Safety Warnings and Instructions: Sanders
• ALWAYS WEAR EYE AND RESPIRATORY PROTECTION.
• Clean your tool out periodically.
Other Important Safety Warnings and Instructions
Sanding
SANDING LEAD BASED PAINT
Sanding of lead based paint is NOT RECOMMENDED due to the difficulty of controlling the
contaminated dust. The greatest danger of lead poisoning is to children and pregnant
women.
Since it is difficult to identify whether or not a paint contains lead without a chemical analysis,
we recommend the following precautions when sanding any paint:
PERSONAL SAFETY
• No children or pregnant women should enter the work area where the paint sanding is
being done until all clean up is completed.
• A dust mask or respirator should be worn by all persons entering the work area. The filter
should be replaced daily or whenever the wearer has difficulty breathing.
• NOTE: Only those dust masks suitable for working with lead paint dust and fumes should
be used. Ordinary painting masks do not offer this protection. See your local hardware
dealer for the proper (NIOSH approved) mask.
• NO EATING, DRINKING or SMOKING should be done in the work area to prevent
ingesting contaminated paint particles. Workers should wash and clean up BEFORE
eating, drinking or smoking. Articles of food, drink, or smoking should not be left in the work
area where dust would settle on them.
ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY
• Paint should be removed in such a manner as to minimize the amount of dust generated.
• Areas where paint removal is occurring should be sealed with plastic sheeting of 4 mils
thickness.
• Sanding should be done in a manner to reduce tracking of paint dust outside the work
area.
CLEANING AND DISPOSAL
• All surfaces in the work area should be vacuumed and thoroughly cleaned daily for the
duration of the sanding project. Vacuum filter bags should be changed frequently.
• Plastic drop cloths should be gathered up and disposed of along with any dust chips or
other removal debris. They should be placed in sealed refuse receptacles and disposed of
through regular trash pick-up procedures. During clean up, children and pregnant women
should be kept away from the immediate work area.
• All toys, washable furniture and utensils used by children should be washed thoroughly
before being used again.
Motor
Be sure your power supply agrees with nameplate marking. 120 Volts AC only means your
tool will operate on standard 60 Hz household power. Do not operate AC tools on DC. A
rating of 120 volts AC/DC means that you tool will operate on standard 60 Hz AC or DC
power. This information is printed on the nameplate. Lower voltage will cause loss of power
and can result in over-heating. All Black & Decker tools are factory-tested; if this tool does
not operate, check the power supply.
Operating Instructions
PAPER CLAMPS
WARNING: To prevent accidental operation, turn off and unplug sander before
performing the following operations. Failure to do this could result in serious
personal injury.
To operate the paper clamps on your sander, simply lift them up with your fingertip, as shown
in Figure 1. Rotate the clamp lever downward until the clamp is fully opened.
PAPER ATTACHMENT
TURN OFF AND UNPLUG SANDER
Carefully center the sandpaper on the rubber pad (platen) and pull the ends up around the
front and rear ends of the platen. Pull firmly to ensure tight paper to platen fit and clamp in
place. To close the clamps, rotate the clamp handles back up as far as they will go and lock
in place as shown in Figure 1.
NOTE: Tight sandpaper lasts longer and produces a more uniform removal rate
SWITCH
To turn the tool on, hold it as shown in Fig. 2 and push the portion of the switch marked "I".
To turn the tool off, push the portion of the switch marked "O".
SPEED CONTROL DIAL
The speed control dial allows you to increase or decrease speed from 6500 -10,000 Orbits
Per Minute. The optimal speed setting for each application is very much dependent on
personal preference. You may want to experiment on a piece of scrap to determine what
gives you the best combination of finish quality and material removal rate for your
application. Generally, you will want to use a higher setting on harder materials and a lower
setting on softer materials. Material removal rate increases as speed increases.
OPERATION
To operate your sander, grasp it as shown in Figure 3 and turn it on. Move it in long,
sweeping strokes along the surface, letting it do the work. Pushing down on the tool while
sanding actually slows the removal rate and produces an inferior quality surface. Be sure to
check your work often, this sander is capable of removing material rapidly, especially with
coarse paper.
When sanding painted surfaces, you may find that the sandpaper becomes clogged with
paint rather quickly. it may be better to use a heat gun for removing paint before the surface
is sanded.
Your sander is designed to sand flush on three sides for getting into corners, and its light
weight makes it ideal for sanding overhead.
To produce the smoothest finish possible, start with coarse grit sandpaper and then go to a
medium grit. When a smooth surface has been attained, use fine grit paper until a really
professional looking finish is achieved. In many cases, this last step eliminates the need for
any hand sanding at all.
SURFACE PREPARATION
Before removing paint or varnish from doors, window frames, skirtings etc., first determine
whether the existing finish is in poor condition or not. It would be classed as poor if it were
cracking or flaking off the surface to such an extent that it could be easily removed with a
wire brush or scraper. If the old finish is adhering firmly, then there is no need to remove it.
Simply sand it down to remove any blemishes in the surface and matt it down sufficiently to
provide a "key" for the new paint. Start by using a coarse grade of paper to break up the hard
surface of the old paint and then change to a finer grade to prepare the surface for
undercoating. Make sure that all defects in the old paint work are removed. Old "run" or
"weep" marks can be dealt with very quickly by tilting the sander up very slightly on to the toe
of the platen and with a gentle scrubbing movement concentrate the action of the sander on
the thickened paint until it blends into the surrounding area. If the majority of old finish is
sound, but one or two patches are poor, remove the bad parts completely with extra coarse
sandpaper and then "feather edge" the adjacent sound paint so that it blends into the bare
section. When the complete area to be repainted is satin smooth, wipe it down very carefully
to remove dust and then apply one or two coats of undercoat. Lightly sand the undercoat
with a fine grade of paper before applying the top coat. When sanding painted or other
coated surfaces periodically examine the abrasive paper to see if it has become clogged
with gummy material from the work surface. Replace paper when this occurs.
DUST EXTRACTION / VACUUM ATTACHMENT
WARNING: Collected sanding dust from sanding surface coatings (polyurethane,
linseed oil, etc.) can self-ignite in sander dust bag or elsewhere and cause fire. To
reduce risk, empty bag frequently and strictly follow sander manual and coating
manufacturer's instructions.
Your sander is equipped with a dust extraction system which greatly reduces clean up time.
To extract dust you must first punch holes through your sandpaper to allow the dust to be
drawn through the tool by the vacuum cleaner.
Install a piece of sandpaper on the tool as shown in this manual. Position the paper punch
on a smooth flat surface with the spikes pointing up. Carefully position the sander's platen
against the side fence on the paper punch, as shown in Figure 4, and press it down so that
the spikes punch through the paper into the holes in the pad.
Insert the end of the supplied vacuum adapter into the dust extraction opening at the rear of
the sander, as shown in Figure 5. Push the adaptor into the sander as far as it will go. Attach
a standard vacuum cleaner hose.
Start the vacuum first and then the sander. Leave yourself enough slack so that you don't
pull the vacuum hose off the tool. It may prove helpful to attach the vacuum hose to the
power cord with twist ties to help keep it out of the way.
When you are finished sanding, turn off the sander first and then the vacuum cleaner.
MAINTENANCE
Use only mild soap and damp cloth to clean the tool. Never let any liquid get inside the tool;
never immerse any part of the tool into a liquid.
IMPORTANT: To assure product SAFETY and RELIABILITY, repairs, maintenance and
adjustment should be performed by authorized service centers or other qualified service
