The length of that swing is the same as the internal length of a standard 8000 series vial, about two inches. With each swing the balls impact against one end of the vial, simultaneously milling the sample to a powder and blending it. -

Assuming a grinding vial is clamped into the mill and the lid is down, pressing START will initiate a run of 5 minutes.

Page 11: Operation
After the unit is plugged in, switch the power on by means of the rocker switch. The timer will briefly display “SPEX SamplePrep” and “8000 Series Mixer/Mill”. This will then change to show the default timer setting of 5:00. -

This will limit contamination. An inappropriate choice of balls, such as tungsten carbide balls in an alumina container, can damage the container.
