    Model CA31 Expansion Unit Preface This manual describes SBS's Model CA31 Mini-Tower PCI-To-PCI Expansion Unit that provides seven additional PCI slots to PCI systems. It includes information about the Expansion Unit’s operation, installation, and configuration. To simplify installation and eliminate operation problems, SBS recommends that you review this manual before installing your Expansion Unit.

    32-bit PCI slots in a mini-tower chassis. Model CA31 provides two short form +5V and five long form +5V PCI card slots; the long form slots can be filled by either long or short form PCI cards. Each slot is master capable, allowing peer-to-peer communication within the PCI environment.

    Model CA31 Expansion Unit 1.1 Technical Information And Specifications 1.1.1 Architecture The host card installs in the host chassis. The host chassis connects via cable to the integrated controller in the backplane of the enclosure creating an Expansion Unit that allows data exchange between the two systems. The Expansion Unit uses a multi-level PCI-to-PCI bridge architecture.

    Model CA31 Expansion Unit 1.1.4 Power Requirements The backplane requires 0.5A at 5V maximum DC power from the expansion chassis. The host card requires 0.5A at 5V maximum DC power from the host chassis. 1.1.5 Power Supplies AC input - 115V or 230V (switchable).

    The SBS Expansion Unit package contains the following items. Please identify each item and notify SBS Connectivity Products (651-905-4700) if any are missing: One Model CA31 mini-tower enclosure Part Number: 85422200. One universal PCI host circuit card - Part Number: 85224036.

    Model CA31 Expansion Unit 2.1 Enclosure The expansion enclosure contains a seven-slot backplane with integrated controller, and the power supply. One end of the 4-foot Expansion Unit cable plugs into the integrated backplane controller connector of the expansion enclosure. The other end connects to the host card installed in the host system.

    Model CA31 Expansion Unit Power On/Off Switch Mini-Tower Enclosure Front Panel 2.2 Backplane And Integrated Controller The manufacturing default settings should not be changed except as noted below. Optional power ATX control is provided for the mini-tower chassis. This chassis uses a momentary push button switch to switch power on and off similar to the power switch used for ATX computers.

    Model CA31 Expansion Unit 2.4 Expansion Unit Cable A standard 4-foot, EMI-shielded cable connects the host card to the integrated backplane controller in the expansion enclosure. 2.5 Help!     Model CA31 Expansion Unit Chapter 3: Installation 3.0 Caution! Make sure power is OFF and power cords have been disconnected before installing cards in the expansion enclosure. Disconnect power cord to the host system before installing the host card. Avoid touching the card’s gold-plated edge connectors.

    Model CA31 Expansion Unit 5. Connect the SBS Expansion Unit cable to the host card. Tighten down the screws on the cable connector. 6. Connect the other end of the Expansion Unit cable to the backplane controller connector in the expansion enclosure. Tighten down the screws on the cable connector.

    Model CA31 Expansion Unit 3.2 Installing User Cards In Your Expansion Enclosure 1. Power down the expansion enclosure and disconnect its power cord. 2. Remove the screws that secure the cover. Set the screws aside, they will be used when replacing the cover. Do not remove any other screws.

    Model CA31 Expansion Unit Cards may also be accessed by removing three screws at the rear of the enclosure and sliding out the tray that holds the PCI cards and backpanel. Take care not to extend the tray to the point of straining the wires for power supply, power switch, and LED.

    Model CA31 Expansion Unit Appendix A: Glossary Bit: A single digit in a binary number (0 or 1). Byte: 8 bits. CPU: Central Processing Unit; processor. Downstream Transaction: A data transfer in which the initiator is on a PCI bus closer to the host system than the target is.
