DMD
Operation
Refer to figures 4 & 5. The colored bursts of light shine on the mirrored surfaces of the
DMD device. The DMD surface consists of over a million tiny mirrors. Each mirror
th
measures less than 1/5
the width of a human hair and can either tilt +12 degrees
toward the lens to produce a light on the screen or tilt –12 degrees in the other direction
(off), directing the light into oblivion (dark area). A piezo-electric driven device tilts each
mirror when voltage is applied. Since the mirror can tilt in any one of the two directions,
the system is digital (on or off).
Brightness
Brightness levels between full on and full off are created by turning the mirror on a
number of times in a given period. The more times it is on, the brighter that pixel seems
to appear. The human eye averages the brightness levels.
Color Blends
Figure 6 shows how different colors are created in this system. The 3 mirrors shown
represent one DMD micro mirror of the device. At the single pixel on the screen, when
the green light is sent into oblivion (off), a magenta screen is perceived because the
brain combines the red and blue lights that are reflected through the lens onto the
screen.
