Meeting High-End Expectations on a Modest Budget
Definitive Technology BP7004 Bipolar SuperTowers
"This speaker did it all for me ... these speakers are 'the bomb'!"

A
crucial and exciting
part of choosing
gear is the search
for synergy among
components within
your allotted budget. I recently
had the chance to audition
a system that included the
Philips DVD963SA DVD/SACD
player, a Portal Panache inte-
grated amplifier, and Definitive
Technology's BP7004 loud-
speakers. The system met all
my expectations and then
some, giving me everything
from deep satisfying bass to a
tonally accurate rendering of
midrange and treble instru-
ments, complete with the
spine-tingling sound of air and
space around those instru-
ments. In short, this system
put the fun back in listening—
and at a reasonable price. The
system's
components
an uncanny complementary
quality—each element playing
off the strengths of the others.

speakers, smaller versions of the
BP7002 SuperTowers (note, though,
that they are "smaller" relative to the
very big sound and value that all
members of the SuperTower speaker
family seem to offer). The BP7004
features bipolar driver arrays (with iden-

Whatever I chose to throw at
these speakers, I was always
able to hear something good
that I hadn't heard before—
especially in the bottom
octaves. Can you say FUN?
Couple the Def Techs with
the high-resolution Philips
player and the potent Portal
Panache, which is more than
able to push the speakers
with oomph and clarity, and
you've got a perfect three-
way combo.
The tonal balance of the
BP7004s was very impressive.
Because the BP7004s are
bipolar loudspeakers, music
emanates from both the
front and back, resulting, IMO,
in a much more realistic
image. On Michael Jackson's
Thriller [Sony], the "Billie
Jean" track starts with a simple kick
and snare and evolves into the
complex tapestry of an eight-note bass
line accompanied by a funky guitar
lick—a simple yet effective passage that
the Definitives cleanly execute.The gui-
tar had a clean tone that sounded very
