1 Description of control unit The FireSafe is a control unit intended for use (in combination with a GfA or Kostal electrical drive that has a digital limit switch) on industrial doors that need to close in the event of an emergency.
Page 4
DOOR CONTROL FireSafe Manual For the event that the safety mechanism is triggered when the closed pre-limit switch is reached, you can choose in the menu whether it should then simply stop there, or the detection device should be turned off and the movement continued until the "closed" limit switch is reached.
DOOR CONTROL FireSafe Manual 2 Safety guidelines Read this manual carefully before starting any work on the control unit. Check the screw connections before switching the control unit on for the first time. NOTE: Before starting work on the control unit, disconnect the mains power supply and disconnect the battery terminals.
DOOR CONTROL FireSafe Manual 3 Installation For reliable, professional installation of this control unit, check and implement the points below: ü The control unit must be installed in a robust housing that fulfils the requirements with respect to the location in which it will be sited.
DOOR CONTROL FireSafe Manual 4 Connections Connect the mains supply (1N~230V AC) to terminal strip X1 (see Figure 1). The incoming supply for emergency power is also connected to X1. Connect the outgoing supply for emergency power to terminal strip X2 (see Figure 2). If an emergency power supply is not being used, connect the mains power supply to X2 (L and N) as well.

DOOR CONTROL FireSafe Manual An external up-stop-down control can be connected to terminal strip X7 (see Figure 7). The cover control including control LED can be inserted in X8. If X7 is not being used, connections 1 and 2 for the stop function must be connected together by a bridging wire.
Page 11
DOOR CONTROL FireSafe Manual A key switch can be connected to terminals 7 and 8 on terminal strip X9 (see Figure 9). This is installed in the cover and is used to switch the control unit on and off. If a key switch is not being used, the terminals for this input must be connected together by a bridging wire for the control unit to work.
Page 12
DOOR CONTROL FireSafe Manual A detection device can be connected to terminal strip X4 (see Figure 10). This could be a detection device triggered by air pressure (pressure wave contact) in combination with a 1.2KΩ resistor, or an electrical safety edge with an 8.2KΩ resistor (electrical anti-entrapment bar).
Page 13
DOOR CONTROL FireSafe Manual There are two outputs designed as potential-free make-and-break contacts on terminal strip X11 (see Figure 11). One of these is the siren that is switched when the door is moving. The other is the alarm that switches if the fire alarm contact input is active or if the battery for the emergency power supply is nearly flat.
Page 14
DOOR CONTROL FireSafe Manual The emergency power supply RS232 connection (if present) is connected to terminal X12 (see Figure 13). Connection 5 is the common/-. Connection 8 is low battery voltage and connection 9 is power failure/no mains power supply.
DOOR CONTROL FireSafe Manual 5 Commissioning After switching on the mains power supply, the door can be operated in deadman mode* using the pushbutton on the PC board. The direction of rotation should coincide with the buttons. If this is not the case, disconnect the mains power supply and swap the two phases (U and V) on the frequency control output.
Page 16

Page 17
DOOR CONTROL FireSafe Manual Impulse function The control unit has an impulse input. If one direction is deadman, the impulse should be retained in that direction. If it is released the drive will stop. If it is then pressed again, the other direction will become active.
Page 18
DOOR CONTROL FireSafe Manual Messages There is a potential-free make-and-break contact on the control unit to which a siren or warning light can be connected. This contact will switch when the door is moving. There is another potential-free make-and-break contact, alarm, that switches when the fire alarm input is active or if you have set the door to close when the emergency power supply battery voltage is low.
DOOR CONTROL FireSafe Manual 6 Menu Settings can be entered in the menu. There are three pushbuttons on the PC board to the right of the display: ˅, ˄ and stop/ok (see figure). In normal mode, these work as an up-stop-down control.
