Gauging and Holding Keys JAW A JAW B Vise jaw A is used for all standard keys with the deepest cut no less than .142 inches. Jaw B is used for small keys that use cuts of such great depth that a lip on the jaw is provided to hold the key closer to the cutter.

Using carriage handle, gently engage key into cutter and then release the handle. Begin to cut the key blank from the tip to the shoulder by moving the lever to the right - the carriage spring will provide all the tension necessary. Continue cutting to the shoulder then back toward the tip.

If the preceding steps indicate the machine needs calibration, simply loosen the set screw. With machine off, turn the depth adjustment knob while rotating the cutter with your other hand until the cutter just barely begins to scrape the key blank.

When the machine is in calibration, tighten the set screw. Remove the key blank from the tracer side. Load an original key on the tracer side. Cut a duplicate key. Trace-A-Key ®...

NOTE: If duplicate key turns “tight,” adjust the tracer slightly inward for a deeper cut. If duplicate key “clicks,” adjust the tracer slightly outward for a shallower cut. For exact verification, use a Micometer (such as the HPC Ultimate Micrometer, No. SKM-2D) to measure the depths of each cut. Compare these measurements to the lock manufacturer’s depths.
