Control Levers You will use the control levers to change direction of the machine. There are two control levers on the Mudd-Ox. The left lever operates the left side wheels/track and the right lever operates the right side wheels/track. When you move the levers forward, the wheels/track will turn forward.
Land Operation Land Load Capacity of the Mudd-Ox Make sure to observe the vehicle load limits on land (2,000 lbs.) less the weight of accessories, and distributed evenly. If the Mudd-Ox is overloaded, remove cargo as necessary. Vehicle Preparation Before operating the Mudd-Ox, complete the following vehicle preparation: •...
Page 23
Mud and Snow Always survey an area before driving the Mudd-Ox into unusual terrain. On soft grounds including but not limited to mud and snow, remain cautious about bottoming out the vehicle. This occurs when the Mudd-Ox tracks are no longer touching the ground, and rather the ma- chine is resting on the lower body.
Page 24
All occupants must unlatch their safety belts before entering water, and wear flotation devices. If the Mudd-Ox is equipped with an alumi- num top, locate the exit hatch above the front seat and the side door handles. If the Mudd-Ox is equipped with a canvas top, unzip the doors and roll them up.
Page 25
Exiting Water Locate hard-packed shoreline at a 25 degree angle or less. Point the Mudd-Ox straight. Slowly and gently drive the vehicle out of the water. Too much throttle will cause the tires to dig into the shore, and not drive the vehicle out. If the vehicle begins to exit at an angle, reverse and point it straight again.
Page 26
Winch Operation All Mudd-Ox’s come standard with a front winch and optional rear. It is important to understand the abilities and limits of your winch. For information of your exact winch and proper use of snatch block, refer to the manufacturer’s specifications and owner’s manual.
Page 27
7. After the Mudd-Ox has been recovered: Set parking brake, remove weighted object, remove hook from strap, and remove strap from tree. 8. It’s time to reel in the winch line. One person must grab onto the winch hook and gently pull it away from the Mudd-Ox. This keeps tension on the line to wind it back in tight.
Accessing the Mudd-Ox Fort Mac The Mudd-Ox was designed with ease of maintenance in mind. We understand the need for quick and painless access to all compo- nents of the machine. Listed on the next few pages are detailed photographs displaying the key components to removing large parts.

Page 30
Bottom Seats Removal Three lower seats in the Mudd-Ox are held in by industrial Velcro. To remove these seats, simply pull up until the Velcro has separated, and remove them from the vehicle. Front Seat Back Removal Removing the operator seat back will provide access for maintenance on the Mudd-Ox.
Page 31
Drain Plugs Access Located at the rear of the Mudd-Ox, near the bottom of the lower body, are two drain plugs. One is installed per side of the machine. Twist the plugs to the left to loosen, right to tighten. Each plug is designed to unscrew from the lower body, and will dangle rather than pull completely out.
Page 32
On the passenger side of the Ford 85 HP engine is an oil filter (X). This is in front of the hydraulic oil tank inside the Mudd-Ox. See page 40 for oil change instructions. Ford Service Part Number: 1S7G-6714-DA Motorcraft: FL-910 Ford Air Filter The top of the engine has a large air K&N filter.
Page 33
Hydraulic Oil On both sides of the engine compartment is a large, silver cap for filling hydraulic oil. Verify the oil is full by looking at the clear sight glass mounted to the side of the tank. As noted on the warning label, hydraulic oil must be 1.5’’ from the top of the sight glass.
Page 34
Fuse All individual fuses on the Mudd-Ox are place inside weatherproof caps. Remove the cap to gain access to the fuse. At the top of each fuse is a number. This dic- tates the number of amps it is rated for. Always replace a fuse with the same...
Page 35
Relay Pictured is a relay removed from its mount. Each relay has terminals extending from the bottom which dictate the direction it is installed on the Mudd-Ox. It will only install facing a certain direction. Identifying a Blown Fuse Sometimes a blown fuse is visible to the human eye. Inside the fuse is a small, metal strand (X).
Track Installation 1. Set the tracks in front of the Mudd-Ox, completely flat with the tread pattern facing down. For Chevron tracks, set the “V” pattern crest pointing towards the back of the machine just as the tires do (Figure-2).
Towing 1. Remove lower operator seat. Locate the towing bolts underneath the pumps on the passenger side. They are in line with the main hydraulic drives on both pumps. There is (1) bolt per pump, thus (2) total (See Figure-1, 2). Loosen both towing bolts by turning 1 to 1-1/2 turns coun- terclockwise.
General Maintenance To ensure longevity of the Mudd-Ox, always perform the required maintenance as written throughout this manual. Basic maintenance is quick and simple. Taking the time to care for your Mudd-Ox will gain positive returns on quality of operation.
Page 39
A. The control lever(s) have excessive slack in neutral position, and do not have linear engagement throughout the entire stroke. B. Ensure the Mudd-Ox is shut off. Remove the lower operator seat and locate the z-bars (Figure-1). Move the right side control lever while looking at the frontmost z-bar.
Page 40
Bearing Maintenance Axle bearings require basic maintenance to keep both the bearing healthy and prevent premature replacement. This is achieved by greasing each individual bearing through its grease fitting. Grease bearings every 25 hours or after each use in water/mud, whichever comes first. Steps 1.
Page 41
Axle Bearing Locations X: Center axle bearing location on Mudd-Ox Fort Mac.
Page 42
Identifying a Blown Fuse In the event an electrical component on the Mudd-Ox is no longer working, it may be the result of a blown fuse or bad relay. As seen on the next page, locate the specific fuse controlling the component that is non-operational. On most occasions, it is possible to simply remove the fuse and identify if it is blown.
Page 43
If this is the case, fix immediately. Replace the corre- sponding fuse and reinstall battery. Note: When replacing wire, always maintain Mudd-Ox specifications. Do not change gauge of wire, install additional connectors, or change routing of wire.
Page 44
• Figure-2 “C” and “D” represent the (2) different locations of the diagnosis grounding systems. As explained in the Ford Service Manual, the di- agnostic system must be grounded to display an engine fault. Depending on the date of manufacturer, the Mudd-Ox Fort Mac will either have a toggle switch or empty fuse holder in these locations.
Page 45
Steps 1. Locate the engine oil drain plug. Standard location is on the engine driver side, middle of the oil pan sidewall. If the Mudd-Ox is equipped with a remote drain setup, there will be a hose connected to the drain hole. Follow the hose down and there will be a valve with a drain.
Page 46
Engine Coolant Bleeding the System A brand new Mudd-Ox will not have a fully bleed cooling system. Meaning, there may be air bubbles that must be “driven” out of the system. 1. Drive the Mudd-Ox at operating temperature. 2. Let the engine completely cool down.
Page 47
At least (4) mechanics are recommended for these steps. Thoroughly read and understand the steps before attempting. 1. Remove lower operator seat and engine cover. Safely raise the Mudd-Ox with both tracks off the ground. It must be high enough that the tracks can drive forward and backwards without dragging the ground.
Page 48
Hydraulic Oil Change Cont. 9. Although the Mudd-Ox has new AW-46 oil in the tanks and new oil filters, there is still old oil inside the hydraulic system past the tanks. It’s time to run new oil through the system to push the old oil out via the return lines. Locate the hydraulic oil return lines. These are on top of both oil tanks as shown in Figure-2, C.
Page 49
“tight” if the pumps have air. If there is air, do not attempt to drive against it. Work the control levers as in step #18. 20. Once the Mudd-Ox can be driven on flat ground in both directions without any air, attempt to drive on small grades both up and down. Also attempt to counter-rotate the Mudd-Ox by pushing the control levers in opposite directions.
Page 50
“Swamping” refers to the unfortunate event when a Mudd-Ox fills with water. This can be caused by improper use of the vehicle such as en- tering large bodies of water and water with current. If safely possible, shut off the Mudd-Ox before it fills with water. A running machine can be faced with fatal mechanical failure if submerged in water.
Page 51
Repairing a Swamped Fort Mac Cont. 9. At this point the hydraulics, engine oil, engine coolant, and fuel system should be prepared. Now, complete steps #12-13 on page 43. Note: Water will most likely spray out of the spark plug holes. It is recommended to put cardboard next to the holes to prevent water from spraying inside the vehicle.
5. Completely drain fuel or add fuel stabilizer (See page 45 #7-8). 6. The next step is to remove weight off the tires. Carefully raise the Mudd-Ox. Place large wooden blocks under each side of the lower body (See Figure-1). This is to support the Mudd-Ox by its frame.
