Quick Links

This text provides instruction for converting from 8 friction discs to 3 friction discs in the hook winch drop clutch.
Please refer to drawing 63052.
Preface:
Read and understand these instructions BEFORE working on the winch.
Follow all safety and operating instructions for the winch supplied with the tractor service manual set.
Thoroughly clean the outside of the winch and nearby surfaces of the tractor to prevent contamination from entering
winch gear cavity.
Make certain all service hoisting equipment is in reliable, safe condition. Park tractor on level ground with park brake
applied. Set up safe area working signs or barricades as required.
Procedure:
1. Start tractor and lower hook block onto shipping skid or wood blocks on the ground. Keep hook block and
sheaves out of direct contact with dirt that may damage bearings, sheaves and wire rope. Make certain there
is NO load applied to the hook winch drum or wire rope. Lower boom against lower limit stops and deploy the
counter-weight to the far limit stops. Stop engine and release trapped pressure from hydraulic reservoir as in-
structed in the tractor service instructions.
2.
Make certain hook winch housing has cooled to a safe temperature; typically less than 110 F (43 C). Place a
clean fi ve gallon (19L) bucket under the hook winch fi nal drive housing and remove the drain plug to drain the oil
from the winch gear cavity. The gear cavity holds approximately 16 qt. (15L). If the oil has been recently changed
and is clean, it may be reused. If the oil is contaminated it should be recycled or disposed of in an environmen-
tally responsible manner. Remove the fi ll plug near the top of the housing to speed oil draining. Install the drain
plug securely when oil has drained.
3. EVENLY remove capscrews and washers (71, 72) that secure cover (67) to the clutch housing. The capscrews
must be loosened evenly in a cross pattern to relieve spring tension.
4. Remove cover (67), thrust bearings (68, 69), springs (51) and planet carrier (19) from the clutch housing. Place
parts on a clean surface.
5. Disconnect drum clutch hydraulic release tube (129) from housing. Move the tube out of the way and cover open
end to prevent damage and entry of contamination.
6. Install a ½ in. NC lifting eye into the top of the clutch housing (28) and support the weight of the clutch housing
with a suitable hoist. Remove the capscrews and washers (49, 50) that secure the clutch housing to the ring gear
housing.
