NOTICE: On B-car wirh V-8 engine, lhe power
steering pump mounting bracker does not have a
square drive hole for adjusting drive belt rension. A
boss on the waterpump housing provides a fulcrum for
adjustment.
CAUTION: Do not movo pump by prying
againal roservoir or by pulling on fillêr
necK.
2. Move pump, with belt in place until belt is tensioned
lo sp€cifications as indicated by Tool J-2360O (Fig. 383- t 1).
3. Tighten pump brac€ adjusting nut. Then tighten
pivot bolt nut.

The following procedure outlines methods to identify
and isolat€ power steering hydraulic circuit difiiculti€s. The
lest provides means ofdetermining whether power steering
system hydraulic parts are actually faulty. this test will
result in readings indicating faulty hydraulic operation, and
will help to identify the faulty component.
Before performing hydraulic circuit test, carefuliy
check belt tension, fluid level and codition of driving
pulley.
Power Steering Hydraulic System Test
Engine must be at normâl operating temperature.
Inflateftont tires to correct pressure. All testsale madewith
engine idling, check idle âdjustment and if nec€ssary adjust
engine idle speed to cor.ect specifications listed in Section
6C ând proceed as followsl
1. With engine NOT running, disconnect prcssure hose
from pump and install Tool J-5176 using a spâre pressure
hose between gage and pump. Gage must be between shut-
oiT valv€ and pump. Open shut-oiï valve.
2. Remove filler cap ftom pump reservoir and check
fluid level. Fill pump reservoir to fùll mark on dip stick.
Stârt engine ând, moûentarily holdirg steering wheel
against stop, check connections at Tool J-5176 for l€akâge.
3. Bl€€d system âs outlined under Maintenance and
4. Insert thermorneter (Tool J-5421) in reservoir filler
opening. Move steering wheel from stop to stop several
times until thermometer indicates that hydrâùlic fluid in
rese oir has reached temperature of 150'to 170'F (65'to
77',C).
CAUTION: To prêvênt scrubbing flat
spots on tires, do nol turn steering wh€ol
moro thân fivo timos without rolling cai
to change lirô-to-floor contact area.
5. Start engine ând check fluid level adding any fluid
if requiæd. \Ihen engine is at normâl operating
temperature, the initial pressure read on the gage (vaive
open) should be in the 80-125 psi (550-860 kPa) range.
Should this pressure be in excess of 200 psi (1380 kPa) -
check lhe hoses for restrictions and lh€ poppet valve for
6. Close gate vâlve fully 3 times. Record the highest
pr€ssures attained each time.
CAUTION: Do not leav6 valve fully closed
for more than 5 seconds as th€ oumD
could be damagod intornally.
â. If the pressures r€corded are within the listed sp€cs
and the range of readings are rvithin 50 psi (345 kPa), the
pump is functioning within specs. (Ëx. Spec. 1250 - 1350
PSI (8620 9310 kPâ) readings - 1270 - 1275 - 1280psi (8755-
8790-8825 kPa).
- - b. If th€ pressures r€corded are high, bu! do not
repeâr wirhin 50 PSI (345 kPa), the flow conrrolling valve
is sticking, Remove the valve, cleân it and remove anyburrs
using crocus cloth or fine hone. Ifthe system contains some
dirt, flush it. Ifit is exceptionally dirty, both the pump and
th€ geâr must be completely disassembled, cleaned, flushed
and reassembled before frrther usage.
c.Ifth€ pressur€s recorded are constânt, bùt more thân
l0o PSI (690 kPa), below the low listed spec., replace the
flow conkol valve ând recheck. Ifthe pressures âre still low,
replâc€ the rotating group in the pump.
7. lf the pump checks within specifications, leâve the
valve open and tuû (or have turn€d) the st€ering wheei into
both corne$. Record the highest pressures and compare
with the maximum pump pressure recorded. If this pressure
cannot be built in either (or one) side of the gear, the gear
is leaking internally and must bedisassembled and repaired.
See rhe Overhaul Manual Section 38.
8. Shut off engine, remove testing gâg€, spâr€ hose.
reconnect pr€ssure hose, check fluid level andlor make
needed r€pâirs.

POWER STEERING GEAR
Rêmoval
NOTICE: Disconnect prcssure and retum hoses from
the steering gear hoùsing. Cap both hoses and steering
gear oudets to prev€nt foreign materiâl from entering
lhesystem. {fler service is performed and steering gear
is installed, connect the p.essure and return hoses to
the steering geâr housing. Install couplingshield. Bl€ed
system as outiined under "Maintenance and
l. Disconûect ballery ground cable and remove
coupling shield.
2. Remove retaining nuts, lock washe$. and bolts at
steering coupling to steering shaft flange.
J. Remove pitman arm nut ând wâsher from pitman
shaft and mark relation of arm positioî to shaft.
4. R€move pitmân arm with Tool J-6632.
5. Remove screws securing steering geâr to frame ând
remov€ gear from vehicle.
