11. Check belt tension (more than half inch of play is
too loose and no play in the belt is too ght). See page

OPERATING PROCEDURES
NOTE: Pre‐start checklists on page 12 must be met before
beginning the engine opera ng procedures.
NOTE: Do not open drain valves while the engine is
running.
NOTE: Choke posi on for star ng may vary depending
upon temperature and other factors. Once engine is
running and warm, turn choke to OFF posi on.
NOTE: Extend starter cord periodically to check its
condi on. If cord is frayed have it replaced immediately
by a Kohler authorized dealer.
NOTE: Do not crank engine con nuously for more than 10
seconds. Allow a 60 second cool down period between
star ng a empts. Faliure to follow these guidelines can
burn out the starter motor.
NOTE: If engine develops sufficient speed to disengage
starter but does not keep running (a false start), engine
rota on must be allowed to come to a complete stop
before a emp ng to restart engine. If starter is engaged
while flywheel is rota ng, starter pinion and flywheel ring
gear may clash, resul ng in damage to starter.
1. Turn the FUEL SHUT‐OFF lever to the ON posi on (ON
posi on is to the right).
2. Insert key into KEY BOX. Turn key from OFF posi on to
the ON posi on.
3. Start engine as follows:
Cold Engine: Place THROTTLE LEVER midway between idle
and max speed posi on. Place CHOKE LEVER into ON
posi on (ON posi on is to the right).
Warm engine: Place thro le lever midway between idle
and max speed posi ons. Return choke to OFF posi on as
soon as engine starts. A warm engine usually does not
require choke on.
4. Electric Start: Ac vate starter switch by turning key
further clockwise. Release switch as soon as engine
starts. If starter does not turn engine over, shut off starter
immediately. Do not make further a empts to start engine
un l condi on is corrected. Do not jump start. See your
Kohler authorized dealer for trouble analysis.
Retractable Start: Slowly pull STARTER HANDLE un l just
past compression‐STOP! Return starter handle; firmly pull
straight out to avoid ropewear from starter rope guide.

5. Gradually return choke control to OFF pos on (to the
right) a er engine starts and warms up. Leave choke
par ally on un l engine warms up.

6. A er the engine has started, the engine thro le lever
must only be used in two posi ons. The two posi ons
are LOW IDLE OR MAX IDLE ONLY to avoid damage to the
VACUUM PUMP (shown in figure 12). The thro le lever
should never be le in a posi on between low idle and
max idle while the engine is running.
The idle posi on uncouples the clutch on the engine,
which disengages the vacuum pump. Idle speed is
commonly used to warm the engine up and to cool down
the pump between holes. Pu ng the thro le lever in the
max idle posi on engages the vacuum pump and keeps
the pump running at the required opera ng speed.
7. Adjust the drip rate of the needle
valve to your desired needs by turning
the set screw on the top of the needle
valve (shown in figure 13). The needle
valve is a ached to the mineral oil
tank on the top of the machine. The
faster the oil drips, the more defined
the white smoke coming out of the
dispensing rod will be.
8. The operator is now ready to inject exhaust into pest
burrows. This is done by inser ng a dispensing wand into
a burrow hole. Once the wand is pois oned to where the
exhaust is flowing well into the tunnel, shovel dirt around
the dispensing wand to create an air ght seal. This allows
the exhaust to travel down and fill the tunnel. If the white
smoke is seen escaping out of a secondary burrow hole,
the user should plug the hole. This allows the smoke to
con nue filling the en re burrow without was ng me
servicing the same burrow. A er 3‐8 minutes pass
(depending on the size of the burrow), it is me to move
the dispensing wand to the next burrow and plug the hole
that the wand was removed from.
