5- SAFETY MEASURES The Victoria Pneumatic Planter is an implement which, like any other agricultural implement or machinery, requires certain safety measures and cares to avoid accidents: This warning symbol is used to avoid accidents. The instructions shown with this symbol are directed towards the operator or others users, and should be read and reviewed carefully.
Page 31
Never attempt to perform any adjustments or maintenance servicing while the machine is operating or in motion. Figure 8 Use extreme caution while circulating on hilly terrain. Over turning hazards. Figure 9 Avoid contacting skin and clothing with chemical products (fertilizers, treated seeds, etc.).
Be cautious while traveling under high voltage cables or lines. Figure 14 While working, always use safety shoes. Figure 15 6- MAINTENANCE • So that all the available resources of this implement are used with the utmost durability and precision, some essential cares should be addressed: •...
6.1 - Lubrication To reduce ware and tare between moving parts on the machine, it is necessary to perform a thorough lubrication job, as described on the following steps: • Verify the quality of the lubricant, regarding its efficiency and purity, avoid using prod- ucts contaminated by water, dirt, etc.
Figure 24 Figure 25 6.2 - Line Hub Maintenance After using the machine for approximately 500 worked hectares, or when there is noticeable slackness, it is recommended to perform maintenance on the plow disc hubs, dual offset discs , depth wheels and compacting wheels.
Figure 28 Figure 27 7.2 - Tires- Proper tire pressure is essential in prolonging the life-span of the tires. Thus, they should be kept at 90 to 95 PSI. 7.3 - Hose installation- Install the “male” quick-disconnect connectors onto the hoses, applying the proper pressures to avoid leaks.
7.5 - Gauge and closing wheels installation- Install the combination depth gauging assembly (A) and compactor assembly (B) onto the seeding lines, using screws (C) and (D), split-lock washers and nuts to be used in the mounting ar- eas. Figure 31 7.6 - Changing line spacing To change line spacing, raise the machine and lock-down the cylinder with transporting lockouts.
7.7 - Seed distribution transm. drive installation on Row Flex. lines- 7.7.1 - Chain Drive Systems Install the drive chain axle and fixtures separately, the gears Z-14(A) and the stops, one for each planting line. Secure the whole assembly via the line support bracket (B) using screws, nuts and washers.
Figure 36 7.9 - Ratchet Drive The Victoria Pneumatic Planter is equipped with four ratchets, these are found on the sides of the machine, and they are responsible for the axle movement of the driving wheels to the seed and fertilizer drive axles.
8- HITCHING-UP AND UN-HITCHING 8.1 - Hitching-up Using the adjustment rod (A), raise or lower the hitch until it is in-line with tractor’s tow bar. Drive in reverse and place the locking pin. Figure 38 Verify that the quick-disconnects are free of impurities before hooking-up the hoses to the tractor. When the quick-disconnects are not in use, seal them using the attached caps.
9- ADJUSTMENTS 9.1 - Changing gears for seed distribution The number of holes and slots on the discs, the size of the holes and slots, along with disc thickness can vary according to grain sizes and the desired quantities. To change the seed quantity per linear meter, can be done by changing the gears on the chain drive motor {A}(15, 17, 19, 23, and 25 teeth) and the driven axle {B}(30, 26, 22, 18 and 16 teeth).
9.1.1 - Seed density adjustment- The driving speeds, along with gear changes, will cause the seeding population to change on the lines, by adjusting the speeds to more or less, will change the metering rotation, which consequently changes the number of seeds to be ejected. Thus, for this reason, when seeking the highest system accuracy, the operational speeds need to be between 4 and 6 km/h for corn, and 6 to 8 km/h for soy.
Page 43
PNEUMATIC SEED DISTRIBUTION TABLE - 43 -...
9.1.2 - Cleaning out the fertilizer reservoir To protect against the corrosive effects of commercial fertilizers, the fertilizer reservoir should be cleaned out at the end of the planting season. For the best cleaning procedures, tilt the reservoir and remove the fertilizer distribution conveyor screw and remove all fertilizer deposits or residue.
To verify the adjustments, remove a minimum of three fertilizer output distribution ducts and attach plastic sacks in their places. Drive for about 100 meters in a straight line, which was previously marked-off on the terrain. Weigh the collected samples, and take an average of the 3 weights and multiply this value by the constant of each spacing.
- Drive the tractor on the marked-off area, using the same working speeds to be applied during the whole job. - Recommended speeds: 4.0 to 6.0 km/h when planting corn/sunflower/beans/sorghum/cotton-cleaned in acid. 6.0 km/h to 8.0 km/h when planting soy. . NOTE: Due to slippage indexing the feeding doses are approximate, correct as needed by changing the gear ratios.
9.4 - Oscillating cutting discs (direct planting)- The cutting discs have an oscillating side movement to follow the contours of the terrain. During the job avoid making sharp turns, or line components may be damaged in the process. The vertical oscillation (or fluctuation) of the discs are done by springs (A), which should have the proper tensions in accordance to the cutting demands and, permitting the needed movements when following the contours of the terrain, and avoiding obstacles.
Page 82
The ”V” compacting wheels apply side pressure on the soil, and can work in various positions according to the type of soil and hay covering conditions. Adjust the angle between the tires (vertex) using the lever (B). The Compacting planing wheel applies ground pressure on the center of the line being able to work in various positions, according to the soil and hay conditions.
9.6 - Wheel spring adjustment- The wheels of the machine have free movement to follow the contours of the terrain. The wheel tensions against the ground is done through springs (A),nuts and locknuts. NOTE: Always match tire calibrations. Never plant with tires of different patterns or widths. Figura 54 9.7 - Line markers- The use of line markers is very important, through their use you will achieve uniform planting lines,...
Figure 55 9.8 - Working angle- The marking discs (G) have angle adjustments to facilitate its work when opening the soil(demarcation), to do so simply loosen the nut (H) and adjust as necessary. See figure below. Figure 56 9.9 - Planter leveling- Using the extension arm (A) level the machine.
Figure 57 9.10 - Operational Key points- Re-tighten nuts and bolts after the first day of planting. Check all pins and cotter-pins. Take care in-between lubrications. The proper tire calibration is (90 PSI), to be applied to all and should be maintained for planting uniformity.
10- PLANING FOR PLANTING- Always consider that the number of harvest numbers are less then the number of seeds distributed in planting, the contributing factors for this are, germination indexing, purity, vitality (packaged seeds), along with sickness and diseases which can occur during the growth stages. Also consider that during planting there is the occurrence of the machines tires sliding and slipping, which is dependent of the local working conditions.
To obtain a harvest of 50,000 plants per hectares, with seed characteristics of : Germination Indexing of = 95% Purity = 90 Slippage Indexing of = 1.03 (3%) Use the following calculation process to establish the required amount of seeds to be distrib- uted per hectare.
11.1.1 - Planting depth The planting depth is one of the factors which upsets the germination and the emergence of the crop. Depth uniformity is done through the depth limiters which are mounted on the sides and di- rectly behind the seeding discs, thus allowing the tracing of the terrain’s irregularities. Each planting row has a depth limiting package which can be adjusted as follow: Raise the machine to relieve the weight placed on the depth limiters.
Page 89
Figure 60 When it receives an abrupt impact from a rock, root, or other obstacle, the shank package will disarm itself, and thus allowing the line to pass without any damages to it. Figure 61 After passing the obstacle, the shank will return to its original working position automatically, without having to do any repositioning to the unlatching mechanism.
Page 90
Figure 62 In extremely hard or compacted soils, there may be a need to raise the machine so that the shank latch can arm itself again. For the proper functioning of the latching shank packages, a periodic lubrication treatment should be administered to key points (B), do so to avoid premature ware and tare and poor system operation.
Figure 64 14- COMPACTING WHEEL When there is the need to raise the compacting wheel (A), in order to transport or whatever the case may be, remove pin “B” so that when wheel (A) is raised the spring ( C ) will not exceed its travel limits, which can lead to system to malfunction.
15- PNEUMATIC METERING 15.1 - Pneumatic system The Precision Seeding Distribution System (DPS) is compact and easy to clean. To assemble, disassemble, and or to have access to its main components, there is no need of tools. Figure 66 15.1.1 - Planting discs The DPS plants seeds of any format or size, needing no adjustments, and using only one disc per seed type.
15.1.4 - Vacuum system efficiency- It has a smaller vacuum chamber, in relationship to other conventional feeders. Sealed to a high standard of efficiency, thus fully optimizing the vacuum during seed suction and ejection, putting a lower load demand on the turbine, and consequently lowering the tractor`s diesel oil consumption.
The feeder is equipped with seed level adjustment. (Figure 75) Figure 75 15.1.5 - Basic cares Disc height calibration, is done using the spacer discs.(Figure 76) When replacing the ejector, make sure that the gasket lip does not remain under the ejector, which is shown improperly on (Figure 77) Figure 76 Figure 77...
15.1.7 - Sensor- The seed conductor is equipped with a state of the art sensor, which defines the seeding stream using capacitance waves, thus guaranteeing an accurate reading, this same signal defines the seeding density of what is currently being planted. The sensor is located at the end of the conductor tube, which may be presented as a weak spot as to when the seed actually reaches the ground.
16- USING POWDERED GRAPHITE- CAUTION: Some treated seeds can have a powder covering done commercially. It is important that the recommended graphite quantities be applied, besides what has already been applied to the seeds. NOTE: Some types of treatments have an oil base which will be sticky and will adhere to the equipment’s parts, which can affect of the planting rate and crop returns.
On pneumatic planting systems, the production of negative pressure or vacuum is done using a turbine. On Stara’s machines the turbine is mounted on the chassis of the machine. It is driven by a hydraulic motor which is hooked-up the package, as shown on the image to the side..
19- HYDRAULIC MOTOR- The hydraulic motors used on Stara’s machines have an output rate of 20 ltrs. When installing it, certain items should be considered as shown on the image below.
The air duct system is made up of planting duct lines, which are hooked-up to the main duct. Stara’s air duct system is linear, mounted on the machine’s chassis and secured by clamps. The main duct uses rigid tubing and flexible tubing in its lines.
Figure 86 24- ELECTRICAL SYSTEM- 24.1 - Variable Rate System- Through the variable rate system instant seed distribution adjustments can be done by the Topper 4500 controller. The variable rate system uses speed sensors (machine driving speeds), which are applied in adjusting the seed distribution rate, or be it, to increase the hydraulic motor`s rpm, which in turn drive the lines.
(Additional information can be found in the Quick ref. guide: GUIA-7310-FLS /QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE- FLEX MPS). The MPS system can function with STARA`S SEED SENSOR (OPTICAL), in machines equipped with mechanical distributions systems, or the DPS SEED SENSOR(CAPACITANCE) on machines with pneumatic systems, functional in both consoles mentioned above.
