QUICK START GUIDE
1

Identify the components in your system package

The SmartSensor Rail is used to detect stopped and moving vehicles
in railroad crossing islands. The image to the right shows the contents
of a SmartSensor Rail package. The contents of your package may
vary.
2

Mount the sensor

Use the guidelines below to prop-
erly mount the SmartSensor Rail:
˽
Mount the SmartSensor Rail
on entrance gate masts or on
stand alone poles at the edge of
the Minimum Track Clearance
Distance zone (MTCD).
˽
Mount the sensors so that
each sensors' 90-degree, 140
feet (42.7 m) detection pattern
spans the crossing island.
˽
The SmartSensor Rail rec-
ognizes lanes of traffic and
detects the presence of moving
or stopped vehicles in up to
ten lanes.
˽
For larger or irregularly-
shaped crossings, multiple
sensors (up to eight) may be used without interference.
˽
Position the sensor so that it will be able to detect the entire area of interest. Acoid occlusion by install-
ing the sensor away from trees, signs and other roadside structures.
˽
A minimum of 6 feet (1.8 m) to the first lane of interest is required.
˽
The sensor should not be mounted with signs and other flat surfaces directly behind it. This will help
reduce multiple reflection paths from a single vehicle.
