RTE6701-OEM Passport Reader Module Overview The 3M RTE6701-OEM Passport Reader Module is a compact, integrated unit designed to capture data from a variety of travel documents using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology. See Figure 1. Figure 1 – RTE6701-OEM Passport Reader Module The module consists of an optical decode PCB (known as the VC27U) and an optical read head (or camera).
No moving parts hence virtually maintenance free • Simple USB1.1 connectivity • Programmable configuration and protocols which may be downloaded from the host • Designed to be built into self-service terminals and keyboards Page 9 of 39 RTE6701-OEM Integration Manual VC27U V1.03 DRAFT.doc...
Installing the 3M RTE6700 Family Resource Kit The resource kit is available from our ftp site, contact your 3M sales representative or a support centre (details in Section 1.9 above) for the details, latest version and passwords. The resource kit is has an executable to install it, run setup.exe to start the process.
Installation is recommended on a machine running Windows® 2000 SP4, XP SP1, Vista® or Windows® 7 but should also work under Windows® 98. Note that currently only 32 bit versions are supported. Contact 3M technical support if you want to work with a 64 bit operating system.

My Computer, select Properties. Go to the Hardware Tab and click Device Manager. Open the LPT and COM section. This gives you the COM port number (in the example it is 13). Page 12 of 39 RTE6701-OEM Integration Manual VC27U V1.03 DRAFT.doc...
As this is an OEM product it is expected that you would manufacture items 3 to 5 once in full production of your product, however 3M can supply you these if required. First ensure you have all the necessary components above (all items 1 to 5).

By default the serial port is set to 19200 baud, 7 data bits, even parity and 1 stop bit. This may be changed using the jumper block J6 depending on the protocol installed. Page 14 of 39 RTE6701-OEM Integration Manual VC27U V1.03 DRAFT.doc...
HyperTerminal or a similar terminal emulator if you do not have a test program. A number of test programs are installed in the resource kit under: C:\Program Files\RTE\RTE 6700 Resource Kit\Development\Examples Page 15 of 39 RTE6701-OEM Integration Manual VC27U V1.03 DRAFT.doc...
(towards the bottom of the read guide). A shielded version of this cable is available under 3M RT part number 59-1064-01. See Section 7.3 and Appendix C – Read Head Cable for more information.

OEM Integration In order to integrate the 3M RTE6701-OEM Passport Reader Module into your equipment you need to consider a number of design issues and ensure that your manufacturing process is appropriate. This section helps you through some of these questions.
The read head is supplied with a non-polarised pin header to minimise the connector footprint. If your mechanical assembly has sufficient space, the read head can be supplied (on request to 3M and at additional cost) with a polarising shroud. This then allows the use of a cable with polarised connectors to prevent incorrect connection to the VC27U OEM board.
The glass must be made from an optically pure good quality product with approximately 90% transmission across 5 mm at 900nm. 3M uses Pilkington's Optiwhite (code FG2) although there are similar products from other manufacturers. 3M RT can provide the detailed specification for this glass if required.
The header contains information regarding the block and allows the data to be associated with specific devices within the 3M RTE6701-OEM. The general format of the header is as follows: [header information] = [length word][device byte][type byte] [length word] : a 14 significant bit word in [low byte][high byte] format with a value equal to the number of bytes (including checksum) following the [length word].
<SOH>[length]"OU"<STX>[flag][optical data]<ETX>[BCC] The 3M RTE6701-OEM is capable of reading three lines of data with the first line being the highest on the document. The [optical data] field consists of 3 lines separated by the <CR> character. The general format for [optical data] is: [line 1]<CR>[line 2]<CR>[line 3]<CR>...
0-9, A-Z, < 9.1.4 Jumper Settings (connector J6) The communications parameters are set by jumpers 1 and 2: 9600, 8N 9600, 7E 19200, 8N 19200, 7E Jumper 1 Jumper 2 Page 27 of 39 RTE6701-OEM Integration Manual VC27U V1.03 DRAFT.doc...

So standard shipping is Jumpers 1, 2, 4, 6 and 7 ON = 19200 baud, 7 data bits and even parity, as shown below. All other links should be left off except for jumpers 6 and 7 which must be on. Page 28 of 39 RTE6701-OEM Integration Manual VC27U V1.03 DRAFT.doc...
Flag Byte The flag byte shall always be transmitted and have one of the values defined below: "0" normal flag Other values for this flag may be added in the future. Page 29 of 39 RTE6701-OEM Integration Manual VC27U V1.03 DRAFT.doc...
Debug mode may be enabled by placing a link on jumper 5 (useful for a quick functional test as it sends a power up message). All other links should be left off except for jumpers 2 and 3 which must be on. Page 30 of 39 RTE6701-OEM Integration Manual VC27U V1.03 DRAFT.doc...
Generally the default protocol is sufficient for your application however occasionally updates and / or a different protocol (e.g. SITA CUTE or ARINC MUSE) may be required. 3M will provide a zip file which includes the download tools, instructions and firmware hex file.

USB serial ports then start the downloader using rx -d nn↵ where nn is the COM port number. For instance in the above example use rx -d 13↵ After a few seconds a menu should appear. Page 32 of 39 RTE6701-OEM Integration Manual VC27U V1.03 DRAFT.doc...

If you want to double check use option 1 and check the partition contents have changed. Remove the power (or USB cable) from the reader. Change the jumpers back to what they were before or as required for the new firmware. Page 33 of 39 RTE6701-OEM Integration Manual VC27U V1.03 DRAFT.doc...
Use option 10 or 11 to enter program download mode. Check download mode is entered using option 1. Use option 12 to change both baud rates to 19200. Continue from point 8 in section 10.3 above. Page 34 of 39 RTE6701-OEM Integration Manual VC27U V1.03 DRAFT.doc...
3M generally supplies an unshielded ribbon cable which is used in many of 3M's products but can also supply a shielded ribbon cable which is earthed at the PCB end. If radiation is suspected on this cable a shield can be fabricated from EMC foil and experiments should be made with earthing at one or both ends.

Generally there is not a problem with immunity however care is required to ensure that ESD to the document read slot is conducted away from the read head. Page 36 of 39 RTE6701-OEM Integration Manual VC27U V1.03 DRAFT.doc...
