Locking

Turn the emergency key element clockwise
X
as far as it will go to position 1.

On right-hand-drive vehicles, turn the
emergency key element anti-clockwise.
Turn the emergency key element back and
X
remove it.
Make sure that the doors and the boot lid/
X
tailgate are locked.
Insert the emergency key element into the
X
key.

Important safety notes

WARNING
Exhaust fumes could enter the vehicle interior
if the engine is running and the boot lid/tail-
gate is open. This could poison you. There-
fore, you should make sure that the boot lid/
tailgate is always closed when the engine is
running.
! The boot lid/tailgate swings upwards and
to the rear when opened. Therefore, make
sure that there is sufficient clearance
above and behind the boot lid/tailgate.

Opening dimensions of the boot lid/tail-
gate (
page 394).

Do not leave the key in the boot/luggage
compartment. You could otherwise lock your-
self out.

Vehicles without the boot lid remote clos-
ing feature: the boot lid can be:
opened and closed manually from outside

opened automatically from outside
R
opened automatically from inside
R
unlocked with the emergency key element
R
Vehicles with the boot lid remote closing
feature: the boot lid can be:
opened and closed manually from outside

opened and closed automatically from out-
R
side
opened and closed automatically from
R
inside
unlocked with the emergency key element
R
On the CLS Shooting Brake, you can:
open and close the tailgate manually from
R
outside
open and close the tailgate automatically
R
from outside
open and close the tailgate automatically
R
from inside
limit the opening angle of the tailgate
R
unlock the tailgate using the emergency
R
key element
