  • Page 4 Welcome Thank you for choosing the PRO-12 Klangbox. We hope you will have as much fun with your PRO-12 as we did when developing this unique and characterful synthesizer. Please read this manual thoroughly in order to take full advantage of the many features the PRO-12 has to offer.
  • Page 5 Getting started Making Connections Connecting the power adaptor To connect your Klangbox to a mains supply, please use the power adaptor supplied with the unit. First connect the power adaptor to your Klangbox. Before plugging the adaptor's plug into a mains socket, make sure it is compatible with the mains voltage in your country.
  • Page 6 Installation of the Remote Software To install the Remote Software supplied with the Klangbox on your PC, please put the CD-ROM labelled 'Klangbox into the CD-R drive of your computer find and doubleclick “Pro-12 Klangbox 3.3K.exe” in the Pro-12 folder.
  • Page 7 'Installation path' drop-down menu. If you don’t set a dedicated path here, the Remote Software will be installed to e.g. “C:\Programs\Creamware\Pro-12 3.3K”. Installation requires 8 MB of empty hard disk space. The 'Choose Start Menu Folder' lets you choose your own directory.
  • Page 8 Remote Software General To control your Klangbox with the Remote Software, you have to connect the Klangbox to a computer via USB or MIDI. Panel Layout The Remote Software has three pages for sound control: the 'Main' page, the 'Add' page contains additional parameters as aftertouch and modulation wheel settings.
  • Page 9 MAIN Page Oscillator A&B Apart from a few small differences, oscillators A & B are largely identical. Both have sawtooth and pulse wave- forms, and oscillator B has an additio- nal triangle wave. Each oscillator wa- veform has its own dedicated on/off button and all of them can be active at the same time, which allows a mix of up to five waveforms in parallel.
  • Page 10 Coarse Use this to set the oscillator frequency. The range can be adjusted over 6 octaves. Fine Use this knob to detune the oscillators with respect to one another. Detuning and then mixing two oscillators produces vibrations that result in a more lively sound. The range can be adjusted over approximately one octave.
  • Page 11 LFO and the two sources in the 'Poly Mod' modulation matrix (see below). Cutoff FiIlter 'cutoff frequency' is the frequency above which the PRO-12 ASB's tonal spectrum is filtered and its overtones are reduced in volume. You can adjust the cutoff frequency manually.
  • Page 12 Envelope Amount: This controls the intensity of the filter's envelope curve. When the knob is turned up the filter envelope curve acts on the filter cutoff, causing its frequency to change over time and producing a mobile timbre. The cutoff frequency returns to normal at the end point of the envelope curve.
  • Page 13 The amplifier's ADSR (attack / decay / sustain / release) envelope curve determines how the volume of a sound changes over time. The PRO-12 master volume control is part of the amplifier section. Attack Determines the duration of the initial 'attack' phase of the ADSR envelope curve.
  • Page 14 Options for Amp- and Filter Envelope Pressing this button automatically sets the sustain to zero. This is a good way to switch rapidly between a sustaining and a percussive sound without having to change the sustain level each time. ('ADR' is another feature not available on the original 1978 synth.) Release This button determines whether 'release' is on or off.
  • Page 15 The LFO (low frequency oscillator) of your PRO-12 features the same three waveforms used by oscillator B - sawtooth, triangle and pulse. Choose a waveform simply by pushing one of the three LED push buttons; you can turn them on individually, all at the same time or in any combination you like, which can lead to very interesting results.
  • Page 16 The modulation wheel controls the intensity of the 'wheel buss' LFO modulation. In the origi¬nal synthesizer, this was the only way to control the wheel buss, but the PRO-12 has more advanced opti- ons, including additional controls for overall modulation intensity and modulation offset.
  • Page 17 Poly Mod In this section you can set the depth (intensity) of the modulation sources (filter envelope and oscillator B) and select single or multi- ple modulation destinations. Source Amount Filter Env This knob sets the modulation strength of the filter envelope for all selected destinations.

  • Page 19 ADD Page Additional Features Bend Range This is where you set the maximum detuning via pitch bend in half tones. The value range covers 0 to 24 semitones. Modulation Intensity The maximum intensity of the engageable oscillation and filter mo- dulations that can be set via the modulation wheel.
  • Page 20 Aftertouch The original 1978 synthesizer did not have aftertouch facilities, so the PRO-12 aftertouch function has been modelled on that of the later Prophet™ T8. However, unlike the T8, the PRO-12 aftertouch works globally (this is called 'channel aftertouch') rather than poly- phonically ('key aftertouch').
  • Page 21 Filter Controls the amount of aftertouch applied to the filter cutoff - this allows aftertouch to be used to create filter sweeps. Controls the amount of aftertouch applied to output volume. MW Amt Controls the amount of aftertouch applied to the 'wheel buss' (LFO) modulation.
  • Page 22 MIDI Clock This knob controls the tempo of the the PRO-12 internal MIDI clock in BPM. LFO Settings Retrig This control toggles between the the LFO's two modes. In 'free run' mode, the LFO cy- cles freely and independently; in 'retrigger' mode the LFO is restarted / retriggered whe- never a note is played.
  • Page 23 Wheel MOD MW Intensity This sets the maximum intensity the 'wheel buss' modulation can reach when the modulation wheel is pushed all the way up. MW Offset You can use this control to add built-in modulation to a patch, which saves having to push up the modulation wheel every time! If a patch uses the MW offset, you can still use the mod wheel to add more modulation.
  • Page 24 EFFECTS (Chorus/Delay) The 'Add' page contains also controls for the chorus / flan- ger and stereo delay effects built into your Klangbox. Chorus / Flanger Flanger This switch toggles between the chorus and flanger effects. Rate Controls the speed of the chorus / flanger modulation. Depth Sets the intensity of the modulation.
  • Page 25 BPM R Click here to set the right channel delay to a musical note length. Cross Controls the amount of left channel delay feedback signal sent to the right channel. Time (left / right) Adjusts the time of the delay from 1 to 1365 milliseconds (= 1.365 seconds).
  • Page 26 PREFS PAGE The 'Prefs' page is used to edit the Klangbox system settings. MIDI In / Out Device (in / out) Use these windows to select the MIDI device (and port) you use for con- necting the Klangbox MIDI in and out to your computer.
  • Page 27 Firmware Update This facility enables you to download software updates for your Klangbox operating system when they become available. Activation Key Enter the activation key code of your Klangbox here. DSP Software Displays the current DSP software, which is responsable for the sound of your Klangbox.
  • Page 28 Bank There are two internal preset banks in Klangbox and each contains 128 presets. The first bank is named „Factory Bank“ (F) and the second „User Bank“ (U). They can also be addressed via MIDI bank select. Preset By clicking on the arrow keys you can step through the internal presets of the selected preset bank.
  • Page 29 MIDI KEYBOARD The Remote Software's built-in MIDI keyboard enables you to play the Klangbox without using an external keyboard or sequencer software - you can play the synthesizer with the computer mouse. Turn on the MIDI keyboard by clicking on its switch of the Remote Software's display.
  • Page 30 PRESET ADMINISTRATION The Remote Software always displays the currently active preset's name at the top right of its panel. Use the forward / back arrows to the left of the preset name to step through the presets. When it comes to more advanced preset management, the Remote Software's integrated preset administration section is an easy and convenient way of storing, exchanging and editing your presets.
  • Page 31 Storing, deletion and changing of Presets To store a single preset in a bank, please create a new entry by selecting 'create preset' from the drop- down menu. The preset will be added to the bottom of the preset list with the name 'New Preset' - right click on the name to rename it.

Bitte lesen Sie diese Bedie- nungsanleitung aufmerksam durch, um alle Funktionen des PRO- 12 kennen zu lernen und nutzen zu können.

    Erste Schritte Anschluss des Netzteils Um die Klangbox mit Netzspannung zu versorgen, stecken Sie bitte das beiliegende Netzteil in die Steckdose. Verbinden Sie dann das Netzteil mit der Netzbuchse Ihres Gerätes. Bitte achten Sie vor dem ersten Gebrauch auf die Kompatibilität des Netzteils zu Ihrem Stromnetz.

    Installation der Remote-Software Um die Remote-Software zu installieren, legen Sie bitte die CD mit der Aufschrift Klangbox in das CD-Laufwerk Ihres Computers. Öff- nen Sie den Ordner „Pro-12“ und starten sie bitte die Anwendung “Pro-12 Klang- box 3.3K.exe” manuell mittels Doppelklick von der CD.

    Das Aufrufen der Presets Die Nummer des gewählten internen Presets der Klangbox kann einfach über ein externes Keyboard oder eine ein angeschlossenes Programm mit MIDI Bank Select und MIDI Program Change geändert werden. Program Change Bank 0 selektiert die erste Bank (Factory Bank) udn Bank 1 adressiert die zweite interne Bank (User Bank).

    MAIN Page Die Oszillatoren A&B gleichen sich bis auf wenige Unterschiede. Per Schal- ter am jeweiligen Oszillator können verschiedene Wellenformen hinzuge- schaltet werden. Bei Oszillator A sind dies die Wellenformen Sägezahn und Pulse, bei Oszillator B sind es Sägezahn, Triangle und Pulse. Die Wellenformen können gleich- zeitig aktiv sein, wodurch eine Mischung von fünf Oszillatorwellen- formen möglich ist.
  • Page 45 Pulse Width Stellen Sie hier die Pulsweite des Oszillators manuell ein. Um das Ergebnis ihrer Einstellung zu hören, muss die Pulswellenform ein- geschaltet sein. Der Regelbereich erstreckt sich von ca. 5% bis 100% der Pulsweite. Ebenso besteht die Möglichkeit zur Pulsweitenmodulation, wobei dies im Abschnitt Modulation beschrieben ist.

    Audio Mixer Hier werden die Signale gemischt, bevor sie in das Filter eingespeist werden. Oszillator A und Oszillator B haben je einen eigenen Lautstärke- regler, ein weiterer Regler steuert die Lautstärke des Noise Signals, bei dem es sich um weisses Rauschen handelt.

    Resonance Hier stellen Sie die Resonanz-Parameter ein. Resonanz entsteht durch Rückkopplung des Filterausgangs mit dem Filtereingang, dabei werden die Frequenzen um die Cutoff Frequenz verstärkt. Bei voller Resonanz schwingt das Filter in Eigenresonanz und er- zeugt einen Sinuston mit der eingestellten Cutoff Frequenz. Das Filter gilt deshalb auch als sechste Soundquelle.
  • Page 48 Decay Dauer des zweiten Hüllkurvensegments. In der Decay-Phase fällt die Hüllkurve mit der eingestellten Zeit auf den unter Sustain einge- stellten Wert zurück. Sustain Wert, auf dem die Hüllkurve nach dem Decay verweilt. Release In der Release-Phase fährt die Hüllkurve mit der einge- stellten Zeit zurück auf ihr Minimum.

    LFO (Low Frequency Oszillator) Der LFO des PRO-12 bietet drei Wellenformen, welche die glei- chen wie bei Oszillator B sind. Die Wahl der Wellenformen findet auch hier über drei Schalter statt. Es können alle drei Wellenfor- men, oder eine beliebige Kombination davon, gleichzeitig aktiv sein, was zu interessanten Ergebnissen führt.

    Modulation Der PRO-12 hat drei Modulationsquellen - Filter Envelope, Oszilla- tor B und LFO - die mit bis zu fünf Zielen (Frequency Oszillator A, Pulsweite Oszillator A, Frequency Oszillator B, Pulsweite Oszillator B und Filter Cutoff) verknüpft werden können.     ADD PAGE Additional Features Keyboard Mode Retrig/Normal Bestimmen Sie hier das Triggerverhalten der Hüllkurven. Im Modus Normal wer- den beim Stehlen von Stimmen die Hüll- kurven nicht von neuem gestartet. Ein Legatospiel, ohne das die Hüllkurve mit jeder Note getriggert wird, ist somit mög- lich.

    EFFECTS (Chorus/Delay) Die Effect-Page beinhaltet Bedienelemente für den ein- gebauten Chorus/Flanger und für den Delay-Effekt Ih- rer Klangbox. CHORUS/FLANGER Chorus/Flanger Wählen Sie hier zwischen Chorus und Flanger Algorithmus. Rate regelt den Wert Modulationsgeschwindigkeit. Depth Hier können Sie die Intensität der Modulation einstellen. Phase Stellen sie hier die Phase der Modulation ein.
  • Page 59 Feedback regelt den Anteil an Rückkopplung im Delayweg. In der Praxis wirkt sich dieser Parameter auf die Anzahl an Echos aus. Damp Hier wird die Intensität der Höhendämpfung eingestellt. Level Level regelt die Lautstärke unabhängig für den linken und rechten Kanal.

    PREFS PAGE Hier ändern Sie Systemeinstellungen der Klangbox. MIDI In/Out Device Wählen Sie hier den Ein- bzw. Aus- gangsport, an dem Ihr ASB ange- schlossen ist. Für diese Verbindung kann ein MIDI-Port Ihres Rechners, oder die USB-Verbindung verwendet werden. Hardware Info In dieser Sektion werden Informatio- nen zu Ihrer Klangbox angezeigt.

    MIDI KEYBOARD Das MIDI-Keyboard ermöglicht es Ihnen, auch ohne Sequencer oder Keyboard Klänge der Klangbox mit der Maus zu spielen. Sie erreichen MIDI-Keyboard und MIDI-Monitor über den entspre- chenden Button der Remote Software. Channel Hier wird der MIDI-Kanal eingestellt, auf dem gesendet werden soll. Octave stellt den spielbaren Notenbereich in Oktavschritten ein.

    Presetverwaltung Die Presetverwaltung der Remote-Software ermöglicht das Spei- chern, Austauschen und Editieren von eigenen Presets. Open Presetlist Öffnet die Presetliste. Open File Öffnet ein Preset-File. Sie können die Presetliste als Datei speichern, um sie mit anderen Usern auszutauschen oder um Sicherungskopien anzu- fertigen.
