The Chimney Top Damper combines a heavy gauge stainless steel damper with a length of RIS
chimney. When you latch the damper closed (pull it down) it will virtually eliminate the flow of warm air
up the chimney, as well as prevent cold air from entering from outside. The damper is counter-balanced
and will open by itself when you un-latch the damper chain. Unlike most dampers, the Chimney Top
Damper sits at the top of the chimney system just below the cap to maximize its effectiveness.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT CLOSE THE DAMPER WHILE THE FIREPLACE IS BURNING AS IT WILL
CAUSE SMOKE TO SPILL OUT OF THE FIREPLACE INTO THE HOME. THIS CAN CAUSE
SERIOUS SMOKE DAMAGE TO THE HOME AND EXPOSE YOU TO DANGEROUS GASES.

INSTALLATION

1. Install the Chimney top damper just like you would an additional length of chimney, and place it
directly below the cap. Take into account that the Chimney Top Damper adds one foot of chimney
height to the overall height of the system. Ensure that the cable is hanging down the system in a
position that will not hinder its movement.
2. There are two chain brackets included with the Chimney Top Damper. One is specific to installation
in the Renaissance Rumford fireplace, and the other is universal for masonry fireplaces.
a. If you are installing the Chimney Top Damper onto the Renaissance Rumford Fireplace you will
use the chain anchor bracket shown in Figure 1. To install the bracket simply center it along the
opening and use the three stainless steel screws provided to secure it to the metal ledge along
the top of the fireplace opening (see Figure 2).
b. If you are installing the Chimney Top Damper into a masonry fireplace, you will need to mount
the masonry anchor bracket (refer to Figure 3) to the inside wall of the firebox. Install the anchor
bracket in a convenient place: close to the fireplace opening, preferably a location that will not
get too hot.
3. Using the wire fastener provided, adjust the wire length to ensure that the chain locks firmly into the
slot in the bracket when you close the damper.
