TROUBLESHOOTING

The engine malfunctions can result from a large number of causes. The following describes symptoms that are
encountered relatively more often than others, their major causes and remedies.
B When it is difficult to start the engine
Cause
Fuel doesn't flow.
Valve clearance is not as specified.
Engine oil becomes thick in cold
weather and engine cranks slow.
Low compression
Battery is discharged and the engine
will not crank.
Clogged air cleaner
Spark plug electrodes are wet with
gasoline
Defective starter
Defective main switch
Defective vaporizer
Defective lock off valve
Disconnection
B When output is insufficient
Cause
Compression is insufficient.
Fuel is insufficient.
Overheating of moving parts
Valve clearance is not as specified.
Air cleaner is dirty.
Defective spark plug
Defective ignition coil
Disconnection
Countermeasures
*
Check the fuel tank, fuel filter, fuel hoses and fuel pump.
*
As fuel will be filtered by the filter, if there should be water
or other foreign matters on the filter, clean the filter.
* Adjust valve clearance when the engine is cold.
* Change grade of oil according to the weather
(temperature).
* Bad valve or excessive wear of rings, pistons and liners
cause insufficient compression. Replace with new parts.

Charge battery.
*
In winter, always remove battery from machine, charge
fully and keep indoors. Install in machine at time of use.
* Clean or replace.
* Dry electrode and restart.
* Repair or replace.
* Repair or replace.
* Replace.
* Replace.
* Check the wire harness.
Countermeasures
* Bad valve or excessive wear of rings, pistons and liners
cause insufficient compression. Replace with new parts.
* Check fuel system.
*
Check lubricating oil system.
*
Check to see if lubricating oil filter is working properly.
*
Filter element deposited with impurities would cause poor
lubrication. Change element.
*
Check to see if the clearance of bearing is within factory specs.
* Adjust valve clearance when the engine is cold.
* Clean or replace.
* Clean or replace.

* Check the wire harness.
