This manual contains all on-board relevant documents related to the Simplified Voyage Data Recorder (S-VDR) application and to the “full” Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) application of a Consilium VDR. Note! The setting up, installation and service procedure, which shall be performed by specially trained technicians, is described in a separate manuals.

Anyway there is good practice to keep the equipment clean and free from dust. It is also important to make sure that all external cable and connectors are in good shape.

User information 3 General description 3.1 System description The VDR is designed to meet the performance and technical requirements stated in IMO Resolution A.861(20), MSC.214(81) and IEC 61996-1 for VDR and IMO MSC.163(78), MSC.214(81) and IEC 61996-2 for S-VDR The data items to be recorded are listed in IEC 61996-1 for full VDR and in IEC 61996-2 for S-VDR.

User information 4 Consilium VDR system The Consilium VDR is a distributed system that consists of a number of units connected to each other through Ethernet. There are three categories in a VDR system; input units, control units and storage units. A typical VDR system contains of a number of input units, a control unit also called the central, one remote control unit placed on or in the vicinity of the bridge and one or several storage units.

User information 4.2 Video input unit The Video input unit, called Video Grabber Unit (VGU) has 2 video input channels. unit records compresses the images using JPEG compression. The VDR system can have up to two video inputs units or four video inputs.
User information 4.5 Digital and analogue input unit The Digital and Analogue input unit, called signal converter is an optional unit composed by IO modules. The modules convert analogue or digital signals from different ships instruments into NMEA. 4.6 Remote Control Unit The daily user communication with the VDR is via the Remote Control Unit placed at the conning navigation workstation on the bridge.
User information 4.7 Storage units Storage units are those units who stores recorded data and allow retrieval of the data. The storage units for Consilium VDR are capsules, USB memory stick and Portable Black Box. 4.7.1 Capsules The mandatory storage unit is the fixed capsule or for S-VDR alternatively a floatfree capsule.

User information 5 System process Before the VDR system can be used it has to be configured by an authorized technician and also commissioned by a certified commissioning engineer. The number of types and signals to be recorded is stipulated in the regulations IEC 61996-1 for VDR and -2 for S-VDR.

User information 11 Power fail If the external power to the system is lost the VDR generates a power fail alarm. During power failure all input units apart from the audio is shut off in order to minimize the battery capacity. After two hours of power fail the unit shuts off itself.
User information 12 Regulations 12.1 Purpose of VDR According to IMO, the purpose of a Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) is to maintain a store, in a secure and retrievable form, of information concerning the position, movement physical status, command and control of a vessel over the period leading up to, and following, an incident having an impact thereon.
All APT performed on Consilium VDR's is managed from and registered in Consilium Navigation Service Center in Nacka, Sweden. A unique numbered certificate is issued for each APT and is only valid if signed by a technician approved by and listed at Consilium Navigation.

This manual describes the Voyage Data Pro Player, a program for playback of VDR data, recorded by any model of Consilium Voyage Data Recorders. It contains information on how to install the program, import data to the player and how to run the player.
2.2 Consilium Voyage Data Analyzing Player For detailed investigation purposes Consilium has developed an extended Voyage Data Player: Consilium Voyage Data Analyzing Player. This player has special enhanced functions for analyzing and penetration of the recorded data such as: Fast, slow, and static mode presentation, raw data and graphic data presentation, search functions etc.
