"The BP7004s have tonally accurate bass that's bound
to shake yer rump—low end that will cause your
neighbors to either envy you or want to puncture
your speaker cones with a screwdriver"
realistic, the kick and snare both sound-
ed accurate, and Michael's voice was
extraordinarily clear and transparent—
so much so, in fact, that I could hear his
inhalations between each line, some-
thing I had never noticed in previous
listening sessions.
"the BP7004s are bipolar
loudspeakers ... resulting,
in my opinion, in a much
more realistic image"
So much of rock and hip-hop can be
drowned out by speakers with a sloppy
low-end—speakers that sacrifice accu-
rate mids and highs to achieve the
thunderous low "drone" you hear from
many car stereo systems. These poorly
designed speakers are designed around
a couple of music styles only, so if you
try to play something outside the stan-
dard hip-hop repertoire, you'll hear the
same bass-heavy EQ curve etched onto
your music. Although I once was an
"The tonal balance of
the BP7004s was very
impressive"
example of a bass-driven enthusiast, I
have since discovered there is much
more going on in the high frequencies
and midrange than I first realized.
For me, the initial discovery came
through Red Rose Music's Spirit loud-
speaker—a speaker I really dig for
its clean, upfront presentation, vivid
soundstage and imaging, and extremely
transparent mids and highs. But as I
"successfully delivering
warm mids and highs,
and always managing
to sound engaging"
looked back, the Spirit's upfront presen-
tation was sometimes too aggressive,
creating an imbalance in the sound and
becoming fatiguing in the long run.The
BP7004 is much different, successfully
delivering warm mids and highs, and
always managing to sound engaging
(and certainly not fatiguing). On
Lovage's Music to Make Love to Your
Old Lady By [Tommy Boy], the "Anger
Management" track sent shivers down
my spine with its mix of jazz and
lounge-bar theatrics rolled up into a hip-
hop tortilla. The beat supplied by Kid
Koala is a simple, jazzy kick/snare
combination brought to life by the
BP7004's not overly bright, yet always
warm and airy midrange. In the song's
main chorus, this beat is coupled with
the sound of Mike Patton and Jennifer
Charles' duet, and the top octaves of
their voices are absolutely stunningly
revealed by the tweeter. Mike's voice
(often called an instrument in itself), is
complemented by Charles'upper range,
creating a third, more complex voicing
that is simply phenomenal.
"everything from deep
satisfying bass to a tonally
accurate rendering of
midrange and treble
instruments, complete
with the spine-tingling
sound of air and space"
I'm sometimes disappointed to find a
really good loudspeaker that performs
in the mid- and high-frequency depart-
ments, yet doesn't have the balls in the
bass.The BP7004s combine a fantastic
middle and high section with a built-in
subwoofer, so there's no need to even
think about spending more money on a
sub.The BP7004s have tonally accurate
bass that's bound to shake yer rump—
low-end that will cause your neighbors
to either envy you or want to puncture
your speaker cones with a screwdriver.
Chuck D. from Public Enemy said it
best,"Bass! How low can you go!"Well,
Mr. D., these speakers are "the bomb!" I
appreciated being able to adjust the
subwoofer level to tune the speaker's
bass output to fit the requirements of
whatever song I wanted to hear. What
fun! The "Murderers" cut from John
Frusciante's To Record Only Water for
Ten Days [Warner Brothers] shows you
just how much fun you can have with
an adjustable subwoofer level control.
"extraordinarily clear
and transparent ...
the top octaves of their
voices are absolutely
stunningly revealed"
The song starts off with a programmed
beat that quickly leads to the opening
riff. You can listen to this song five
times in a row and each time you hear
something different; when you push
the subwoofer to go lower and louder,
the beat gets more interesting each
time, yet it never distracts you from
the amazing textural tapestry that
Frusciante weaves with each electric
guitar note. Tonally accurate bass is
always available to you, but I often
found it cooler to fatten up the lower
end at least a bit. From accurate mids
and highs to a deep satisfying low end,
this speaker did it all for me.
