General This section provides theory of operation of the IN 1502H Radar Indicator on three levels: overall operation within the RDR-1500B Radar System, block diagram operation of the indicator and detailed theory of operation.

    COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL IN 1502H RADAR INDICATOR The indicator receives its operating power from the aircraft 28-volt dc bus. Inputs to the indicator from the interface unit include the red, green and blue video, which are TTL inputs used to drive the CRT color guns; and the X-retrace and Y-retrace signals, which are also TTL signals, used to trigger the horizontal and vertical sweep circuits that develop the sweep signals for the CRT deflection yolks.

Total time for each line, including X-retrace, is therefore about 64 microseconds. The vertical scan time for each field is about 16.38 milliseconds (256 x 64 microseconds).

    COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL IN 1502H RADAR INDICATOR Since the field sync (Y-retrace) pulses must start halfway through the 313th line in the 625-line system, half-line pulses must be provided to the indicator for synchronization. The field sync pulse for the CCIR system consists of five broad half-line pulses. It must be inserted following lines 312 1/2 and 625.
  • Page 22 COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL IN 1502H RADAR INDICATOR However, before the on/off circuit can switch on the interface unit power supply, it must receive a +5 Vdc input from the interface unit power supply. Thus, when composite video is not selected for display, the indicator can not be turned on until the interface unit is operating.
  • Page 23 COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL IN 1502H RADAR INDICATOR The degaussing circuit generates a decaying magnetic field around the picture tube at 2-second to 3-second intervals when the indicator is on. The circuit includes a capacitor which is charged to a predetermined level by +250 volts from the horizontal sweep circuit on the sweep module.

    COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL IN 1502H RADAR INDICATOR The Y-retrace signal (YRET) is produced by simply using the field sync output of the V sync detector to trigger a one-shot multivibrator. The duration of this output pulse is fixed at 1800 microseconds. This signal is also multiplexed to the sweep module where it is used by the pincushion and vertical sweep circuits when composite video is selected.
  • Page 25 COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL IN 1502H RADAR INDICATOR Horizontal retrace time is controlled by a built-in timing circuit and is independent of the X-retrace signal which initiates retrace. The X-retrace signal is also forwarded to the high voltage power supply to control its pulse-width modulation control frequency. An input to the horizontal size circuit from the pincushion correction circuit is triggered by the Y-retrace signal.

    COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL IN 1502H RADAR INDICATOR The sawtooth is terminated by the leading edge of the Y-retrace pulse and the sawtooth for the next vertical sweep is triggered by the trailing edge of the Y-retrace pulse. During trace time, the circuit operates from +/-12 volts. During retrace, the +52 volt supply is used to allow the beam to retrace in the allocated time.

The +28-volt input is filtered and applied to output drivers, which are modulated by an oscillator circuit.

    COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL IN 1502H RADAR INDICATOR 4. Detailed Theory of Operation A. Video/RS-170 Module, P/N 8057175-0503 and -0504 (See Figure 6-12.) The video/RS-170 module contains the indicator on/off circuit, high-speed line receivers for the TTL inputs from the interface unit, video amplifiers, the degaussing circuit, brightness circuit, composite video enable circuit and composite video processing circuitry.

The composite video signal from the video amplifier (Q1021/Q1022) now is routed through the relay to the green gun (KG) of the CRT. The +5 volts now present at pin 9 of K1001 is routed to the composite video processing circuits as ENABLE and is inverted by U1008B to produce a signal (EN) that is routed to the sweep module.

In such a case, the red output would float toward +65 volts (-0501) or +53 volts (-0503, -0504) through R1035 and R1036, keeping the gun off. MOSFET Q1008 switches to +65 volts (-0501) or +53 volts (-0503, -0504) to turn off the red gun.

    COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL IN 1502H RADAR INDICATOR brightness circuit is the brightness (BRT) control mounted on the front panel of the indicator. The brightness circuit operates from -160 volts developed at the sweep module. An additional input (EN) is provided from the composite video enable circuit to turn brightness control over to the composite video circuits when enabled.
  • Page 35 COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL IN 1502H RADAR INDICATOR (b) DC Restorer The amplified video output from U1001 is coupled through C1047 and R1084 to the input pin 6 of multiplier U1011. The average level of the video signal varies as the picture goes from bright to dark. These DC variations are lost when the signal is passed through the RC coupling to the multiplier.
  • Page 36 COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL IN 1502H RADAR INDICATOR The positive supply voltage (+5V) for U1011 is connected to +VS pin 4 and the negative supply voltage (-5V) is connected to -VS pin 5. These two voltages are applied across a band-gap reference circuit internal to U1011 to provide a stable reference current for the device.

The video signal is grounded during the back porch to set the black level via U1012B. The vertical sync signal is a series of pulses approximately 2.5 (CCIR) or 3 (RS-170) horizontal lines in duration and occurring at the field repetition rate.

    COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL IN 1502H RADAR INDICATOR (f) RS-170/CCIR Horizontal Position Circuit A horizontal position circuit on the video/RS-170 module for both RS-170 and CCIR video operates in conjunction with separate RS-170 and CCIR horizontal position circuits on-board the sweep module. Together, these circuits are adjusted to delay the X-retrace pulse as necessary to ensure that the horizontal sweep does not begin before video is available.

Since its positive input is biased at +2.25 volts, the U2007B output is low between XRET pulses. Therefore, Q2013 is turned off and MOSFET Q2010 is kept off by the -5 volts on its gate.

The beginning of the sweep is not related to the trailing edge of the delayed X-retrace signal, but rather to the time required for the resonant circuit to go through one-half cycle of oscillation. At the conclusion of the delayed X-retrace pulse, Q2010 is switched off, and Q2006 and Q2007 switch on to provide a path for the reverse current through the yoke during the second half of the sweep.

    COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL IN 1502H RADAR INDICATOR The pincushion correction output from U2004A is also routed to the vertical circuit where a portion of the correction voltage is used to compensate for non-linearities in the vertical yoke. (5) Vertical Sweep Circuit The vertical sweep circuit is simpler than the horizontal sweep circuit because it operates at a much lower frequency.

Capacitor C2032 charges through CR2015, which peak detects the 250 to 285 volts. The -160 volt output for the brightness circuit is obtained from the negative side of C2032.

    COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL IN 1502H RADAR INDICATOR When Q4002 is off, the filtered +28 volt input is applied across the MOSFET. When Q4002 conducts, the voltage is applied across the primary of T4501. The amount of time Q4002 is allowed to conduct is controlled by the output from U4001. The longer Q4002 conducts, the more current is applied across the primary of T4501.

When it does, C4013 discharges, applying +5 volts to the dead time input of U4001. After C4013 has discharged, the soft start cycle is repeated.
  • Page 45 COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL IN 1502H RADAR INDICATOR The on/off circuit keeps the low voltage power supply deenergized as long as the radar system is turned off. When the radar system is turned on, this circuit also provides undervoltage shutdown of the LVPS in the event that the aircraft DC supply voltage (28 volts) becomes too low.

External resistance R5033 and capacitance C5010 have been selected to provide an operating frequency range of 5 to 38 KHz. Frequency is controlled by the voltage to the voltage sensitive input at pin 13.

The centertaps of each transformer receive +12 volts via Q5008 when the LVPS is on. Thus, when Q5005 conducts, a positive voltage is induced at the base of Q5001 and also on the base of Q5004.

It can be seen from the figure that Q5001 and Q5004 produce the positive current waveform when triggered by Q5005; and Q5002 and Q5003 produce the negative waveform when triggered by Q5006.

In typical operation the output of current limiter U5002B is around 11 volts, while voltage regulator U5002C controls frequency with an output of about 2.5 volts.
