    Seats and Seat Controls This section tells you about the seats them, and fold them up and down. Manual Front Seat CAUTION: You can lose control of the vehicle if you try to adjust a manual driver’s seat while the vehicle is moving.
  • Page 16 Manual Lumbar Support (If Equipped) If you have this feature, there will be a knob on the outside of the driver’s bucket seat. Turn the knob toward the front of the vehicle to increase lumbar support and toward the rear of the vehicle to decrease lumbar support.
  • Page 17 But don’t have a seatback reclined if your vehicle is moving. CAUTION: Sitting in a reclined position when your vehicle is in motion can be dangerous. Even if you buckle up, your safety belts can’t do their job when you’re reclined like this. The shoulder belt can’t do its job because it won’t be against your body.
  • Page 18 Seatback Latches (Regular or Extended Cab Only) The front seatback folds forward to let people get into the rear seat or to access the storage area behind the seat. To fold the front seatback forward, push the lever on the side of the seat rearward and pull the seatback forward.
  • Page 19 Easy Entry Seat (Extended Cab Models) The right front bucket or split bench seat of your vehicle makes it easy to get in and out of the rear vehicle area. Tilt the right front seatback completely forward and the whole seat will slide forward. Move the seatback to its original position after someone gets into the rear seat area.

    If I’m a good driver, and I never drive far from home, why should I wear safety belts? You may be an excellent driver, but if you’re in an accident even one that isn’t your fault your passengers can be hurt. Being a good driver doesn’t protect you from things beyond your control, such as bad drivers.
  • Page 26 3. Pick up the latch plate and pull the belt across you. Don’t let it get twisted. The shoulder belt may lock if you pull the belt across you very quickly. If this happens, let the belt go back slightly to unlock it. Then pull the belt across you more slowly.

In a crash, you wouldn’t have the full width of the belt to spread impact forces. If a belt is twisted, make it straight so it can work properly, or ask your dealer to fix it.

    To unlatch the belt, just push the button on the buckle. The belt should go back out of the way. Before you close the door, be sure the belt is out of the way. If you slam the door on it, you can damage both the belt and your vehicle.

    The best way to protect the fetus is to protect the mother. When a safety belt is worn properly, it’s more likely that the fetus won’t be hurt in a crash. For pregnant women, as for anyone, the key to making safety belts effective is wearing them properly.

The path of an inflating air bag must be kept clear. Don’t put anything between an occupant and an air bag, and don’t attach or put anything on the steering wheel hub or on or near any other air bag covering.
  • Page 38 How does an air bag restrain? In moderate to severe frontal or near even belted occupants can contact the steering wheel or the instrument panel. Air bags supplement the protection provided by safety belts. Air bags distribute the force of the impact more evenly over the occupant’s upper body, stopping the occupant more gradually.
  • Page 39 Let only qualified technicians work on your air bag system. Improper service can mean that your air bag system won’t work properly. See your dealer for service. NOTICE: If you damage the covering for the driver’s or the right front passenger’s air bag, the bag may not work properly.

  • Page 41 To turn off the right front passenger’s air bag, insert your ignition key into the switch, push in, and move the switch to AIR BAG OFF. The AIR BAG OFF light will come on to let you know that the right front passenger’s air bag is off. The right front passenger’s air bag will remain off until you turn it back on again, and the AIR BAG OFF light will stay on to remind you that the air bag is off.

Servicing Your Air Bag-Equipped Vehicle Air bags affect how your vehicle should be serviced. There are parts of the air bag system in several places around your vehicle.

    Adding Equipment to Your Air Bag-Equipped Vehicle If I add a push bumper or a bicycle rack to the front of my vehicle, will it keep the air bags from working properly? As long as the push bumper or bicycle rack is attached to your vehicle so that the vehicle’s basic structure isn’t changed, it’s not likely to keep the air bags from working properly in a crash.
  • Page 44 When you sit in a center seating position, you have a lap safety belt, which has no retractor. To make the belt longer, tilt the latch plate and pull it along the belt. To make the belt shorter, pull its free end as shown until the belt is snug.

    Rear Seat Passengers (Extended Cab Jump Seats) Lap Belt These are reserve seating positions equipped with lap belts only. (If your extended cab pickup has the optional side access panel, there’s only one reserve seating position.) It’s very important for rear seat passengers to buckle up! Accident statistics show that unbelted people in the rear seat are hurt more often in crashes than those who are wearing safety belts.

    To make it shorter, pull the belt as shown until it is snug. Buckle and position it the same way as the lap part of the driver’s safety belt. See “Driver Position” in the Index. Make sure the release button on the buckle is positioned so you would be able to unbuckle the safety belt quickly if you ever had to.

Neither the distance traveled nor the age and size of the traveler changes the need, for everyone, to use safety restraints. In fact, the law in every state in the United States and in every Canadian province says children up to some age must be restrained while in a vehicle.

    Restraint Systems for Children An infant car bed (A), a special bed made for use in a motor vehicle, is an infant restraint system designed to restrain or position a child on a continuous flat surface. Make sure that the infant’s head rests toward the center of the vehicle.

If your child restraint has a top strap, it should be anchored. Anchor the top strap to this bracket (regular or extended cab).

    Safety Belt Extender If the vehicle’s safety belt will fasten around you, you should use it. But if a safety belt isn’t long enough to fasten, your dealer will order you an extender. It’s free. When you go in to order it, take the heaviest coat you will wear, so the extender will be long enough for you.

    Manual Windows Turn the hand crank on each door to raise or lower your manual side door windows. Power Windows (If Equipped) If you have power windows, the controls are on each of the side doors. With power windows, the switches control the windows when the ignition is on, in ACCESSORY, or when Retained Accessory Power (RAP) is active.
  • Page 75 Express Down Window The driver’s window switch also has an express feature that allows you to lower the window without holding the window switch. Press the driver’s window switch down briefly to activate the express feature. Lightly tap the switch to open the window slightly.
  • Page 76 Sliding Rear Window (If Equipped) Squeeze the latch in the center of the window and slide the glass to open it. When you close the window, be sure the latch is engaged. Keys CAUTION: Leaving children in a vehicle with the ignition key is dangerous for many reasons.

When a new vehicle is delivered, the dealer provides the owner with a pair of identical keys and a key code number. The key code number tells your dealer or a qualified locksmith how to make extra keys.
  • Page 78 NOTICE: Your vehicle has a number of features that can help prevent theft. But you can have a lot of trouble getting into your vehicle if you ever lock your keys inside. You may even have to damage your vehicle to get in. So be sure you have extra keys.

    Programmable Automatic Door Locks (If Equipped) If your vehicle has power door locks, it is equipped with a feature that enables you to program your power door locks. The following is a list of the available programming options: All doors lock/Only the driver’s door unlocks: Press the lock side of the power lock switch on the door panel once and then the unlock side once.

    Rear Door Security Lock (If Equipped) With this feature, you can lock the rear doors so they can’t be opened from the inside by passengers. To use one of these locks: 1. Open one of the rear doors. 2. You will find a security lock lever located on the inside edge of the door.

    Matching Transmitter(s) to Your Vehicle Each remote keyless entry transmitter is coded to prevent another transmitter from unlocking your vehicle. If a transmitter is lost or stolen, a replacement can be purchased through your dealer. Remember to bring any remaining transmitters with you when you go to your dealer.
  • Page 84 To replace the battery in the keyless entry transmitter: 1. Insert a thin coin in the slot between the covers of the transmitter housing near the key ring hole. Remove the bottom by twisting the coin. 2. Remove and replace the battery with a three volt CR2032 or equivalent battery, positive (+) side up.
  • Page 85 Third Door (Extended Cab) (If Equipped) Your vehicle may be equipped with a side access panel for convenience in loading and unloading cargo. To open the side access panel, first open the driver’s front door. Then, use the handle located on the front edge of the door panel to open it.

    If a door is opened without the key or the remote keyless entry transmitter, the alarm will go off. Your vehicle’s headlamps will flash and the horn will sound for 110 seconds, then will turn off to save the battery power.   • Page 89 Passlock Your vehicle is equipped with the Passlock theft deterrent system. Passlock is a passive theft deterrent system. Passlock enables fuel if the ignition lock cylinder is turned with a valid key. If a correct key is not used or the ignition lock cylinder is tampered with, fuel is disabled.

    Ignition Positions Use the key to turn the ignition switch to five different positions. ACCESSORY (A): This position lets you use things like the radio and the windshield wipers and power windows (if equipped) when the engine is off. Push in the key and turn it toward you.

    Retained Accessory Power (RAP) Your vehicle is equipped with a Retained Accessory Power (RAP) feature which will allow certain features on your vehicle to continue to work up to 20 minutes after the ignition key is turned to OFF. Your radio and power windows will work when the ignition key is in RUN or ACCESSORY.
