    This Administrator’s guide is primary intended for system administrators. It aims to describe how to set up and to use an ADDS 5600. Please note that it does not aim to describe the workings of servers systems or the meanings of network related terms.
  • Page 6: Getting Started

    When using a remote management server, it might be comfortable to bypass the Configuration Wizard. For this purpose, after 30 seconds of inactivity, the Terminal will reboot with the default factory settings. ADDS 5600 Linux-Based Terminal following instructions, the 5600 will be installed on your network within a few minutes.

    This screen displays ADDS 5600 version number. If available, it displays the client model name and its reference number. Kiosk is particularly useful when administrator wishes to publish a full environment, whereas Desktop is useful when administrator wish to publish standalone applications.

    Administering the client Overview Administration on the ADDS 5600 is built around an internal web server. This offers a unique setup tool for both local and remote administration. For further information regarding remote administration, please see page 70. By opening up the Setup Manager, the ADDS 5600 invokes this internal web server.

    The Connection Manager displays the Configure Tab accordingly to User Permissions set. By default the Connections -> Configuration is disabled, therefore the configure Tab is not available to the ADDS 5600 user after the Setup is secured by a password.

Moving from one environment to the other requires a reboot. The Kiosk Mode does not require any settings. The Desktop Mode allows selecting the taskbar location and visibility (Auto Hide/Always Visible).

Please note that the Font Servers have to be installed and properly configured on the server.

Do keep in mind that XFS is known to offer better performance than NFS. The Test button allows checking settings of the Font Server. However, you can ensure that the Font Server is properly working by checking the fonts used within applications (Emulator, Browser, X11, Telnet…).

    (Emulator, Browser, Xpdf…). LPR: the Printing Engine The ADDS 5600 uses a LPR server to handle Print Jobs. LPR server receives Print Jobs from local applications (Emulator, Browser...) and from network (LPD protocol, SMB protocol, ThinPrint protocol).

    The client is set with the following default display settings: Display resolution - 800x600 Color depth – 16 In the dropdown list, the ADDS 5600 displays a selection of resolutions and frequencies supported by the 5600. It is highly recommended to use the Test button before saving new screen resolution settings.

    Mouse The ADDS 5600 supports both standard 3 buttons mice on PS/2 or USB. Additionally, the ADDS 5600 can be tuned to hide the mouse cursor. This is particularly useful in case no mouse is attached to the terminal. Touch screen The ADDS 5600 supports Touch screens from Elotouch (Accutouch and Intellitouch on serial port).

    Boundless Technologies The screen saver can be used to display digital media. The digital media shall be stored on a drive detected by the ADDS 5600 (See page 23). Network Hosts File If no DNS (Domain Name Service) is used on your corporate network, you can provide a list of hosts to translate between IP address and Hostname.

    The ADDS 5600 supports Rdate and NTP Time Servers. Once configured, the ADDS 5600 will fetch the date and time from the server using TIME or SNTP protocol for automatic synchronization of computers. If the DHCP is set to do so, Time server will be set automatically.

    By enabling SMB Server, the ADDS 5600 will be able to share its local resources with other computers on the network, may these local resources be Printer(s) or Storage device(s). Local Master Browser is a feature that shall be used when no WINS server is available on your network.

    The timeout value specifies in seconds for how long the ADDS 5600 will try to get an IP address. The default value is 60 seconds. You can increase this value in case your DHCP server waits a long time before assigning the IP address.

This protocol is very useful because it is the default protocol used by Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 95/98, Windows 2000 and Window XP to share disks and printers.

    Power Management This panel enables to set the Power Management options. Options available might depend on the hardware platform on which the ADDS 5600 is installed (Processor type, battery…). The most commonly used option is the shutdown procedure. This enables to specify what behavior is expected when the user shutdown the unit.
