    I/O capability of the Q22 - DATRAN II eXcel with both Analog & Digital Inputs & Outputs in the same form factor. The Q23 Module is a single board module combining both CPU and I/O on the one board. The whole module is built with surface mount technology allowing greater features and functionality to be built into the module.

    This section describes the functions and facilities of the Q23 Module. Functional Descriptions The photograph and diagram below shows the generalised layout of the Q23 Module printed circuit board and can be used to locate and identify the various parts and functions detailed in this section.

    Reference manual. System Status LEDs There are 4 system status LED’s on the front panel of the Q23 Module. These system status LED’s are used to indicate the following status and conditions: This green status LED is on whenever power is applied to the Q23 Module and the module is not in remote power control low battery shut down mode.

    The Q23 Module has 8 digital input channels. These are available at a 9-way connector labelled ‘DIGITAL IN’ on the front panel of the Q23 Module. The digital input channels are numbered 1 to 8. The terminal labelled ‘G’ is a system ground connection.

    Q23 Module. A global reset of the Q23 Module will reset many of the hardware peripherals in the module and also re-initialise the application software thus putting the Q23 Module into a known state. Under normal operating conditions the global reset is not used.

    240 to 255 An 8 position DIP switch is located on the middle left hand side of the Q23 Module as viewed with the front panel to the right. This DIP switch is used to set the required module address. The DIP switches are labelled 1 to 8. The ON position is also marked on the DIP switch, that is the direction that a DIP switch must be moved to for the DIP switch to be on.

    CONFIGURATION Configuration Jumpers The following list describes the function of each of the configuration jumpers on the Q23 Module: This jumper selects the output voltage range for Analog output channel No. 6. Open is 0 to 5V/0 to 20mA output range whilst closed is 0 to 10V output range.

    In the diagrams shown below the square pad on each jumper header is pin No 1. The pins are numbered 1, 2, and 3 away from pin No 1. Orientation of pin No 1 of the jumpers on the Q23 Module vary. i.e. Pin No. 1 is not always on the left.

    1 - 2 OPEN Analog Output Configuration The Analog output configuration jumpers are located at the center upper right hand side of the Q23 Module as viewed with the front display panel to the right.     Jumper J28 is used to select the digital outputs global over-current mode. Jumper J28 is located at the center right hand side of the Q23 Module as viewed with the front display panel to the right. Location of Digital Outputs Over-Current Jumper J28.

    When jumper J23 is installed the remote Power Control function is disabled and the Q23 module will remain permanently ON whenever power is applied to the unit. When jumper J23 is open the Q23 Module will power up whenever the Remote Power Control line is taken high and power is applied to the module.

    CONNECTIONS In a standard application of the Q23 Module the RS232 serial port operates at 19,200 baud, the maximum allowable cable length is typically 15 metres. Standard 8 way RJ45 crimp plugs are used in making up RS232 serial port interconnection cables. These plugs are designed for use with stranded (24/26 AWG) 8 core flat data cable.

    In the ON state a digital output channel is shorted to ground. In the OFF state a digital output channel is open circuited. Circuit details of a Digital Output Channel. The above circuit diagram shows the output circuit configuration of a digital output channel on the Q23 Module. The output circuit includes the following failsafe features. MOSFET Output Transistors The output MOSFET transistors have an ON resistance of typically 1 ohm and are capable of switching 3 amps at 5.5 to 26.5 volts.

  • Page 36 250 ohms resistor so that 0 to 20mA produces a voltage of 0 to 5 volts to the non-inverting input of the op-amp. In this configuration a voltage drop of 5 volts at 20mA is created in the 20mA loop by the Q23 Module. 4 to 20mA The 4 to 20mA loop configuration is the same as the 0 to 20mA loop described above, except the central processor scales the input to 4 to 20mA range.

    Module against reversed supply connection, over voltage supply and transient voltages. The fuse is a plug-in 2 amp TE5 fuse located on the Q23 Module. The fuse is located at the lower right side of the Q23 Module as viewed with the front display panel to the right.
  • Page 39 Jumper J23 is used to override the Q23 Module’s power control function. When J23 is installed power is permanently applied to the Q23 Module. With J23 open the Q23 Modules power is switched by the remote power control input line.
  • Page 41: Radio I.p.b. Communications

    RADIO I.P.B. COMMUNICATIONS The Q23 module can be connected to a remote master module using a data radio rather than I.P.B. RS485 direct connected wires. The Tait ORCA ELAN is a suitable data radio. The ORCA ELAN communicates at 1200 baud in a checksum validated packet protocol.

    The following sections detail the setting up and configuration of the above. I/O Mapping In a point to point system the inputs of one Q23 module are mapped to the outputs of the other Q23 module. The following table shows the I/O mapping Q23 Module A to Q23 module B.
  • Page 43 Radio or Line The two Q23 modules in the point-to-point system can be inter-connected with wires run between the I.P.B. RS485 RJ10 connectors or by Tait ORCA ELAN data radios connected to the RS232 port RJ45 connectors. The Line or Radio mode is set with DIP switch 7 as shown in the table below.
