Glossary
This glossary defines the technical terms used in this white paper.
Term
Definition
Collision
The situation where two or more stations try to send a data packet on the
same network at the same time. The result of a collision is generally a
garbled message.
Internet
A global network connecting millions of computers.
Intranet
A network based on TCP/IP protocols that belongs to an organization,
usually a corporation, and is accessible only by the organization's members,
employees, or others with authorization. An intranet's Web sites look and
act like any other Web sites, but the firewall surrounding an intranet fends
off unauthorized access.
Local Area
A computer network that spans a relatively small area. Most LANs are
Network (LAN)
confined to a single building or group of buildings.
Packet
A piece of a message transmitted over a packet-switching network. Besides
data, a packet contains the address of its destination.
Segment
A network that is bounded by switches. Dividing an Ethernet into multiple
segments is a common way to increase bandwidth on the LAN.
