Notching Tips

See below for some helpful tips to keep your
machine performing its best and to obtain the best
notching results.
Only notch one workpiece at a time.
Smooth material will notch more easily than
rough or dirty material. Clean/deburr material
before inserting into the machine.
If the notching dies do not return to the open
position after operation, there may be a cut
off piece stuck in the way. Disconnect the
machine from power before removing the
guards and cut off piece.
Find and mark a straight "center" line paral-
lel to the workpiece edges (see Figure 9) on
either side of the workpiece to achieve even
notches. Align this line to the top of the notch-
ing hole for each operation so the second
notch will align with the first.

Lubricate the notching dies every 10–12 cuts
during continuous use.
Empty the chip drawer periodically to keep
cut off pieces from accumulating and lodging
in notching mechanisms.

Cutting Notches

Cutting a notch in a tube or pipe consists of pre-
paring the workpiece, lubricating the notching
dies, determining the size of notching hole need-
ed for the operation, and making two identical
cuts, one on either side of the workpiece. Once
a pipe or tube has been notched, the notched
edges can be tightly welded or otherwise joined
to another workpiece.
