the connector strip X4 there are two contacts (see figure “Connectorstrip X4”) for the external cleaning.

    SM-4 page 4.4.8 Set Fan Temperature In this menu the Fan ON/OFF temperature inside the photometer can be changed. If the temperature is higher than the Fan ON-Temp the fan is switched on. In case the temperature in the photometer is lower than the Fan OFF-Temp the fan is switched off. It is not recommended to change the values in this menu.

    SM-4 page 4.6 Data Logger You can access the data logger menu by pressing F4 “Data Logger” in the main menu. Make sure that on the first page the Logger Mode is ON (otherwise the Data Logger will not store data).

    SM-4 page 4.6.1 Show Measurements In this mode all measuring data are displayed on the display. Every line parallel to the y-axis is one measurement. In the edge on the left side the date of the data you actual see at the moment in the display is shown.

    SM-4 page 5. Service The service menu is accessible by pressing ESC in the main menu. The service code is 321. After entering these three numbers press Ent. The following sections are covered in the service menu. The service menu shall be entered be specially trained and authorized personnel only.

    SM-4 page 5.3.3 Status of the MC-3000 In this menu you can check the status of the MC-3000. The concentration that is given here is the concentration that is used for a calibration check. In case there is a malfunction of the MC-3000 the status of the Malfunction MC would be nOK.

    SM-4 page 5.4.1 Test Analyzer Components page: Here you can switch valves manually and activate status contacts. Activation and deactivation is not like in other menus with the F-buttons but with the number buttons. If you press a number button the component is switched on until you press the button a second time for switching it off again.

    SM-4 page 5.4.4 Leakage Check The leakage check shall be done be trained personnel only. Every time work was done on the gas circuit a leakage check has to be performed afterwards. If the leakage rate is 5 mbar per minute or less the system has no leakage. In case there is a higher leakage rate contact the service.

    SM-4 page 5.5 Set Measuring Calibration In this menu you can change the actual calibration. This calibration function is used for all measurements till the next calibration is done.     SM-4 page  The MC-3000 is dedicated for generation of mercury concentrations in air. Do obey the related dangers while working with mercury vapour! Make sure that the emitted gas is guided into an appropriate absorption device and that gas leading parts are not leaking.

    For inside cleaning purposes the system has to be switched off completly. In this case only dry cleaning is allowed. Never use water jets or steam jets for the SM-4! 7.2. Spare Parts/ Wear Parts The active spare parts list will be available at your local service partner.

    SM-4 page 7.2.2. Tubing inside the photometer All parts that are in contact with sample gas are made of special materials. All these materials show very low interactions with mercury. In the following figure you can see all tubing inside the photometer.

    SM-4 page 7.6 Cleaning of the Sample Tube The sample tube is the connection of the UFO-filter in the probe to the UFO-filter in the analyzer cabinet. The sample tube has red markers. For works on the sample tube the measurement has to be interrupted. The power supply for the heated bundle has to be interrupted before and during the cleaning procedure (for example switch off the analyzer cabinet).
