Chapter 1: Introduction

General information

The BP4 blood pressure monitor uses the oscillometric method for measuring Non-Invasive Blood Pressure (NIBP).
NIBP measurement is based on the principle that pulsatile blood flow through an artery creates oscillations of the arterial
wall. The oscillometric device uses a blood pressure cuff to sense these oscillations that appear as tiny pulsations in cuff
pressure. The oscillometric devices measure the amplitude of pressure changes in the occluding cuff as the cuff deflates
from above systolic pressure. The amplitude suddenly increases as the pulse breaks through the occlusion in the artery.
As the cuff pressure decreases further, the pulsations increase in amplitude, reach a maximum (which approximates to
the max amplitude pressure (MAP)), and then diminish. The oscillometric method measures the MAP and determines
the systolic and diastolic pressures.
In this monitor, we have IHB technology (IHB = Irregular heartbeat). The IHB technology analyses pulse frequency and
detects irregular heartbeat during blood pressure measurement. If an irregular heartbeat occurs during the measurement,
the IHB symbol is displayed. IHB does not replace a cardiac examination, but it serves to detect pulse irregularities at an
early stage. This is automatically done by the device without the need for any adjustments. Unlike most common
monitors, BP4 monitor can distinguish between arrhythmias and artefacts due to great technical and physiological
precision in measurements.
The device estimates the systolic blood pressure during inflation and inflates to a proper cuff pressure (approximately
30-40 mmHg above the patient's systolic pressure). The advantage is Personalized Inflation for maximum comfort.
This user manual contains important safety information and provides step-by-step instructions for using the blood
pressure monitor. Read this information carefully before you use the device and save it for future reference.
