reassembling the packets at their destination. IP corresponds to the "Network" layer
in the ISO Network Model.
IP Address
An IP address is a 32-bit number that identifies each sender or receiver of
information sent across the Internet. An IP address has two parts: the identifier of a
particular network on the Internet and an identifier of the particular device (which
can be a server or a workstation) within that network.
IP Subnet
An IP address range that is part of a larger address range. Subnets (ie: "subsidiary
networks") are used to fragment the network address of a larger network into
smaller networks. Subnets connect to other networks through a router. Each
individual wireless LAN will typically use the same subnet for all of its clients.
ISO Network Model
The International Standards Organization has created a model for defining seven
levels – or layers – in a network. By building a standard for these layers and the
connecting interfaces, as technologies advance or systems requirements are altered it
will be simple to upgrade specific portions of the network. The seven layers are, from
the lowest layer: Physical, Data link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation,
Application.
ISP
An Internet Service Provider is an organization that provides access to the Internet.
Small ISPs provide service via modem and ISDN while the larger ones also offer
private line connections (T1, fractional T1, etc.).
