Troubleshooting

Probable Cause
Bent propeller
Drive shaft installed improperly
Drive shaft has not been balanced
Engine output shaft and drive input shaft
are not parallel
Worn drive shaft universal joints
Inadequate stiffness for drive mounting
Engine mounting loose
Low on oil
Pump not operating
Filter clogged
Air leak in suction line
Suction hose collapsed
Obstruction jamming lower unit
Steering motor key on output shaft

Low oil level
Pump not operating
Oil leakage
Filter clogged
Pinched or obstructed oil line
Oil leakage
Propeller shaft seal damaged
Shear pin broken
Water leakage
Remedy
Straighten and balance propeller
Check that the universal joint forks are in the same plane
(bearing holes in the same direction)
Have drive shaft dynamically balanced
Adjust engine mount so that shafts are parallel
Check condition of universal joints
Stiffen hull mounting flange and hull bottom
Tighten engine mounts
Check tank oil level. Inspect for broken oil lines and loose fittings
Repair pump
Replace filter element
Check fittings and tighten where required
Replace suction hose
Remove obstruction
Remove motor and replace key
Add oil to maintain proper level
Repair pump as required
Inspect for broken oil lines and loose fittings
Replace filter element
Remove obstruction
Inspect oil lines and fittings
Inspect and replace propeller shaft seal if required
Replace shear pin
Inspect and replace propeller shaft seal
Tighten lower housing bolts
Inspect and replace vertical housing O-Ring seal
