Introduction • This guide gives an overview of the Sencon data logging system, information about using the system and what to do if you have a problem. • This guide does not explain in detail how to use the Hexagon software program.
Setting up your system Running Hexagon software To run Hexagon, double click on the Hexagon program icon in the Windows Program Manager. Double click Operating mode Note that you can use the Hexagon program in either of two modes: Operator mode - in which you can set up and download the logger but cannot change the way the Hexagon program works.
Controlling the logger Connect the logger to the SmartReader and connect the SmartReader to the selected communications port on your PC. SmartReader's 9 way D-type connector attaches to the back of the PC SmartReader's 19-way multi-way connector plugs into the socket on the logger.
Sending a set of logging instructions to the logger Select Activate Logger. In Operator mode, you will see the settings which will be sent to the logger but you will not be able to make changes. If you are in Administrator mode, you can change the settings before sending them to the logger.
Downloading logged information from the logger Select Get Data to download all the data from the logger and store it on disk as a data file. Note: the Get Data button will only be available if there is data in the logger. Hexagon displays the File Information Dialog box into which you can enter information about the file you are going to download.
Logger Guarantee The Sencon logger is guaranteed for one year against faulty parts and workmanship. Care of your logger We recommend that you change the logger batteries at least once a year. Do not immerse the logger in liquid. PLEASE NOTE: The logger is of rugged design and construction but excessive shock may damage the internal electronics.
Before replacing the logger battery, read the safety information at the front of this Guide. The logger requires a 7.4 volt Lithium cell, available from Sencon. Order Ref: SL2061 (single battery). Unclip the battery cover to remove the battery connector. Clip on the new battery and place it inside the logger.

Replacing the SmartReader battery If the red light next to '9V battery low' lights, you should change the SmartReader battery the next time you use the system. Note: This light will only be seen when the SmartReader is in communications mode. The SmartReader is powered by a 9V alkaline battery.
Troubleshooting If you have any of the following problems, try the suggested actions (in order) until the problem is solved. If this does not help, or if you have a problem not listed here, try looking at the Hexagon on-line help or refer to your Hexagon for Windows User's Guide.

Problem or message Probable cause and action • This may appear when you connect the Message: Enter Serial Number logger to the PC after a battery change. Hexagon needs the correct serial number in order to calibrate logged data correctly. Type in the logger serial number (you will find this on the outside of the logger housing) and press OK.
