The Mudd-Ox is capable of traveling to remote locations where emergency services are not readily available. These locations can range from desert to tundra climates. When traveling in the Mudd-Ox, always pack a survival kit suitable for all occupants in the vehicle. This includes but is not limited to: food, water, extra clothing, fuel, flashlight, portable heater, tent, flares, tools, spare parts, and spare tires mounted on rims.
Page 17
All Mudd-Ox operators and passengers must be aware of the wind chill factor. Always dress properly for the weather and cover exposed skin. Ensure young children are adequately dressed for cold temperatures. It is best to bring candles and blankets in case of emergency.
Using this switch without care could cause the vehicle start and immediately move depending on operator lever location. 10. Bilge Pump Switch: When in an emergency, if the Mudd-Ox has water in the lower body, quickly flip on the bilge pump switch. This will im- mediately begin to pump water out of the vehicle.

Instrument Panel Mudd-Ox GT/XL Cont. 11. Windshield Wiper Switch: Only applicable on Mudd-Ox’s equipped with a windshield wiper. There is both a High and Low setting. High moves the blade quickly, while Low moves it slower. Select setting based on weather conditions and visibility.
RPM, and the turtle for lower RPM. Full throttle will give you full power and torque. Half throttle will give you half power and torque, etc. The more you apply the throttle, the more power and speed you will be able to achieve. Note: It is not recommended to drive the Mudd-Ox...
Page 23
Control Levers You will use the control levers to change direction of the machine. There are two control levers on the Mudd-Ox. The left lever operates the left side wheels/track and the right lever operates the right side wheels/track. When you move the levers forward, the wheels/track will turn forward.
Page 24
Land Operation Land Load Capacity of the Mudd-Ox Make sure to observe the vehicle load limits on land (2,000 lbs.) less the weight of accessories, and distributed evenly. If the Mudd-Ox is overloaded, remove cargo as necessary. Vehicle Preparation Before operating the Mudd-Ox, complete the following vehicle preparation: •...
Page 25
Mud and Snow Always survey an area before driving the Mudd-Ox into unusual terrain. On soft grounds including but not limited to mud and snow, remain cautious about bottoming out the vehicle. This occurs when the Mudd-Ox tires or tracks are no longer touching the ground, and rather the machine is resting on the lower body.
Page 26
All occupants must unlatch their safety belts before entering water, remove DOT-certified helmets, and wear flotation devices. If the Mudd- Ox is equipped with an aluminum top, locate the exit hatch above the front seat and the side door handles. If the Mudd-Ox is equipped with a canvas top, unzip the doors and roll them up.
Page 27
Exiting Water Locate hard-packed shoreline at a 10 degree angle or less. Point the Mudd-Ox straight. Slowly and gently drive the vehicle out of the water. Too much throttle will cause the tires to dig into the shore, and not drive the vehicle out. If the vehicle begins to exit at an angle, reverse and point it straight again.
Winch Operation All Mudd-Ox’s come standard with a front winch and optional rear. It is important to understand the abilities and limits of your winch. For information of your exact winch and proper use of snatch block, refer to the manufacturer’s specifications and owner’s manual.
Page 29
8. It’s time to reel in the winch line. One person must grab onto the winch hook and gently pull it away from the Mudd-Ox. This keeps ten- sion on the line to wind it back in tight. Another person must operate the winch switch. As the winch begins to reel the line in, the person holding the hook must slowly “aim”...
Accessing the Mudd-Ox GT/XL The Mudd-Ox was designed with ease of maintenance in mind. We understand the need for quick and painless access to all compo- nents of the machine. Listed on the next few pages are detailed photographs displaying the key components to removing large parts.

Open engine compartment. Quickly removed parts without tools. Overview of the rear chassis. Hydraulic drivetrain under the operator’s seat.
Page 32
Before removing the engine cover, you must remove the two bottom seats locat- ed at the rear of the Mudd-Ox. Next, locate the two latches on top of the engine cover and remove them. Carefully lift the engine cover out of its track and pull...
Page 33
Drain Plugs Access Located at the rear of the Mudd-Ox, near the bottom of the lower body, are two drain plugs. One is installed per side of the machine. Twist the plugs to the left to loosen, right to tighten. Each plug is designed to unscrew from the lower body, and will dangle rather than pull completely out.
Page 34
Relay Pictured is a relay removed from its mount. Each relay has terminals extending from the bottom which dictate the direction it is installed on the Mudd-Ox. It will only install facing a certain direction. Fuse All individual fuses on the Mudd-Ox are place inside weatherproof caps. Remove the cap to gain access to the fuse.
Page 35
Fuse and Relay Location 1 Located directly behind the Mudd-Ox instrument panel are 2 fuses. One of these powers the USB ports, and the other a cigarette lighter. Alongside this are 3 re- lays. There are 2 relays in line with one another, these are for the neutral safety system.
Page 36
Located on the driver side engine right above the battery is a fuel shutoff valve (X). To use this feature, an individual must either rotate the valve towards the front of the Mudd-Ox and hold it, or use a zip-tie to secure the valve forward. When finished, return valve back to its normal position.
Page 37
Fuel Water Separator Located on the driver side engine, behind the battery, is a fuel water separator. This filter is used to prevent contaminated fuel from injecting into the engine. To remove water from the separator, loosen the nut at the bottom of the filter. Water will drain out.
Page 38
Coolant Fill Located on the driver side engine compartment near the exhaust is the cool- ant reservoir and overflow tank. The overflow tank has decals which show when coolant is either full or low, and needs to be filled. Also fill the coolant reservoir. See page 39.
12 psi with tracks All tires on the Mudd-Ox must have equal tire pressure to prevent the vehicle from pulling to one side. Before inflating tires, verify the valve stem, tire, and rim do not have any cracks or stress marks. Damaged components may be dangerous to occupants.
2. Set (2) long, heavy duty ratchet straps down in front of the Mudd-Ox. Spread them across the ground parallel to the vehicle. These will later be used to pull the ends of the tracks together.
3. If the master links are easily visible and the chains can be removed, move to step #7. If not, continue to step #4. 4. In order to freely move the Mudd-Ox, you must relieve the brakes on the (2) inline hydraulic pumps. This is a simple task. On the bottom of each pump there is (1) towing bolt, thus (2) total.
Page 42
Identifying a Blown Fuse In the event an electrical component on the Mudd-Ox is no longer working, it may be the result of a blown fuse or bad relay. As seen on the next page, locate the specific fuse controlling the component that is non-operational. On most occasions, it is possible to simply remove the fuse and identify if it is blown.
Page 43
If this is the case, fix immediately. Replace the corre- sponding fuse and reinstall battery. Note: When replacing wire, always maintain Mudd-Ox specifications. Do not change gauge of wire, install additional connectors, or change routing of wire.
Page 44
Engine Coolant Bleeding the System A brand new Mudd-Ox will not have a fully bleed cooling system. Meaning, there may be air bubbles that must be “driven” out of the system. 1. Drive the Mudd-Ox at operating temperature. 2. Let the engine completely cool down.
Page 45
This example will utilize the driver side front. 3. Safely raise the driver front side of the Mudd-Ox. You may raise just enough to lift the first axle off the ground, or both. It does not matter. 4. Now you can manually rotate the raised tires. They will not rotate more than a few degrees as the parking brake is engaged. Carefully look inside the Mudd-Ox as you manually rotate the tires.
Page 46
Chain Tensioning Chain Adjustment Steps 1. Complete steps #1-6 on page 40. 2. Locate all the chain tensioners as shown in the diagram on the next page. Although the rear tensioners (A) look different than the fronts (B) they adjust in a similar manner. For the (A) tensioners you will need a 3/4” wrench and (B) a 1-1/8 wrench. It is preferred to also have these re- spected sizes on a ratcheting socket for quick adjustment, although not necessary.
Page 48
“clunking” or “clicking” sound. These noises are a result of a worn chain. If the sprocket is also worn, see pages 61-63 for replacement. 1. First, park the Mudd-Ox on flat ground. Remove the floor board over the respected chain that needs replaced. Shown as “A” in Figure-1, there is a master link that holds the chain together.
Page 49
Chain Locations Below is a passenger side view of a Mudd-Ox chassis with yellow arrows. These display the chain’s direction of travel when the Mudd-Ox is driving forward. The top section of the chain moves towards the front of the vehicle, while the bottom section moves towards the back.
1. Safely raise the Mudd-Ox and remove all tires, floor boards, lower seats and engine cover. Next locate all bearings as shown in the diagram on the next page. Mudd-Ox GT/XL has 24 axle bearings. For each axle, there are 2 bearings outside the body and 1 inside. Total 3 bearings per axle (Figure-1).
Page 52
A. The control lever(s) have excessive slack in neutral position, and do not have linear engagement throughout the entire stroke. B. Ensure Mudd-Ox is shut off. Remove the lower operator seat and locate the z-bars (Figure-1). Move the right side control lever while looking at the front most z-bar.
Page 53
2. Remove operator lower seat. Locate the brake calipers. There are (2) per Mudd-Ox, one above each brake rotor (Figure-1). 3. Start with the driver side brake caliper. Towards the inside of the Mudd-Ox, there is a bolt with jam nut. Use an 11/16 wrench to loosen the jam nut.
Page 54
Follow the hose down and there will be a valve with a drain. 2. There are multiple ways to drain the engine oil. It is important to not remove the drain plug/open the drain valve and let oil into the Mudd-Ox body.
Page 55
At least (3) mechanics are recommended for these steps. Thoroughly read and understand the steps before attempting. 1. Remove lower operator seat and engine cover. Safely raise the Mudd-Ox with all tires off the ground. It must be high enough that the tires can drive forward and backwards without dragging the ground.
Page 56
Hydraulic Oil Change Cont. 9. Although the Mudd-Ox has new AW-46 oil in the tank and new oil filters, there is still old oil inside the hydraulic system past the tank. It’s time to run new oil through the system to push the old oil out via the return line. Locate the hydraulic oil return line. This is on top of the oil tank as shown in Figure-2, D.
Page 57
“tight” if the pumps have air. If there is air, do not attempt to drive against it. Work the control levers as in step #18. 20. Once the Mudd-Ox can be driven on flat ground in both directions without any air, attempt to drive on small grades both up and down. Also attempt to counter-rotate the Mudd-Ox by pushing the control levers in opposite directions.
Page 58
“Swamping” refers to the unfortunate event when a Mudd-Ox fills with water. This can be caused by improper use of the vehicle such as en- tering large bodies of water and water with current. If safely possible, shut off the Mudd-Ox before it fills with water. A running machine can be faced with fatal mechanical failure if submerged in water.
Page 59
Repairing a Swamped GT/XL Cont. 9. At this point the hydraulics, engine oil, engine coolant, and fuel system should be prepared. Now, complete steps #12-13 on page 51. Note: Water will most likely spray out of the injector holes. It is recommended to put cardboard next to the holes to prevent water from spraying inside the vehicle.
A total of (4) tie down straps are needed to adequately transport the Mudd-Ox. You will install one strap per each side. There are (2) ends to a strap, and will be notated as A and B. Simply connect A to a tie down point on the trailer, loop B around the Mudd-Ox bearing box, then connect it to the same tie down point as A (Figure-1).
